OT: Trader Joe's cat food!

2005-02-08 Thread Jen Meyer
Title: Message

Hey
Guys!

I just wanted to
metion a great canned cat food that I stumbled upon while I was in D.C. for a
few weeks! Thereis a chain of grocery stores (kinda like a "Whole
Foods" or "Central Market") called Trader Joe's...unfortunately, the stores can
only be found in about 15-20 states (none here in Texas... :( ), but
if you're lucky enough to have one nearby, they've got a great canned cat food
(tuna seems to be the best) whose ingredients are on par with those found in
Innova, California Natural, etc. BUT Trader Joe's food costs about half as
much! I picked up just 3 cans of the tuna (shoulda gotten more!) at only
$0.45 a can!

Oh! And Trader
Joe's *human* food is pretty excellent as well...AND inexpensive!
:)

Jen

I was wondering if anyone feeds their cat Wellness? I'm currently feeding Adeline Science Diet and was looking into switching her over to Wellness. If anyone else has any info I'd love to hear about it.

I do. I feed them Wellness wet and dry food. I feed the adult super 5 dry
food in the blue bag, and mix it with Wyson Uretic, a dry food to prevent
urinary crystals because my two little boys have gotten those in the past.
The wet food I alternate with other healthy brands like Innova and Newmans Own
and Pro Plan, because they get bored otherwise. I like the ingredients,
and they seem to like the taste (as long as they get other things too!). I
also give Wellness tabs, which I think are from the same company, to my cats who
will eat them and to my dog. They are multi-vitamins.

My cats love Wellness dry cat food - both the chicken
the salmon flavors. While they sometimes turn their
noses up at the fishy flavored canned food, they do
enjoy the chicken, turkey, and chicken lobster
flavors. Most importantly, they seem healthier when
eating Wellness.

My holistic vet recommends Wellness because it is
naturally preserved, has high quality ingredients and
does not contain a lot of the junk you find in other
commercial foods, like BHT and by-products.

My cats also quite enjoy the Wellness canned, although they are fussy about
the flavours they like. They really only like chicken, turkey and
turkey/salmon. I feed them other high quality natural foods because they
get bored. I have noticed that fur is fantastic since they've been eating
Wellness.

My own
catsall love the Wellness dry food I give them--Salmon, Turkey and Herring
Oil in this case. In fact I can't get them to eat wet food at all now, which is
a shame. My fosters get it as a treat after they eat their wet food--and by the
time I get to their room they are literally leaping up and down with excitement
(they can hear me pouring it on to their special tray in the kitchen). It's
meant to be one of the best brands available---human grade ingredients I
believe. Kerry

And for cats that like their food soupy, just add water, stir and allow to soak (so the gravy gets the full flavor). Julie,

LOL -- I know what you mean. The nastier the food is the more they seem to
want it. I also recently saw that Purina has a new Indoor Cat formula --
I looked at it, and there's still a lot of junk in it. I like the
idea/concept of a special food for indoor cats, but the ingredients could
be
much better.

This is their brand-new one (as opposed to the 'natural recipe' that came
out last year) right?
I looked at the ingredients and, like Sue, wasn't impressed; I was sort of
hopeful when I heard about it, but then I read the ingredients and was
like,
how is it any different from your regular stuff?

I'm shuffling back and forth between Eagle Pack Holistic, Wellness, Dick
Van
Patten's Natural Balance (they finally started to carry it out here in
Hooterville!), Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul.

I tried Evolve, and they like the canned food, but despise the dry food.

On the other hand, some folks maintain that dry food is so bad for cats
period, that the difference between an Innova and a Friskies isn't that
great in the grand scheme of things.
I do know that I spilled some 'Alley Cat' that I feed the possums and
raccoons, and the kitties scarfed it up like little hogs, but even the dry-

Well, I feed Wellness dry to Calawalla (FELV+, but very healthy).
She doesn't eat much. I figure I pay $.50/day to feed Calawalla her
Wellness dry, but I could be wrong. I pay more for Nicky and even
more for MBK feeding other food - they're older and have special
problems. Haven't figured out the dogs. That of course doesn't
include litter and vet bills which this month included $30 to ask the
vet is Nicky constipated? (no). AHGG.

And I'm hoping that Calawalla gets future benefit of Wellness (she's
only a year and a half old). She eats less than the others, stays
fat. Every now and then I use something else with her. Actually
haven't found a food she's crazy about, cause she'd rather play
than eat!

I, of course, eat gruel once a day and wear 20 year old clothes :)

Everyone,

I understand that Wellness is the premium choice in
all natural, human grade, good quality cat food, but
who in the heck can afford it?!

I did some window shopping yesterday and was blown
away at the outrageous prices!

2 lb 15 oz bag-- $9.99 Adult formula
5 lb 14 oz bag--$16.99 Adult formula
12 lb bag-- $26.99 Adult formula

2 lb 15 oz bag--$10.49 Kitten formula

2 lb 15 oz bag-- $9.99 Lite formula
5 lb 14 oz bag--$16.99 Lite formula

2 lb bag-- $10.99 Salmon, Turkey, Herring Oil formula
5 lb bag-- $17.99 Salmon, Turkey, Herring Oil formula
12 lb bag--$27.99 Salmon, Turkey, Herring Oil formula

If you notice, Wellness is selling their products one
or two ONCES short of an additional POUND! What kind
of marketing strategy is that?! Consumers are paying
anywhere from 3-5 dollars a pound!

Also, Wellness's largest bag is 12 pounds; however,
they are pricing the bag at a 20-22 pound price!

Do NOT get me wrong, I stay away from commerical cat
food products, but heck I pay $24.99 for a 22 pound
bag of Veterinary Recommended Hill's Science Diet:
Light and $30.00 for a 8.5 pound bag of the new
Veterinary Recommended Hill's Science Diet: Nature's
Best! To me, that expensive enough!

I am sorry, with ten cats (one being FeLV+) I just
cannot afford the Wellness's extravagant price tag.

Who REALLY feeds their cats the Wellness product line
and is it TRULY worth their coached prices?

Hi Lynn!

Thanks for providing us this tip!

Felidae looks to be pretty legitimate and solid;
however, it does not contain L-Lysine or any vitamin
C. Should this be a concern to pet guardians? Does
it matter whether or not a natural cat food has
these two ingredients? I was under the impression
that ALL natural cat foods provided L-Lysine and
vitamin C in their products.

Lora

Another good cat food that I have found is Felidae.
My most finicky eater, Stinker, loves it as well as
the others. There is a site that tells about it if
your interested in it. I found it at my feed store.
They also have it in the can food.

The canned Nutro is like 75 cents a can, but it is
 often on sale at Petsmart
for 59 cents. I stock up then! But that is still
 expensive food. I buy the
huge 20 lb bag of dry food for my 3 cats and store
it in old Deli Cat plastic
containers. The 20lb bag is around $17 and lasts
 about 2 months for me.

Wow! I paid $31 for the last 20lb bag of Max Cat and
the Natural Choice was more. Then again I have the
choice of three different places to buy it at around
here and this is the cheapest.

Canned food is never on sale around here with the
cheapest being 79 cents at one place and another is 99
cents a can. The third doesn't carry it.:(

Again, this is Nutro Natural Choice. They also have
 Nutro Max but I don't
think it's as good. I like the no preservatives
part which is why I use the
 Natural Choice.

Miss Mouse doesn't care for the canned food, but all
 3 love the dry and
Barney is in ecstasy over the canned! He purrs and
 drools and chirps then
flops on the ground flat on his back and wiggles
 around :) It's hilarious!!
