Belinda - CLS - Grayson

2005-01-25 Thread Joan Doljan
Belinda,

Please add my first cat and my first FIV+ cat, Grayson to the CLS. He died on Sunday morning on January 23rd during the blizzard. He was the most intelligent, sweetest, gentlest, happiest, lovingyoung man I had the pleasure to know. He was the alpha cat in my household and always ruled with a gentle paw. He will be sorely missed. He was losing weight and had an appointment today at the vet. I suspect he died of a heart attack. He was 10 years old. Except for dental work he had never been ill.

Thank you,

Joan

  Thank you Terrie.

Please light a special candle now.
Tonight she has gone to a better place.

She was the sweetest little spunky
kitty. She was the lightest orange tabby, which made her very beautiful
and had the softest fur I have ever touched and the largest most gorgeous
tail. We loved her so much.

Thanks to you all for your
  support.

I just found out from a dog board I belong to that these companies have
been
bought out. Wellness was bought out in 2003 and by 2004, all the original
family who started the company had been fired (4 months ago). I stopped
using Wellness about that time because I got 5 cases of canned food from
their new plant that my cats would not eat. The ones that finally ate the
food started having minor bacterial infections. I am not sure the
infections are food related but I was concerned enough to drop Wellness
and
go to Eagle Pack. I had no idea the food had changed. Now, Eagle Pack

Barb,

I had that happen with a can of Petguard, I emailed them and them.
And they said they would send me a can to replace it they sent me
3 large cans instead of one small plus some dry food samples.

Funny I had a problem with Tyson Chicken product and took them
2 weeks to respond to me. Then after they quized me they did send
a month later a coupon for a free roast.

Petguard had a lot better customer relations person than tyson!

The problem is compounded by not being able to put her in a carrier and take her to the vet, it's just too stressful for her (and at this point the sedative needed to allow her to be handled, could kill her). Even the house vet that came out wasn't able to examine her. He prescribed Methyprednisone shots (every 2 weeks), along with Metronidazole liquid that she took in her food for about 15 days before she started to refuse it. I! 've called a highly recommended East/West vet that I hope will be able to give me more ideas. I had tried putting her on a novel protein diet, but she stopped eating. When I began giving her the foods she loves again, she seemed to gain a little weight, but this morning she refused her favorites (salmon and liver). I'm afrai!

I didn't know the dangers at the time, and I was doing my best to protect her, but I think I inadvertently gave her this condition when I had her vaccinated. She had been vaccinated once, when I first trapped her, and then spent months with my FeLV kittens (before I knew their status). She was negative when I tested her, and I had them give her two more series of shots afterward. The vet (someone I won't use again), mistakenly gave her a total of 3 rabies ! shots along with all the other vaccines and it was only a month later that she started showing her symptoms. I took a healthy, vibrant kitten off the street, exposed her to FeLV and then gave her IBD with too many vaccines! I ca!

How peaceful could it be for her to have a strange person trying to give her a shot? Not to mention, trying to find a vein to put it in. I feel like I'm going to vomit. Nina

Kerry, First, in terms of the sour cream-- Simon went a few days where that was basically all her ate too, so I would not worry about that. It's very fatty, if it is whole milk sour cream, which is good. The most importantthing short-term, I think, is getting calories into him. In terms of his anemia and how bad he feels... !
is there
any way to get him a diagnosis? Sue on this list said that her cat had anemia from teh FeLV and depomedrol (steroid) shots completely resolved it. The anemia was from her cat killing her own red blood cells, and the depomedrol stoppedthat. If the anemia is from lymphoma, then steroids, or chemo if you are up to it, can also help enormously. Simon's hematocrit was down that low for a while, and still could be though I think he looks pinker now and is definitely more energetic. If it is from hemobartenella (sp?) then antibiotics could completely resolve it. If it has anything to do with his kidneys, Procrit or Epogen could help. There is also the chance, of course, that nothi!
ng can be
done and it is just degenerative from the FeLV, but it is impossible to know this based on the information you currently have from your vet. If he is feral, then I know that makes any diagnosis or treatmentchallenging, but if it is possible to get more information from your vet or another (did the vet check for hemobartanella? is lymphoma possible? is it possible he is killing his own rbc's?) If it really seems like he is plummeting, and especially if you are considering euthanasia, I would highly recommend you try a steroid shot or two first to see if they help. I would give a dexamethasone shot, which is fast-acting, along with a longer-acting and slower-to-set-in shot of Depomedrol. I thi!

