Hi, Chuck – re: the octave shifts when copying from one staff to another: take
a look to make sure “respect ranges when copying” isn’t selected.

Go to Edit – Preferences – Edit and uncheck if you don’t want octaves to be
altered into the target instruments’ ranges...which MAY be the problem you’re
experiencing. That one caught me immediately when I started working in 2014.5.

Sure, but I don't see any excuse for:

- Not fixing the HP problem with overlapping note-on note-off causing
notes to go silent

- not fixing the failure to save music spacing.

These are quite fundamental and affect nearly every user. I believe
these are both bugs that were introduced in 2014, and among the top
reasons for 2014's bad reputation in the market. I would have thought
these would be at the top of the fix list.

I didn't keep a good list of all the things that were really messed up
in 2014, so I can't say that one release is quantitatively better than
the other. My gut feel is that 2015.5 is a little better than 2014 on
balance, but it is disappointing to see so many of the real problems not
addressed, and new bugs introduced.

If this is the beginning of a process to take the product quality
seriously, then it will be the best news in several years. If, on the
other hand, we are looking at another year before anything else is
fixed, that would not be good.

I hope we can hear from the company with some idea about how they plan
to proceed.

This is what I don’t get. I’d assumed that a number of the beta testers were
well known folks on this list.
I’ve beta tested notation products before and understand that things need
prioritising and that pro users are often not the significant user base but..

2014.5 is better in that it doesn’t crash with dialogue boxes in El Capitan.
Non sticky ties and staff styles are new problems for me - as in 2014 in El
Capitan was fine here.
Items that won’t delete are a serious problem.
Pause and stop not ending playback is also a pain. I rarely need playback but I
regularly hit the spacebar by accident…

Actually, with version 2 I think Musescore got a lot closer to Finale
than many think, and for many people who use notation software,
Musescore is all they will ever need. Not professional engravers, but
hobbyist musicians, students, and composers who need good notation but
not all the intricacies of Finale or Sibelius (or the expense).

While I do some professional engraving projects when the opportunity
arises using either Finale or Sibelius if the customer specifies, I find
that when left to my own choices and for all the new projects of my own
I use Sibelius and get wonderful results without many of the
frustrations that recent versions of Finale have introduced. These are
the kinds of projects which for years I used Finale for. So I'm not
quite sure why you're saying that there is "no real competition" for
Finale. Certainly there is with Sibelius, except that its corporate
ownership doesn't seem to be any better than Finale's corporate
ownership. And some new notation software users are going with Notion,
although it's got a ways to go before it will catch up with Sibelius or
Finale for more complex notation needs. But at least Notion has a
usable tablet version using the same file format which allows users to
do a lot while away from their primary computers without the somewhat
lossy migration using MusicXML (but at least that's a huge improvement
over MIDI migration). That's something that both Sibelius and Finale
would do well to emulate!

Steinberg's notation product is still far from the marketplace so we
have no clue whether it will be significant competition or not --
certainly they are pouring lots of development dollars into it with no
publicly visible corporate pressure to rush an incomplete product to
market. And their development team is headed by a person with a proven
track record of leading solid development of notation software.

Re: [Finale] New Bugs 2014.5

2015-11-22 Thread Graeme Gerrard
I don’t get it. I am sure the new owners and engineers have been working hard
and long on 2014.5. But again, a release has emerged that can’t have been
thoroughly tested or it wouldn’t have seen the light of day!

The problem must be in the testing cycle. Users, actual users, not novice or
pretend users, seem to only take a few hours or days to turn up problems,
problems that should have been detected in alpha tests and never made it to
beta.
The need to “get something out the door” seems to over-ride pride in producing
something good. I am aware it is a massively complex product, or set of
products.
..and when there’s no real competition….
Actually Musescore isn’t anywhere near Finale yet, but there is a drive there
to make a better product that is clearly missing among “professional” producers.

How is it a small step forward?

So far all I've read about are new bugs, supposedly fixed bugs which
aren't actually fixed, and old bugs which weren't even addressed.

What are the advantages of 2014.5 over 2014 or 2012?
I'm a Windows user, so the compatibility with newer OSx upgrades isn't
important to me (although if it's true, I'm happy for Mac users).

Re: [Finale] New Bugs 2014.5

2015-11-21 Thread Craig Parmerlee
FWIW, I have been keeping a list of the bizarre behaviors I have seen
with 2014.5. I have about 10 new bugs that never happened to me before
now and several of the most annoying prior problems that have not been
addressed.

One of the things that drove me crazy was the bugs in the Cautionary
Accidentals. Supposedly this was fixed in 2014.5, but it isn't. The
plug-in does far more harm than good. I used this on every score back
in 2012. Now I have to do all that manually to make sure it doesn't get
screwed up. The fact that this was on the list of fixes tells me there
isn't a very good understanding of some of the problems.

On balance, I think 2014.5 is at least a small step forward.

Flipped ties keep reverting. Staff styles also keep going back to initial state.

[Finale] New Bugs 2014.5

2015-11-21 Thread Steve Parker
I seem to have a few new bugs in 2014.5.

Some expressions are un-deletable with the delete key, but delete if selected
then deleted from the control-click menu.
Sometimes stop and pause (and the spacebar) won’t stop playback which continues
for a few bars or to the end.

Finale also seems to be loading up instruments that are not in the score.
