In fairness, Davidd, the problems with the print dialog do not affect the
printed output quality. Thankfully, the printed output is as good as ever.

Thank you for responding on-list, Mark.

What sort of timetable can the early adopters of Finale25 expect for the
repair of the printing issues?

Nobody should spend $149 on an upgrade only to learn that they have to
revert to an earlier version of the product simply to get acceptable
printed output. Imagine some kid heading off to college, buying the
academic version, running into this problem. How would a first-time
user overcome the problem, not having an earlier version to print from?
Worse yet, imagine someone who is tempted by the cross-grade offer and
makes the purchase to begin to explore Finale. How will that person
cope with the printing issues?

What if a person is making a large jump from a much older version, for
example, Finale2010, to Finale25? How would they handle the printing
problem, since the file formats are incompatible? Yes, they could save
the file in an earlier version's format, but how much of the new,
improved Finale25 file will be lost in such a conversion? And how far
back does the new version's "save in [earlier version format]"
capability go?

After a two year wait people should be saying "Wow, this is fantastic!
Everybody should upgrade!" Instead people are saying "Hold on, wait,
there are serious flaws in this new version." And I haven't read any
messages which have said "This new version has XYZ which is so much
better than earlier versions."

Even the completely 64-bit aspect hasn't particularly thrilled anybody,
at least not in this group.

And finally, can you explain why long-time Finale users (I've been with
the program since version 3.5, only skipping a single upgrade until now)
have to pay the same as people who have never supported Finale in the
past but instead have supported competing software? Where is the
corporate loyalty to the faithful customers? I realize the company
needs to expand their customer base, so making an appealing cross-grade
offer is important. But you also need to keep your long-time customer
base happy and not giving us a deeper discount ($99?) instead of making
us pay the same as users of Sibelius or Notion or Forte or whatever
certainly isn't making any of us happy.

Thanks for reading -- I realize you may not be able to answer my
questions, but perhaps you could pass them along to whomever in the
corporation sets the pricing and the scheduling of interim updates.

2016-08-22 Thread Mark Adler
Hi Chuck,

Thanks for reaching out with your requests. I and others at MakeMusic
subscribe to this list and have been following the thread. I subscribe in
digest form and read every update.

I'm sorry you are disappointed with the new Finale. We are aware of the
printing issues are are working to fix them.

We are also aware of the the desire for more customizable pallets, both in
size and color and, while not on the roadmap for the immediate future
(v25.1 or v25.2), we are certainly discussing ways that this can be
achieved.

Part of my job is to prioritize bug fixes and features given available
resources. While I'd love to fix every bug and issue submitted, for this
release, other issues took precedence over developing smarter tuplet
bracket hooks.

Best,

Mark Adler

Re: [Finale] Apparent printing bug in new Finale

2016-08-22 Thread Chuck Israels
Hah! Jef, no you haven’t, but I do appreciate that there may be some deserved
sarcasm in your message.

I have been a Finale user since v 1.0 (it cost something like $1000 when it was
first released, if I remember correctly, and that probably translates into
quite a bit more in today’s dollars). I have gotten to know a few of the Coda
Music people, then MM people over the years - sometimes at conventions where
they were demonstrating Finale, sometimes through correspondence, and always
found them to be friendly and committed to making something that is such a help
to me in my work that I have been forgiving of what are sometimes obvious
shortcomings. And I have been optimistic in assuming that the goals of the
company have not been so different from mine that my input would fail to be
heard and taken into account.

I have accepted the financially driven orientation towards what I consider to
be lowest common denominator educational use, even understanding that this
might be pulling attention and resources away from elements that are essential
to me. (Like most on this list, I have no use for many of the superficial
school-y stuff.)

Another thing that keeps me faithful, and perhaps blindly optimistic, is that I
just do not want to learn a new piece of complex software. I have acquired a
little sense of how Finale works “under the hood” - enough so that I can
usually beat it into submission when I have something to do that Finale is
reluctant to do in a straightforward fashion. Sibelius doesn’t seem to be
better to me - (I could be wrong - don’t really know), and I don’t want to
spend weeks learning new working methods in order to find out. Spreadbury’s
promised new software will not include chord symbols, and it will present the
sam obstacle of learning new methods of controlling it. At this point, not an
attractive alternative to me.

Now - after considerable fanfare and what seems to me to have been a long wait,
I am underwhelmed by some things in this release. And the printing screw up
seems inexcusable. Of course, there are workarounds, the easiest of which may
be to print from 2014.5. But to release a long awaited new version with a
blatant flaw in an essential element of the workflow is certainly, at the very
least, sloppy. Where were the beta testers?