I just went in to see Levi and play with the others (they'd already discovered the new toy I bought on Friday and managed to unwrap it, but just couldn't unclip it from the packaging!). Anyway, Levis is now sitting in one of the litter boxes. He's been there for at least half an hour now. I know that's not good. I'd welcome any info/comments. He's still alert, but not eating. I pray he's drinking. The vet did say his kidneys and liver were fine, but how long can that last with so little food? The last big helping he had of sour cream was this morning--probably about 2 tablespoons. What if he doesn't eat tomorrow? Can he last till Wed morning?
thanks in advance again, Kerry

Its Ace Promazine-10mg. You could check doseage as I used 1 pill (they’re small) that I put in Pill Pocket. First time I gave it to him about 1 ½ hours before we were to leave though it helped me get him in big crate that I had, it wasn’t too much help at vet. By the time I got home, however, he really was very mellow it turned out to be the first time I could clip his nails. Next time, I gave it to him about 3 hours before we were to leave. By this point, he had taken to sleeping on my bed I put this soft sided carrier I have up there next to him, and he sort of went in to sleep by himself. Once I knew he was asleep, I just quietly quickly zipped up the opening. He wasn’t happy but so mellow that he just went back to sleep, Vet visit was a whole lot easier. Big Boy will let me!
 do just
about anything to him except pick him up to hold him or trim his nails so the Ace really came in handy. Vet gave me a small supply so I have in case of emergency. After effects were just that he was staggering a little but he ate, went to the box when we got home then just slept thru the night. Its not a drug that will knock him out, just sort of makes him a little groggy mellow. Wish I had some of that when he goes to the vet!

Yes, that would be great Chris, if you could check the name/dosage. Maybe I'll do a trial run tonight with Levi and if it's impossible I'll ask vet about picking up the 'ace' meds. I have got to get him to the vetsomehow. Thanks! Kerry

It is virtually impossible for me to get BB in carrier so vet gave me some pills, “ace” something or other—I give him ½ a pill about 3 yours before put the carrier on the bed where he generally sleeps—I think that because the pill makes him a little groggy he curls up inside the carrier falls asleep. The doseage is never enough to knock him out or anything, just sort of mellows him out to get more hands on for things he doesn’t like to do (like the carrier—which of course, he knows means the vet!). Maybe you can ask your vet about it…. I can look up the name doseage if it will help…

On the basis of your very helpful and specificemail Michelle I've made an apptment on Wed morning with the best doctor I've found so far for my ferals. I'm going to take the blood report that the housecall vet faxed and your email with me.

I just hope I can get him into the carrier, and without too much stress. (I guess if he is feisty tho, then that's a good sign.)

The housecall vet did mention steroids when pressed by me, but she added they take 6-8 weeks to kick in?

Is that correct?

She took one sniff at them and turned her pretty little nose up. I tried
cutting them up in smaller pieces, even warming them, nope she's not havin'

salmon (because that's one of her favorite foods), I meant to try another
flavor, but never got around to ordering them. I could give it another go

Hello Everyone,I'm so distraught about my Gypsy. She's the feral turned house cat that I've written to you about before. She's had Inflammatory Bowel Disease since Aug of '04, and nothing I've tried has helped her. I given her Prozyme, Probiotics, Pred shots, Flagil, Benefiber, I've even started adding Colloidal Silver to her food. She has wasted away to a walking skeleton and hasn't played in months. I've called a highly recommended East/West vet that I hope will be able to give me more ideas. I had tried putting her on a novel protein diet, but she stopped eating. When I began giving her the foods she loves again, she seemed to gain a little weight, but this morning she refused her favorites (salmon and liver). I'm afraid I'm on death watch at this point and it's killing me.One of the most disheartening things about her condition, is that I think I'm responsible. The vet (someone I won't use again), mistakenly gave her a total of 3 rabies shots along with all the other vaccines and it was only a month later that she started showing her symptoms. I took a healthy, vibrant kitten off the street, exposed her to FeLV and then gave her IBD with too many vaccines! I can't tell you how miserable I feel.Thank you for letting me vent. I'm so frustrated and heartsick. I don't think I even have the option of helping her cross. How peaceful could it be for her to have a strange person trying to give her a shot? Not to mention, trying to find a vein to put it in. I feel like I'm going to vomit.Nina

Melissa,

The new kitten may NOT be felv +. It can depend on how long they were loose and who they came into contact with. I rescued two, littermates from a park last year...one was felv+ one was neg. I believe the positive one had been bitten by another cat in the parkat one point before I could catch him, he had a samll bite mark on his ear at one point.

