[Finale] One measure of uneven playback

2014-08-12 Thread Richard Huggins
I've got one measure of uneven playback and so far nothing has dislodged it. I
have used Clear (only tempo changes checked on filter), have used Cut then
re-engraved, have used Delete and then re-engraved, and I'm sure some other
actions. I had originally tapped tempo for entire song and everything else
works fine, just can't figure out what's making this measure drag and why i
can't replace it without it doing the same thing as the measure it replaced.

A bandaid fix is sorta working. I created an invisible tempo change staff
expression that approximates the tempo of the measures that precede and follow
the errant one, then used another hidden staff expression to cancel that out in
the next measure with a zero-value tempo change. It'll do, but I'd like some
things to think about if this happens again.Theories or fixes welcome.

Some things to think about:

1) is there an expression or articulation used only in that measure and
nowhere else that may have been defined for playback and have a tempo
alteration? I know that I've messed things up in some of my files in
the past by copying/editing an expression rather than creating one from
scratch only to find that the one I copied and edited had a playback
definition that I hadn't thought to check on.

2) is there some hidden midi data in that measure which changes the tempo?

3) how did the file originate -- start in your current version of Finale
(whichever that is) or did you import from a previous version or did you
import a midi file or MusicXML file?

Please keep us posted if you ever figure it out.

[Finale] Position and relative dynamics ignored

2014-08-12 Thread Michael Lawlor
[Finale 2009]

Using VST instruments for Finale, I have a poly-choral work I would like
to have sound as if the ensembles are spaced left and right. I can go
into VST instruments and set up the spacing how I want but when I try
playback, the settings have been ignored and when I go back into VST
instruments, they are at their default settings. This also happens with
the volume control, which needs adjusting so the cor anglais is not
louder than the oboe.
Is there a parameter somewhere else that I need to set?

In 2009, I believe pan and volume are also set in the Instrument List.

[Finale] Jari-Plugin malfunctioning suddenly

2014-08-12 Thread J D Thomas
Hi Jari,

I'm working on a rather large Finale file in FinMac2012. I've been using the
JW Space Systems v1.12 plugin extensively and suddenly the other day it started
doing something unexpected: instead of positioning a single orchestra system
in the center of the page, as I have it set up to do, it's executing a fit
music command. IOW, it constantly takes the systems on one page and moves them
to the previous page. This started happening about 3-4 days ago, and it's
still doing exactly that. Just this morning I tried it again, and same thing,
with the same exact measures. And now those measure are about 20 pages back.
Weird. I've restarted my Mac and Finale, but it steadfastly keeps screwing up.
Unfortunately it's now a completely deprecated plugin for me.

I have not tried it in Finale 2014. Too busy to mess with that.

This has happened to me as far back as FinWin2011, so I don't use it. There
are other plugins malfunctioning since FinWin2014 (asked here and via Jari's
list) but I've never received an answer. I've started working on another large
client file, so will make a list of the non-working plugins.

[Finale] One part of 21 = staggered barlines

2014-08-12 Thread Dennis Bathory-Kitsz
Hi all,

Almost done with the layout of a major piece for a client. It's all tricky,
but one part is giving me a struggle.

I need staggered barlines, and Finale 2014 still doesn't support staggered
barlines (I can't find reference to it).

Here's the deal:

In mm234-316, staves 2-21 are in the same time signature and with simultaneous
barlines. All good. But JUST staff 1 differs. It has a different number of
measures from the other 20 and the measure contents vary (i.e., a different
time sig if it were shown, which it isn't) and with its barlines staggered,
sometimes 3/32 of a beat forward from the rest of the stack, sometimes 1/64
behind it. The part 'accordions' in and out for that whole section, and then
ends up at the same point at m317.

I can squeeze stuff back forth tupletize and otherwise kluge to make it
come out. That's fine. But the staggered barlines are the problem.

Unless I missed this change, I can't hide barlines in only one part. To fake
it, I would just hide all the barlines and use a graphical barline on the
other 20 parts -- but this wouldn't show in the linked parts and FOR SURE this
score is going to be revised a couple of times before performance.

Any clever suggestions on how to have staggered barlines on just the ONE part?

Thanks,
Dennis

2014-08-12 Thread John Blane
You can hide the barlines on that one staff with a staff style set to hide
barlines - then make yourself a barline as an expression and metatool it
where you need it.

Re: [Finale] Emergency help

2014-08-12 Thread Justin Phillips
If you go to the MIDI/Audio Menu Device Setup MIDI Setup, is your
Roland/MIDI interface showing as an available device?

If not, try this first:

1) Close Finale

2) Shut down your PC and turn off your Roland

3) Verify your USB/MIDI cables are still connected properly

4) Turn the Roland back on then turn the computer back on. Launch Finale and
see if Finale recognizes it.

If not, try the following. This will reset your preferences for Finale but will
not impact any of your files.

1) Close Finale then open a Windows Explorer window. Turn on Hidden Files and
Folders by going to the Tools menu Folder and Search Options View Tab and
check Show Hidden Files and Folders.

2) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(Your User Name)\Application
Data\MakeMusic\Finale 2012

3) Locate the files named Finale.ini and Finmidi.ini. Drag these to the Trash.

4) Reboot your PC and re-launch Finale. You should be prompted on open to
re-select your MIDI preferences. Select the appropriate setup then see if
Finale recognizes the device again.

From the FAQ:

*1.7 What causes an error message like
FinPIStaffSystem::FinPIStaffSystem-Unable to load Enigma Data. EXTAG
is'O%SS'*

This most likely is due to a bug in Finale's Auto Update Layout feature.
You can usually work around the problem by turning off Auto Update Layout.
Auto Update Layout causes a substantial performance hit, so learning to
work without it is not necessarily bad.

This will reset your preferences for Finale but
will not impact any of your files.

Drag these to the
Trash.

  4) Reboot your PC and re-launch Finale. You should be prompted on open to
re-select your MIDI preferences. Select the appropriate setup then see if
Finale recognizes the device again.

Suddenly, Finale '12 will not recognize my MIDI device, a Roland SK50 that
I have used for many years with
various versions of Finale. I get the message that I have installed an
input device that is out of the range of my
music although I have done nothing different other than turning Finale off
and on. The computer hasn't even
been turned off since I used Finale last. (yesterday) I did notice that
Finale had lost my specialized templates.
Can anyone suggest a fix. I need to transcribe some music ASAP.
