[Finale] Finale's GUI ongoing anomaly
Finale has had an annoying GUI quirk as far back as I can remember. At least since 2001, maybe before that. And it still exists in 2011. Why is it that whenever you open an existing file, switch to Page View, print, and then close the file, Finale asks if you want to save it??? Huh??? Even if I've made a modification, save it, then print, it asks if I want to save it up closing!?!?! Is it just that the programmers or designers at Coda, MakeMusic, whatever they're called this week, they just don't get it? Maybe this has been discussed before, but… J D Thomas ThomaStudios ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
Re: [Finale] Finale's GUI ongoing anomaly
OK. A built-in kludge that the programmers inserted. Didn't know that. Thanks. (I've had a QuicKey for years that got around the asinine dialog). But, it doesn't address my original question: WHY??? I know of no other Mac application that reacts this way. J D Thomas ThomaStudios On Dec 23, 2010, at 10:21 AM, Mark McCarron wrote: Command D for don't save. Sent from Yahoo! It is because, secretly, deep down inside, you really wanted to save that file again and MakeMusic knows it J D Thomas mailto:j...@thomastudios.com December 23, 2010 10:26 AM OK. I suspect it's because printing causes an UPDATE LAYOUT, and that means the loaded file is no longer in the same state as what was loaded from the hard disk. I think programs like MS Word do this, too, and they SILENTLY save the changes to the file, without asking you and without changing the date on the file. Which would you prefer -- a file that has been changed without telling you (and which could perhaps be corrupted by that change) or a file that has been changed and you are told about it and given the chance to not save the change? -- David W. I don't know why, but QuarkXpress does the same thing. Apparently those programs are considering printing a change. Re: [Finale] Finale's GUI ongoing anomaly
I don't think that is true. If you simply OPEN the file, and immediately close it wants to save it. So..why does it do that? Go and try it. Open Finale, find a file, open it and then use the Command-W to close the file. It wants to save it even if it has been open like 1 second with no autosaving or anything David W. [Finale] BLANK page results
Perhaps someone has come upon this problem. I will here describe the problem, and, for a change, one solution. A colleague called me today to say he was having a problem printing a piece. This is on a Mac with Fin2004. It is a two-page vocal and piano part. When he went to print it, all he got from the printer was two blank pages. He tried previewing it before he printed, also making a PDF. All he could see was two blank pages, although his regular file included everything he had imputed. Anybody know why this happened? The solution was: he made another document from scratch and copied and pasted from the old doc to the new one. It printed properly. Any reason for any of this? All the best, KIM R ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

I don't know that this is what happened, but I know from direct personal experience one thing that causes this. In my case, I had created a document, and when I had gotten everything to my satisfaction, it seemed to be a two page score. However, earlier in the process, it was a four page score, and when I wasn't careful enough to check the page sttings in the print dialog, I was trying to print pages 3 and 4 (which were part of the score, as far as Finale knew) when 3 and 4 were, in fact, blank. When I chose to print all pages, then I got the two pages of music, followed by the two blank pages. ns ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] {Spam} Good slur settings? F2010
Does anyone have any good general slur settings they would like to share? I am getting rather sick of the enormous height of slurs that Finale creates over long phrases with large ranges, and am at a loss to find much better despite attempts at changing the settings. Thanks for any help, Matthew ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