Good luck. God Bless

I was trying to trap the mother of my foster kittens, as I saw her outside about a week ago. I thought that with this snowy and cold weather, it might be a good time to try to trap her, as she might be more likely to go for the warm food.

So, I put some food in a humane trap and set it out on my terrace, where there were some paw prints. Unfortunately, it turns out the paws that made the prints belong to an adorable little tabby and white kitten, probably the sibling to my black and white kitten we caught a few weeks ago, maybe four months old. Very similar markings, pink noses, white paws, similar size. Which means also likely FeLV positive.

No! This is the wrong cat! I don't have a plan for this cat! So now I am forced to answer my own question, would I voluntarily put myself through this again. I wish I hadn't looked at the cat, I wish I had kept the trap covered.

Oh dear. I'm too tired for this.

Fwd: [feline_lymphoma] IBD-- for Nina #2

2005-01-25 Thread Lernermichelle

---BeginMessage---

Hi Michelle--

My Phoebe had severe IBD for all of her 17 years (she passed away in 2001
from CRF). Her first severe episode of it was when she was 4 months old, and
she had periodic flare-ups from then on. I'll pass along what seemed to help
Phoebe, and such. I don't know if it can all be used with Gypsy, but perhaps
it will give some ideas.

1.)I gave Phoebe prednisone, but not all the time. I got to know when a
flare-up may be coming on. She would become hyperactive, running around the
house, often meowling a lot (not like she was in pain, but rather, as if she
wanted to go outside.). I would give her 5mg prednisone daily for 2-3 days,
then every other day for awhile (perhaps a week or two). This generally caught
the flare-up before it became severe.

2.) I prepared a homemade diet for her using chicken and rice. 1/4 cup
cooked chicken (only meat, no skin, gristle, etc.), one cup cooked rice (with
the
usual amount of salt and 1 tablespoon fat ... usually used chicken fat skimmed
off the cooled broth from cooking the chicken), 1/2 tsp. calcium powder, and
1/4 to 1/2 tsp taurine. Put it in a blender/processor with chicken broth
sufficient to process. Comes out looking similar to cooked oatmeal, but if you
freeze it, then thaw/warm a bit in the microwave before serving, it has a
better
consistency. Phoebe thrived on this. I did need to give her a multi-vitamin
supplement.

3.) Watch for dietary no-no's. For Phoebe, snakes and lizards seemed to be
her downfall. She loved to catch them, but always became sick afterwards.
Fish foods also caused her distress.

4.) When she did get a full flare-up of IBD and stopped eating, I was
relentless in assist feeding her. There was one time she actually gained
weight! I
lost count of the times I had to totally support her nutritionally for up to 2
weeks at a time. Gave her lots of nutrical, meat broth, baby food, whatever
I could stuff in her mouth. Sometimes I used a syringe, other times, I just
scraped food onto the roof of her mouth/behind her front teeth, using my finger
tip. It's desperately important to get those groceries into them. If you
don't, it only takes about 4 days for hepatic lipidosis to develop (fatty
liver). This condition is reversible, but usually involves some months of
assisted
feeding and placement of a feeding tube. You really don't want to go there.

5.) How are Gypsy's teeth? Phoebe had terrible teeth. By the time she was
8 years old, she had lost every single one of them, even with regular dentals.
Curiously, after her teeth were gone, her episodes of IBD became fewer and
less severe. Go figure.

6.) After Phoebe had gone, I happened to find out some new studies they are
doing with IBD. They are working right now with rats genetically engineered
to produce IBD, but hope to directly apply the studies to humans eventually.
At the Univ. of Louisianna, there's some folks studying n-acetyl cysteine (NAC)
for IBD. This is an over-the-counter supplement you can find at any health
food store. It's a precursor for glutathione, an amino-acid that is a potent
intestinal anti-inflammatory. These rats, when given NAC, if they do develop
IBD, then it is considerably less severe than those rats not given NAC. The
holistic vet said to give 150mg daily, preferably in 2 divided doses. As I
say,
I didn't have a chance to use it for Phoebe. But Weena had developed a bad
GI bleed. She was being treated for about 3 months with the usual meds, and
had not improved. Asked about giving NAC, and there was no reason not to give
it a try. She cleared up in less than a month.

