Re: [Finale] EPS export from F2010 is black in MS word

2011-10-05 Thread SN jef chippewa

so i took darcy's advice and prepared the document in iWork's pages.
quite nice. a couple of questions.

i note that pages converts eps upon import and that the resulting PDF
that i generate is missing some characters from my custom fonts.
however using PDF images in the pages document works fine.

is there anywhere to define the specific percentage of images in
relation to their original? this is a key element in all graphic
programmes (and even word) but i can't find it anywhere in pages.

i had problems having images inline and being offset into the left
margin, in the end i had to place all images as floating, whcih is a
drag when i alter the text and create less or more lines of text.
also i wanted to copy the german original (with the graphics) and
paste for the english translation, but had to redo all the graphics
for the english... boring.

Re: [Finale] EPS export from F2010 is black in MS word

2011-10-05 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi Jef,

Unfortunately, Pages doesn't support this. If you need an image to be exactly
75% of its original size, you have to calculate the dimensions manually and
enter them into the size boxes.

It hasn't been an issue for me -- most often I know the specific dimensions I
want and I don't care what the percentage reduction needed to get there might
be -- but I can see how that would be a pain if you needed to reducing or
enlarge a lot of images by a specific percentage. Probably your best solution
in that case would be to resize them in an image editor before bringing them
into Pages.

Darcy,

Aha! Floating and In line were the salient words I needed! I was able to
find them and read up on them in the help file, and sure enough, they work
exactly as advertised, and then some! I can even convert one type to the other
as needed if I change my mind.

Thanks so much.

the degradation in image quality in word is remarkable, i just did
what you suggested and don't think there is any way this could be
better than the 1200 ppi tiffs.

i generated a PDF of an image from graphic converter to PDF and
printed that (to paper); inserted the PDF at 100% in a word doc and
printed directly from word. the two are significantly different in
quality. generating a PDF from the word doc and printing that
produced the same quality (bad) as printing directly from word.

seems the only way i could get higher quality would be to not use
word, but some other proper graphics programme like in design or
illustrator.

My suggestion is to not EPS from Finale. Instead, make a PDF, crop
as needed, and insert the PDF graphics into the Word file.

Or you could use a graphics program to convert the existing EPS files to PDF.

Hi Jef,

What version of Word are you using? I remember Office 2004 for Mac being
particularly bad about image quality.

Anyway, Apple's Pages application will import your existing Word file (and even
save in Word format, if that's important), and also allow you to place PDFs
without any image degradation.

Re: [Finale] EPS export from F2010 is black in MS word

2011-09-17 Thread SN jef chippewa

I always print to Adobe pdf printer driver (include fonts), open in
Acrobat, crop, save as EPS, import into Word. It shows as rough tif
preview graphic on screen but prints fine.

yes this works fantastic! and the print quality is excellent (even
though the PDF i generated from finale is 150 ppi because you can't
print using the acrobat driver on leopard), i thought maybe word was
the prob, but it handles eps well, but PDF it handles like ass.

trying again the graphic tool in finale, i exported a selection,
placed in word. the image appears black on screen but prints fine
from word. although the quality is slightly -- but visibly -- poorer
than with the FIN-PDF-EPS-WORD approach!!! but... when generating a
PDF from this word doc, the PDF shows and prints the black box...
g.

so i think your solution is the best i have come across, but it just
seems stupid that FIN-PDF-EPS-MS gets higher quality and better
functionality than FIN-EPS-MS.

exporting EPS from finale i can view them correctly in graphics
programmes but then when using them in word they appear as full black
images. tif (1200 ppi) functions fine.

i saved the same word file as PS, opened in distiller (set to convert

anyone know why this might happen?
