Re: [Finale] chord suffix
You have to edit the suffixes independently, one at a time. Or load a different suffix library from among the ones supplied and use them instead. Once you have entered a certain set of suffixes in the score, the process for exchanging them is rather complex. You delete the unwanted suffixes one at a time, and when you get the message that one is in use, you choose one that you have loaded from a library to replace it. Urg. This process is labour intensive and ungainly, and you should complain to MakeMusic about how difficult it is to perform the simplest edits on chord suffixes, like resizing. [Finale] Can't change font size for part of a text block
Hello Listers, I'm having a frustrating time finding (feels like excavating!) the useful information that allows me to use Finale 2014 in similar ways to what I've done in the past with 2000c. I'm relieved to find some positive improvements along the way, but... ...I've just wasted an unacceptable amount of time trying, with some input - not help - from the on line User Manual, to change the font size for just one character in a Text block, which has never previously caused me any problem. In my Copyright notice I like to have the C-in-a-circle sign about the same height as the capital letters in the remainder of the notice. I can highlight just the one character, and that's what shows up in the edit menu, but when I change the size and exit the box the change has been applied to the whole text block. :( The same thing happens if I just try to change the year to bold. My current time-saving work-around is to create a separate text block for the Copyright symbol. Ridiculous!! I've given up on the idea of a bold date (that was just an experiment to see if it was possible). [Finale] questions
Greetings, As a long time user of Finale, I am embarrassed to admit that I don’t know what Font Annotations are. Please explain! How do I get Finale to show me the entire library of articulations? I want to insert a breath mark into my score, but can’t find it….help, please. Re: [Finale] questions
Font Annotations are a list of measurements that show where the top, bottom, left, and right limits of a character are. They help with kerning (space between text characters) and in Finale they also help with figuring out how far something is supposed to be from another thing, say slur ends for example. Normally, you don't have to worry about them, but if you are using a font that Finale doesn't know about, you might have to create a Font Annotation for it. It is automatic in recent versions of Finale, but I am away from my Finale computer right now, so I don't know exactly where the command to create the Font Annotations is. When you click a note with the Articulation Tool, a window opens up. This window contains all the articulations that are presently loaded. You can make the window bigger (I certainly have!) to show more of them at a glance. If for some reason you don't have the factory set of articulations loaded, you can load a library. There are several different ones included. The breath mark is metatool B in my Finale default file. I'm pretty sure it came from the factory like that. Hold the B key and click the note. You can create more articulations using any character at all in any font. The hard part is figuring out the default placement, which always requires a bit of trying this and that. Klaus That sounded like a good idea. Does it work for you with Word? I don't use Word, being generally anti-Microsoft but unwilling to switch allegiance to Mac for Finale. I've just tried doing what you suggest in (Corel) Word Perfect. No problem in WP, where I quickly made samples of my Copyright notice in Arial 14/10 point, 13/9 point and 12/8 point. I tried copying and pasting the smallest. No problem with the process, but Finale immediately changed it all to 12-point. :( I might not find this quite so infuriating if I hadn't been able to do it in Finale fifteen years ago the way I want now. I feel as if I've just spent a lot of money on something that's not yet fully fit for purpose. Might my problems (there are others) be incompatibility between Windows 8.1 and Finale 2014? Re: [Finale] TApping tempo
Hi Richard, I'll let someone else field the Tap-tempo question, but a good way to get around several often-used tools is to program the eight keys in the middle of your computer keyboard (F through '). Program on a Mac by holding control/option and pressing the key you want to program; switch tools by holding control and pressing the programmed key. I use these shortcuts in conjunction with Selection Tool features and maneuver around tools quite handily. Hope this helps. Re: [Finale] Can't change font size for part of a text block
Word is what I use, but other text applications should do the same. As for Finale switching the text size: Did you paste to a text block where a text of a given size had been deleted incompletely? Try pasting to a new text block. If spaces or other invisible elements are left, the formatting stays in the block. Re: [Finale] Finale 2012 (Mac) and expression tool
If you're using expressions that are assigned to categories, the Tempo Marks, Tempo Alterations, and Rehearsal marks categories are assigned to staff lists in the Category Designer, which you can get to from the Document menu or by hitting Edit Categories in the Expression Selection dialog. The general assumption is that expressions which belong to these categories will always be assigned to the same staves. For example, in a standard orchestral score, tempo marks probably go above the top staff and the violin 1 staff in the score, and the top staff in all parts. In the Category Designer, you can duplicate one of these categories if you have a category of tempo marks that needs to use a different staff list. If you've got an expression in one of the other categories, then in the Expression Selection dialog there should be an arrow next to the Assign button, and then you can choose Assign to Staves ... In general, expressions assigned to multiple staves are automatically able to be positioned independently. For Tempo Marks, Tempo Alterations, and Rehearsal Marks (or categories duplicated from them), moving the master expression, the one assigned to the highest staff, will move the expression on all assigned staves; moving any of the other expressions will move just that one, and you can move the master expression by itself by holding down the ` key while you drag.