I hope some of this might help Gypsy. Good luck.

mary all my angels

Its Ace
Promazine-10mg. You could check doseage as I used 1 pill (they’re
small) that I put in Pill Pocket. First time I gave it to him about 1
½ hours before we were to leave though it helped me get him in big
crate that I had, it wasn’t too much help at vet. By the time I
got home, however, he really was very mellow it turned out to be the
first time I could clip his nails. Next time, I gave it to him about 3
hours before we were to leave. By this point, he had taken to sleeping
on my bed I put this soft sided carrier I have up there next to him,
and he sort of went in to sleep by himself. Once I knew he was asleep,
I just quietly quickly zipped up the opening. He wasn’t happy
but so mellow that he just went back to sleep, Vet visit was a whole
lot easier. Big Boy will let me! do just about anything to him except
pick him up to hold him or trim his nails so the Ace really came in
handy. Vet gave me a small supply so I have in case of
emergency. After effects were just that he was staggering a little but
he ate, went to the box when we got home then just slept thru the
night. Its not a drug that will knock him out, just sort of makes him
a little groggy mellow. Wish I had some of that when he goes to
the vet!

It is
virtually impossible for me to get BB in carrier so vet gave me some pills,
“ace” something or other—I give him ½ a pill about 3 yours before put
the carrier on the bed where he generally sleeps—I think that because the
pill makes him a little groggy he curls up inside the carrier

Is that

Sitting in the litter box, could mean he is having problems going to the bathroom, but it also could mean it is close. The reason why they sit in it is because it is secure with the four walls surrounding them, gives them comfort. Good luck, you guys are in my thoughts.

Its Ace Promazine-10mg. You could check doseage as I used 1 pill (they’re small) that I put in Pill Pocket.

I wish I hada tape of our conversation. So much of it is over my head. It feels like wading thru glue sometimes, just to get a clear picture of what's possible/viable.

Thanks for the idea, I haven't tried liverwurst. I did try hiding
stuff in regular chicken liver, it worked for a while, then she
discovered a pill, and chewed her food much better after that! She
finally stopped taking liver from my hand. The little stinker. At
this point, she's doing little more than licking juice off of her food,
I don't think she'd gobble anything.

  Yes,
I've tried pill
pockets. I was so excited to get them, I hoped they'd be my answer.
She took one sniff at them and turned her pretty little nose up. I
tried
cutting them up in smaller pieces, even warming them, nope she's not

Hello Everyone,
I'm so distraught about my Gypsy. She's the "feral turned house
cat"
that I've written to you about before. She's had Inflammatory
Bowel
Disease since Aug of '04, and nothing I've tried has helped her.
I
given her Prozyme, Probiotics, Pred shots, Flagil, Benefiber, I've
even
started adding Colloidal Silver to her food. She has wasted away
to a
walking skeleton and hasn't played in months. The problem is
compounded
by not being able to put her in a carrier and take her to the vet,
it's
just too stressful for her (and at this point the sedative needed
to
allow her to be handled, could kill her). Even the house vet that
came
out wasn't able to examine her. He prescribed Methyprednisone
shots
(every 2 weeks), along with Metronidazole liquid that she took in
her
food for about 15 days before she started to refuse it. I've
called a
highly recommended East/West vet that I hope will be able to give
me
more ideas. I had tried putting her on a novel protein diet, but
she
stopped eating. When I began giving her the foods she loves
again, she
seemed to gain a little weight, but this morning she refused her
favorites (salmon and liver). I'm afraid I'm on death watch at
this
point and it's killing me.

One of the most disheartening things about her condition, is that
I
think I'm responsible. I didn't know the dangers at the time, and
I was
doing my best to protect her, but I think I inadvertently gave her
this
condition when I had her vaccinated. She had been vaccinated
once, when
I first trapped her, and then spent months with my FeLV kittens
(before
I knew their status). She was negative when I tested her, and I
had
them give her two more series of shots afterward. The vet
(someone I
won't use again), mistakenly gave her a total of 3 rabies shots
along
with all the other vaccines and it was only a month later that she
started showing her symptoms. I took a healthy, vibrant kitten
off the
street, exposed her to FeLV and then gave her IBD with too many
vaccines! I can't tell you how miserable I feel.

