I have been using Fin2k4 and Windows2000 to export EPS files into
Pagemaker6.5 quite successfully. Make sure to uncheck Include Fonts.

Which PostScript driver do you use for the EPS export?

I seem to be successful with AdobePS Acrobat Distiller and Minolta QMS
PagePro 1250E PS, both of which I believe use the stock Microsoft PS print
driver underneath. Let me know if you want more details (file version
numbers, etc).

William,
thanks, works fine. I don't have Sibelius, myself, I just tried it out at a
friend's computer that has it. I didn't look in the manual but just fiddled
around a bit. But I see there is, like in Finale, more depth to find in the
program. However, befor I buy it I will have to evaluate some more.
I have been using Finale a lng time and I can do everything I want
except - EPS export...

You don't need to do this to export graphics, because you can just select
the systems you want, but it's easy to create e.g. system breaks (select a
barline and hit Enter on the keyboard) or page breaks (select a barline
and hit Ctrl+Enter) as desired. You can also drag either end of the
system to indent it, if necessary.

I found no function to alter the size of a staff, or some bars, or single
notes - is this not possible in Sibelius?
Try the Layout - Document Setup dialog.
So please, Coda, don't make me use Sibelius too much...
I use both Finale 2k4 and Sibelius. Both programs are perfectly fine, but
you do have to get used to the particular way they work. Sounds like you
could do with spending a little bit more time with the Sibelius manual...

Oh, I thought FinWin2k4 had EPS support all the way? This is new to me.

AFAIK, EPS support in Windows NT/2000/XP is not an Fin2004
issue at all. Do you know any Finale version where you can export
readable EPS files using WinNT/2000/XT?

And personally, I don't understand why EPS export from within
Finale is such a big issue after all. Many other solutions are available
if you really need it, such as using Acrobat to produce the EPS, etc...

It won't work with dumb programs that import EPS, like Microsoft Word,
because they do not read the DSS comments and search the system for the
proper fonts to embed.

EPS export from Finale is a big issue for some of us who use Finale to
produce large documents containing music (religious worship sheets and
hymnals, in my case). Doing a Finale-PDF-EPS-Pagemaker workflow would be
hideously time-consuming for me. I'm already considering switching to
Lilypond+Latex, even though the installation/maintenance of those programs
is nightmarish compared to Finale+Pagemaker.

Here is why: Imagine you are doing a thematic catalogue, which, due to
certain limitations cannot be done directly in Finale. Using direct EPS
export you can easily use the graphics tool to mark a part of a page and
export that as EPS. This is infinitely easier than to use Acrobat (which
also costs extra money, and which I don't own) to export whole pages and
then crop them afterwards.

Imagine the catalogue was to include more than 400 incipits. I really do not
want to crop everyone separately after export.

Yes, it *is* a Finale issue. Coda's programmers blame the problem on
Windows, but other companies manage to create applications than can
successfully create usable EPS files.

So, it *is* a problem with Finale, and with *every* version of Finale
for Windows.

I don't use EPS export myself, so it's a non-issue, but the claim
that it's the fault of Windows is just so incredibly bogus that it
makes me mis-trust anything else Coda tells us about problems with
Finale.

 And... What's your point? I said it wasn't a Fin2004 issue. I did not
say it wasn't a Finale issue.

By definition, if it's an issue with all versions of Finale, it's an
issue with any particular version.

[Finale] EPS Sibelius vs. Finale (was: EPS at last bla bla....)

2004-06-26 Thread Kurt Gnos
Hi,
I just played around with Sibelius (Win XP), and, as someone had told, EPS
export works perfectly! Fonts ok, scalable perfectly, TIF preview as
expected, everything behaved as it should. I chose normal EPS, and there
are a lot of graphic format selections. Printed fine on my LaserJet 2100 M.

BUT: I found no function to export a selection, I could only export a page.
Normally I need a separate symstem or two to input in Word or Quark Xpress.
So I missed a function as in Finale: Double click and highlight the
selection you want to export.

I found no function to edit the size of a single page to separate the
symstem(s) I wanted to export, I could only edit the margins of all pages,
and not very confortably, either.

I found no function to alter the size of a staff, or some bars, or single
notes - is this not possible in Sibelius? I must say Finale may be more
complicated (doesn't bother me after 14 years or so) but much more flexible.

Midi output does not work as it should (and as I set it up)
BUT: EPS export works all the same
So please, Coda, don't make me use Sibelius too much...
cheers
Kurt