Of course, there are some obvious improvements in the new version. For those
of us, like me, who do not hear written music flawlessly in our imagination,
improved playback is helpful. And I imagine that speed improvements may prove
to be good. However - some other things for which there has been a substantial
volume of support have been ignored for several years. MM admits that there
have been many requests for the restoration of the old, colorful, configurable
tool pallets - perhaps overly large for laptop users and relegated to the
category of eye candy to others, but a useful visual aid for anyone with less
than 20/20 vision.

Like many others, I have requests that seem reasonable to me that continue to
go unanswered. Mark Adler (always courteous and responsive) told me that,
though he understood and agreed with me about how Finale is misdirected in how
it handles the default spacing of tuplets with brackets, and that he also
understood how it could be fixed, that there was not time to include it in this
long waited and expensive release. That is a disappointment. (If your bracket
hooks are larger than 12 evpus - a half space, then outside of staff vertical
placement is inconsistent. I prefer .75 space hooks, but I must now choose
between hooks that look small to me or constant fussing with the vertical
placement of some tuplets where Finale places the bracket correctly but
misaligns the number relative to the bracket, if the hooks are more than a half
space long.)

So, perhaps not so optimistic at the moment. I will send this to Mark too, and
while not naive, I do hope it has some salutary effect.

2016-08-22 Thread Robert Patterson
I hope you will forward the extracted parts scenario to MM. You basically
have to type every name twice: once in the print db and then again in
Finder to remove the "- Score".

FWIW: I never use voiced parts. (The lack of Special Tools support in the
parts is a deal-breaker.) What I do is link in the score every part that is
not voiced. (That is, every part that appears on the same staves in score &
part.) For the parts that are doubled-up in the score, I create a separate
copy where I break them all onto separate staves. (TGTools is great for
this.) I end up with two documents: Score.musx and
Score-DecombinedParts.mux.

Re: [Finale] Apparent printing bug in new Finale

2016-08-22 Thread Jonathan Smith
There is a little trick it took me a long time to discover, that in a mac print
dialogue (save as pdf) where there is a prompt for the file name you can click
on any file name in the active window, even if it is greyed out, and it
auto-inserts the name of the file you've clicked on - sometimes can save a
little time and is more accurate that re-typing.

Yes, it adds “ - Score” to the name. I was reprinting parts from a pre-2007
project, which didn’t have linked parts.

Also, I suppose you know this, that any parts with grace notes in them need to
be extracted when they are two to a staff, because the grace notes don’t space
correctly in voiced linked parts. That means almost all my woodwind parts in
almost every orchestra and concert band piece, and some of the trumpet and horn
parts. Urg again.

Re: [Finale] Apparent printing bug in new Finale

2016-08-22 Thread Robert Patterson
When you create the PDF for the extracted part, does it append text like "-
Score" to the name you typed?

You are correct that foor extracted parts you are SOL. May also I ask why
you use them instead of linked parts?

If it's any consolation, if you pdf more than one part/score at a time you
only have to type over "Untitled" once.

Personally, I'm using 14.5 for printing until/if this mess is resolved.

It's probably already gotten a quick response (not a repair) -- the
marketing department is all giving each other high-fives that so many
people have already bought the upgrade even though it sucks!

How many years have they had to get this upgrade right and to test it
thoroughly to be sure there aren't such huge and obvious bugs? I sure
hope this isn't indicative of how Finale is going to be at the hands of
this non-musical corporation that now owns it!

I can't believe that a product would be released with such a huge and
insurmountable bug so easy to find and in a place that people would
likely run into it immediately -- it's as if they forgot to test the
Print routine at all!

The new Mac print dialog is rife with problems. You are not crazy. I
recommend saving to pdf. But you'll almost certainly have to click through
page size warnings even for parts (or score) that you are haven't selected
for pdf'ing.

I hope you will report this problem to MM.

[Finale] Apparent printing bug in new Finale

2016-08-21 Thread Chuck Israels
I open a score with 10 parts, choose "None” in the print dialog, then select
the individual part I want to print (after making sure the correct selections
are made in both the page setup and print dialog boxes), then the print dialog
automatically and incorrectly selects the score as well as the part and shows
the error dialog window that says I have wrong parer sizes (the score paper is
different from the part paper). No system of selecting/deselecting cures this,
the score always gets a check mark as soon as I hit “print.” I have not tried
ignoring the warning and printing anyway - don’t want to waste a bunch of paper
on a incorrectly printed score I don’t need anyway. Can anyone confirm this
behavior?

Thanks,

Chuck