Thank you for letting me vent. I'm so frustrated and heartsick.
I
don't think I even have the option of helping her cross. How
peaceful
could it be for her to have a strange person trying to give her a
shot?
Not to mention, trying to find a vein to

Thanks Michelle,
Please thank your list-mates as well, that was so very kind of Mary to
take the time to detail her experiences. I've printed out the

I already knew that.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

1/4 cup
cooked chicken (only meat, no skin, gristle, etc.), one cup cooked rice (with the
usual amount of salt and 1 tablespoon fat ... usually used chicken fat skimmed
off the cooled broth from cooking the chicken), 1/2 tsp. calcium powder, and
1/4 to 1/2 tsp taurine. Put it in a blender/processor with chicken broth
sufficient to process. Comes out looking similar to cooked oatmeal, but if you
freeze it, then thaw/warm a bit in the microwave before serving, it has a better
consistency.

There was one time she actually gained weight! I
lost count of the times I had to totally support her nutritionally for up to 2
weeks at a time.
If you
don't, it only takes about 4 days for hepatic lipidosis to develop (fatty
liver). This condition is reversible, but usually involves some months of assisted
feeding and placement of a feeding tube.

As I say,
I didn't have a chance to use it for Phoebe. But Weena had developed a bad
GI bleed. She was being treated for about 3 months with the usual meds, and
had not improved. Asked about giving NAC, and there was no reason not to give
it a try. She cleared up in less than a month.

I hope some of this might help Gypsy. Good luck.

what's expected. I don't know if that's true, or not, it certainly
could be. I do know that it's important to check that unhappy energy

Nina,
I didn't think those two emails made it sound bad for
Gypsy. Even if it is lymphoma, lymphoma often responds incredibly well to
chemotherapy, and even just to steroids for a while, especially intestinal
lymphoma. Compared to your thinking she is dying right now, a diagnosis of
lymphoma would not necessarily be terrible-- it might meant she has treatment
options and a possibility of good quality life at least for a while. I know that
the main problem with her is that she is hard to catch and get veterinary care
for, so maybe even steroids would be a challenge. But they can be given by
injection

I've read about a lot of foods and I'm feeding his 8

both had all the same vaccines when they were kittens,
I'm concered Melange could end up with the same

Re: Gypsy IBD

2005-01-25 Thread Lernermichelle

Sorry, Nina, I had not read your comments about cancer before sending my
last email. I understand your dilemma now. One thing you should
know, though, is that steroids can be an effective way to treat lymphoma for
several months and sometimes longer (or shorter, depending where they are with
the disease) and can be given by sub-q injection at home. And without a
diagnosis if you have a sympathetic vet. And it seems from the other posts
from the other group that steroids can help with IBD also, if that is the
problem and not lymphoma.

The protocol that a vet friend uses for cats with lymphoma or other
terminal illness who are not getting chemo is the following: a shot of
1/2cc dexamethasone mixed with 1/2 cc depomedrol. Dex is strong and fast-acting
and fast to leave their systems, while depo is long-lasting but slower to
kick in. hence the combo. It is given again when the cat crashes again,
i.e. stops eating or otherwise seems a lot worse. It can last up to a
month, or as little as a few days depending on where they are with their
disease. I was able to get a vet to give me one of more of these shots to
give at home when needed, but the vet was a friend of a friend. If you
have a relationship with a shelter that has a vet, you might be able to get it
that way. If the steroids are going to help you should know within a few
days, often as soon as a few hours if it contains the dex. They increase
appetite, energy, and good mood, and reduce inflammation. I would say that
if nothing else has helped and you can not get her diagnostic procedures or
chemo if there is cancer, that you should try this regimen at least once and see
what happens. The side effects which are possible from these shots are: 1)
after several months diabetes is possible if giving depomedrol more than once a
week or two weeks; 2) it can suppress their immune systems and make them more
vulnerable to colds, and 3) after a long time it can make their skin thin (this
happened to Buddy, one of my cats who got them for lymphoma and died two years
ago). But if you are facing possible death in the near future, I really
think it is worth trying this to see if she improves and can return to a good
quality life and eating again, at least for a while.

Actually Kerry, I was thinking the same thing. He may be bluffing you,
but even if he's not, he's got to be a lot weaker than usual and he may
give in. Toss a towel over him, gently and firmly scruff him through
the towel and wrap it snuggly around him. When you have him wrapped up
like a mummy, you'll be able to handle him. Speak softly and
reassurringly to him throughout the whole process and get some
nourishment into him. Pretend he's one of your tame cats and just do
it. I'm right behind you, I'm going to have to do the same with
Gypsy. We can compare our nursing wounds.

I am just catching up, have you tried a tounge depressor to
put food in his mouth or put some on the tip of his nose and he will
lick it off. Sitting in the litter box, could mean he is having
problems going to the bathroom, but it also could mean it is close. The
reason why they sit in it is because it is secure with the four walls
surrounding them, gives them comfort. Good luck, you guys are in my

Its Ace
Promazine-10mg. You could check doseage as I used 1 pill (theyre
small) that I put in Pill Pocket. First time I gave it to him about 1
hours before we were to leave though it helped me get him in
big crate that I had, it wasnt too much help at vet. By the time I
got home, however, he really was very mellow it turned out to be
the first time I could clip his nails. Next time, I gave it to him
about 3 hours before we were to leave. By this point, he had taken to
sleeping on my bed I put this soft sided carrier I have up there
next to him, and he sort of went in to sleep by himself. Once I knew
he was asleep, I just quietly quickly zipped up the opening. He
wasnt happy but so mellow that he just went back to sleep, Vet visit
was a whole lot easier. Big Boy will let me!
! do just about anything to him except pick him up to hold him or trim
his nails so the Ace really came in handy. Vet gave me a small supply
so I have in case of emergency. After effects were just that he was
staggering a little but he ate, went to the box when we got home
then just slept thru the night. Its not a drug that will knock him
out, just sort of makes him a little groggy mellow. Wish I had
some of that when he goes to the vet!

Also something in the drug store, over the counter, that is a nutritional supplement for humans with IBS/IBD and is fairly new. I will look for the name of it. Both seemed to help her. I am not sure they are ok for cats, but it is worth checking. Slippery elm is good for diarrhea, nausea, and other problems and maybe could help? I'm sorry about your losing Semuta, and happy that Melange is doing
well. I doubt that Melange will suddenly develop IBD, especially since
you've got him (?) on a quality diet and I'm sure you watch him like a
hawk. I have tried the NB Venison, Gypsy ate it for a little while,
then decided she didn't like it. I still have an almost full bag of the
stuff. She, and my other cats, actually went through 2 1/2 bags of the
stuff before Gypsy stopped eating it. That's when I found the Solid
Gold Lamb, it's expensive, but it's really high quality too and they
like it.

I'm concerned that I may be dealing with lymphoma as well. Thanks for
the input, and sharing your story.

Re: Virbagen Omega

2005-01-25 Thread Nina

Virbac is indeed the company that makes Recombinant Feline
Interferon. The quote, (I still don't know where this quote was taken
from) is talking about "recombinant feline leukemia vaccine".
Recombinant means "produced by genetic engineering", on a DNA level.
Recombinant Feline Interferon Omega, is genetically produced from
feline DNA, rather than from human DNA (interferon A). It appears that
Virbac is now making vaccines for preventing FelV in the same way they
are generating the interferon. I don't know enough about what the
process of developing vaccines involves to tell you how they produced
the vaccines before this. There is a ton of stuff on the Internet
about the FelV vaccines; the dangers and effectiveness, but when I was
doing my research on the disease I kind of skimmed over it. My
concern, of course, was focused on treatment and cure.

"Headquartered in Nice, Virbac manufactures and markets
pharmaceuticals for animals worldwide -- the fifth largest supplier in
the world of such products for small animals. As part of its
operations, Virbac is developing Leucogen, a recombinant feline
leukemia vaccine that is already being marketed in Europe,
USA and Japan."

I am so sorry to hear of all the recent sickness and have almost hestitated

been since getting sick(ears, eyes, and paw pads) and has returned to his
naughty ways, finding lots of ways to get within view of our negative, Quincy,
which torments him, and getting into boxes, closets, clothing piles, etc.,
sharpening his claws on our indoor palm tree, running out the door when we open
it, etc. He is even playing some with strings, and jumping and running. he is
still not eating as much as before he got sick, but he has gained back at least
a few ounces of what he lost. He is due to get Adriamycin on Thursday to
try to keep the lymphoma at bay, so please send energy for him to be able to do
that (it depends on his blood work) and for it to work and keep him feeling
good. It is unbelievably great to see him feeling so good and witness this
turn-around, but I am so aware at every moment that it is temporary. Gray, who

Kerry, you should be able to get Pet Tinic and Nutrical, or equivalents, at
any vet office over the counter. I would try your own vet first, but other
clinics should sell them to you because they are not prescription items.

Makes one wonder why...was it to do away with competition, or were these

I'm bummed by the news...hadn't heard it before. Wellness has been one of
the best quality cat foods available, one of the few with no grains in their
canned food and less grain in the dry food than most others. In the PM I feed
my

top qualilty canned on hand when I can't get all the ingredients or don't have
time. In the morning, to save time and $$ I feed a 50/50 mix of Wellness
Turkey Salmon and Nature's Variety Chicken and Rice. The furkids all like it
and are doing well.

Some of my older kittys are decidedly finicky with the canned foods and I
have to be able to offer them a choice. Wellness and Nature's Variety are
canned brands with no grains. Most of them like both of those as well as
Innova,
Calif. Natural, Newman's Own and Evolve, though some flavors better than
others. Recently, a store where I get lower prices on most brands started
carrying
Merrick, another top quality brand with some interesting flavor combintions
and one of my finicky geriatric girls loves their California Roll. My two
youngest will eat anything they can stick their noses into.

Innova recently came out with a dry dog food formula with NO GRAINS, and it

Oh Nina, good luck!!! I'm glad you're going. I would spray lots of Feliway
in the carrier and on whatever towel or bed you put in it, and maybe on
something near her about 20 minutes prior to putting her in the carrier so she
is calmer. Do you put rescue remedy on their ears (the inside of the ears)? This
is also calming. And bandaids are a good idea, too, of course!

Gray would say that all of them, and us also, will "go," the question is
just when. I am very bad at taking this advice myself, but we should all
try to take one day at a time. When I say to Gray that someone is dying,
he says that they are still living, and that all living isconstantly
getting closer to death. Every day of life is a day of life. Again, I am so bad
at internalizing this myself-- I worry all day long and am so anxious and beside
myself about Simon, Fern, and all the sick cats and other animals (and humans
too). But I wish I could internalize it. I think it is right.

Re: Levi not eating, sitting in one of the litter boxes

2005-01-25 Thread Skf95111
Dear Kerry:

If Levi is still drinking and staying hydrated (Can you touch him enough to
do a pinch test on the skin on back of his neck between shoulders?) he can
miss a few meals and it is not critical, though cats can't go as long as dogs
or
humans without eating solid food; for whatever reason they are prone to fatty
liver syndrome (? -- I don't think that is the exact term)...it has been
mentioned by others on this list recently who were concerned about their
furkids
not eating.

Wild animals will usually try to go off some place by themselves and hide
when they sense it is their time to pass away. Some domesticated cats will try
to do likewise if given the opportunity. Many domesticated cats and dogs who
are closesly bonded with their humans, however, seem to welcome the comfort we
offer them and sometimes their feline or canine companions will also offer
comfot as well. I had a geriatric kitty named Caramel (the one who was cruelly
and forcibly PTS by that vet-from-hell last February, if anyone remembers...)
who was downright altruistic when it came to offering comfort to his sick
and/or dying comrades, and he deserved no less than that, himself. He would
stay
by his/her side and snuggle to keep his buddy warm and wash him/her tenderly.
It depends on the individual critter. Some will seek isolation and a cool,
dark place to hide, while others will be almost clingy and seek warmth and
comfort. As Levi is a feral, it is likely he may seek to isolate himself from
the
others if he feels his time is near. Maybe the kitty litter makes him feel
closer to the earth and outdoors? Unless you ask him, who knows?

In his book, Natural Health for Dogs and Cats, Dr. Pitcairn has chapter on
dealing with the death of a pet and there are homeopathic remedies that are
applicable for bringing some relief to a pet as it prepares to check out,
depending on what type of behavior it displays. I've never had cause to use
any of
those he recommends, however. My kittys who have chosen to pass on their own
were able to do so quite peacefully and without any outward sign of intense
discomfort. An animal communicator who is also skilled in energetic healing
was
able to help both of my FeLV+ furbabies be more relaxed and comfortable as they
crossed over.

I had to help my horse in crossing as there was no way to keep her pain
stabilized or keep her on her feet and horses are a bit like whales beached out
of
water, if they stay down too long the weight of their own bodies makes it
difficult to breathe and causes the motility in their gut to diminish...nature
intended them to be on their feet and ready to flee from predators at a
moment's notice; they are a grazing animal and keeping moving helps keep their
gut
working properly. We do them a disservice when we confine them to stalls or
corralls and feed them large amounts of food twice daily.

I don't envy you having to comtemplate such possibilities. And I am hoping
it will be a long while before I have to do so again.

Here's hoping you can get Levi to the vet on Wednesday and there will be a
way to help him get well.

Re: Wellness and Eagle Pack

2005-01-25 Thread Faye Lewis
This is how it was explained to me. Wellness asked some investors to come
in on the scene in 2003. These investors forced all of the original family
members out last summer (2004). I do not know who these investors are.

Now, Eagle has investors coming in the exact same way. It will be
interesting to see what happens next.

I don't know who they are. I do believe Wellness changed something last
summer. I had 5 cases of canned food, all different flavors and from 2
different stores. The only common denominator was they all came from the
new plant in Boston. All 9 of my cats refused to eat it. I have never had
one cat even refuse a brand new food much less all of them refusing a food
they normally eat and love. That is when I changed to Eagle Pack.

Thank you everyone for your support with my Gypsy girl. After
exchanging emails with all of you, I've decided to take her to the new
vet I've heard about. She, (the vet) practices Western and Eastern
medicine and I've been told is very intuitive and wonderful with the
animals. At this point, we have nothing to lose and Gypsy's life to
gain. Wish me luck, I'll bring lots of bandaids with me!

Thanks Belinda. I'll ask about pancreatitis, but Gypsy has been having
IBD syptoms since 3/04. At the time it seemed to come out of nowhere,
which is why I started to suspect the vaccinations.

My Semuta had IBD for a couple years (undiagnosed for
most of that time) and then died suddenly of stomach
lymphoma that had spread to other organs.
I've read about a lot of foods and I'm feeding his 8
year old littermate Natural Balance Venison Green
Pea now. It's the only food I can find that doesn't
have corn (which is not easily digested). Since they
both had all the same vaccines when they were kittens,
I'm concered Melange could end up with the same
problems. So far so good though.

she brought him into the clinic we FELV/FIV tested him and he came back FELV +. She has put up signs and ads in the paper etc and no response. We can have him neutered if we can find a place to go. I'm not very good at breeds of cats..I'm used to the mutts (domestic short hair etc.) but I think this is a siamese of some kind or a Ragdoll. He's a long haired and has beige fur and a black/dark brown tail, ears, paws, and face w/ blue eyes. When you pick him up he melts like a Ragdoll. I can get pics if it would help. He is miserable in the cage though. He hollers all day to get out :( When you get him out he just head butts you and makes biscuits and becomes a purring lovebug. If you set him on the ground he rubs up against your legs and screams until you pick him up again lol He's SO sweet.I will contact those different people you mentioned and hopefully something will come of it. I don't think cats are supposed to get chocolate? Is that just dogs? I used to have a crf cat that loved choc. milkshakes, but I'd just give him a taste. Yes, I have tried the novel protein diet, she hated rabbit, ate venison
for a while (especially the canned), and finally settled on Solid Gold
Lamb. She lost so much weight that I had to stop trying to force her
to eat what she didn't want. I haven't tried the new prescription
foods that have the proteins broken down for easy digestion. Our
wonderful list members have given me some more ideas, and I'm going to
a new vet tomorrow, so say a prayer we find something to help her.
Thank you,

haven't tried liverwurst. I did try hiding stuff in regular chicken
liver, it worked for a while, then she discovered a pill, and chewed her food
much better after that! She finally stopped taking liver from my

Yes, I've tried pill pockets. I was so excited to get them, I
hoped they'd be my answer. She took one sniff at them and turned her
pretty little nose up. I tried cutting them up in smaller pieces, even
warming them, nope she's not havin' it. I don't know how a little feral
got to be so picky! I got the salmon (because that's one of her favorite
foods), I meant to try another flavor, but never got around to ordering
them. I could give it another go with a different flavor, at this point
though, when I can't get her to eat the real thing, I'm not very hopeful.

Hi Bonnie,
Pilling my Gypsy is pretty much out of the question, that's why I was trying
the injections. Did your Nina get over her IBD?

Nina, My muted tortie Nina has IBD. She has been taking half a dexamethasone tablet every other day for it, and for asthma, for a couple of years.
