Christmas Tree Tips and Local Grower List from Cooperative Extension

Consumers who wish to purchase a freshly-cut Christmas tree for the
holidays can find an updated list of local farms on the Tompkins
County Cooperative Extension web site at: http://ccetompkins.org/fresh-trees .

The list includes U-cut tree farms in Ithaca, Groton, Newfield,
Trumansburg, Berkshire and Spencer. In addition to a variety of
pre-cut or U-cut trees, some farms also offer potted live trees;
fresh roping, swags and wreaths; handmade crafts; and refreshments
and wagon rides to make your holiday visit memorable. There are also
tips on the CCE-Tompkins web site on how to care for your live tree
and how to plant it successfully.

New York has approximately 1,800 acres of Christmas trees and ranks
fifth nationally in Christmas tree production. Buying a locally-grown
tree helps to sustain local farmers, keeps land open and productive,
and strengthens our local economy.

The following tips from the Christmas Tree Farmers Association of New
York will help your fresh-cut, locally-grown tree look good
throughout the holidays. 1. After bringing the tree home, cut
one-quarter inch off the base of the trunk. Keep the tree outdoors in
a container of water and protect it from the wind and sun until
you're ready to decorate. This helps the tree retain moisture. 2.
Before you bring the tree indoors, make another fresh cut of at least
one-quarter inch off the base of the trunk. This reopens the tree
stem so it can take water immediately. Place it in a stand with fresh
water. Do not allow the water level to drop below the fresh cut or
the stem will reseal. 3. Remember, trees are very thirsty and may
drink from 2 pints to 1 gallon of water a day. Use a stand with
1-gallon capacity or more. Keep your tree away from drying heat
sources such as sunny windows, hot air ducts and fireplaces. Check
the water level daily and supply fresh water as needed.

Additional interesting Christmas tree facts, history, and tips for
selection and care, can be found on the University of Illinois
Cooperative Extension site at:

County Cooperative Extension web site at:
http://ccetompkins.org/fresh-treeshttp://ccetompkins.org/fresh-trees .

The list includes U-cut tree farms in Ithaca, Groton, Newfield,
Trumansburg, Berkshire and Spencer. In addition to a variety of
pre-cut or U-cut trees, some farms also offer potted live trees;
fresh roping, swags and wreaths; handmade crafts; and refreshments
and wagon rides to make your holiday visit memorable. There are
also tips on the CCE-Tompkins web site on how to care for your live
tree and how to plant it successfully.

New York has approximately 1,800 acres of Christmas trees and ranks
fifth nationally in Christmas tree production. Buying a
locally-grown tree helps to sustain local farmers, keeps land open
and productive, and strengthens our local economy.

The following tips from the Christmas Tree Farmers Association of
New York will help your fresh-cut, locally-grown tree look good
throughout the holidays. 1. After bringing the tree home, cut
one-quarter inch off the base of the trunk. Keep the tree outdoors
in a container of water and protect it from the wind and sun until
you're ready to decorate. This helps the tree retain moisture. 2.
Before you bring the tree indoors, make another fresh cut of at
least one-quarter inch off the base of the trunk. This reopens the
tree stem so it can take water immediately. Place it in a stand with
fresh water. Do not allow the water level to drop below the fresh
cut or the stem will reseal. 3. Remember, trees are very thirsty
and may drink from 2 pints to 1 gallon of water a day. Use a stand
with 1-gallon capacity or more.

Lyme Disease on the Increase in Tompkins County

2011-07-01 Thread Sandra Repp
The Tompkins County Health Department has
released the following advisory concerning the
numbers of Lyme Disease cases occurring
here. Their web site:
http://www.tompkins-co.org/healthwww.tompkins-co.org/health

LYME DISEASE ON THE INCREASE IN TOMPKINS COUNTY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
For more information contact: Karen Bishop at
274-6604 or Theresa Lyczko at 274-6714

June 30, 2011 (Ithaca, NY) – The number of Lyme
Disease cases haas steadily increased in Tompkins
County since 2006 the Tompkins County Health
Department reports. Karen Bishop, Community
Health Nurse Supervisor noted that in 2006 there
were 2 cases; in 2010 there were 70 with a steady
increase in the interim. In the past, Tompkins
County residents who had Lyme Disease usually
acquired it while traveling in other areas of the
state or country. Now most of the cases are
locally acquired, she said. In 2011 to date
there have been 14 cases of Lyme Disease and 28
are probable cases pending confirmation. That is
a serious increase, Mrs. Bishop noted. Lyme
Disease is here and everyone should take the
necessary precautions to prevent it.

Tick-borne diseases are a serious health threat.
Lyme disease may affect the skin, nervous system,
heart and joints. If not treated early, it can
have permanent and severe health effects.

Lyme disease is caused by the bite of an
infected deer tick. In some areas, any contact
with plants or bushes, even in the backyard, has
the risk of contact with ticks, Mrs. Bishop said.

She urged all Tompkins County residents to remember:
   * When in wooded and grassy areas, wear
light-colored clothing and tuck pants into socks and shirts into pants.
   * After every two to three hours outdoors,
check for ticks on clothing or skin. Brush off
any ticks on clothing before they can attach to your skin.
   * Do a thorough check of your body at the end
of the day. Pay close attention to the back of
the knees, behind the ears, scalp, arm pits and
back. Check your children and pets, too.
   * If you remove an attached tick within 36
hours, the risk of infection is small. To remove
a tick: Use tweezers, grasping the tick near the
mouthparts, as close to the skin as possible.
Don't squeeze, crush or puncture the body of the
tick, which may contain infectious fluids. Pull
the tick in a steady, upward motion away from the
skin. After removing the tick, disinfect the bite
site with soap, rubbing alcohol or hydrogen
peroxide. Wash your hands carefully. Record the
date and location of the tick bite. If a rash
appears or you experience flu-like symptoms over
the next 30 days, contact your health care
provider immediately. As of July 1, the New York
State Health Department is no longer providing a tick identification service.
   * If you consider using repellents be sure to
follow label directions. Do not allow children
to apply repellents themselves. Use only small
amounts of repellent on children.looks like and how to remove it.

Early Late vegetable planting dates!

2011-05-10 Thread Sandra Repp
Are you wondering whether it's too early now to plant your potatoes
or lima beans? Or perhaps you'd like to start your home vegetable
garden in July after a vacation; what can you still plant at that
time to harvest before the first fall frost?

Visit the CCE-Tompkins web site for guidelines that list a variety of
popular garden vegetables along with their suggested first and last
planting dates (as seeds, sets, or transplants) for Tompkins County,
NY. Use our charts to decide what vegetables to put in first, and
also when to plant later crops that will mature to a useful size by fall.

Paste http://ccetompkins.org/planting-dates into your browser,
or visit: http://ccetompkins.org/garden/food-gardening/first-planting-dates

The site includes a printable 2-page PDF (31kb) with suggested first
and last planting dates for many vegetables.

For more information, or answers to specific home gardening
questions, contact the CCE-Tompkins GrowLine or Patricia Curran at
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County (607) 272-2292, or
email Pat at p...@cornell.edu.

Be sure also to check the CALENDAR OF EVENTS at
http://ccetompkins.org/calendar for details on our Annual Spring
Garden Plant Fair (5/14), upcoming home gardening workshops, and
local kitchen garden tours (in late summer)!

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County will host a
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Fair on Sunday, March 5th from
12:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Boynton Middle School Cafeteria, 1601 North
Cayuga Street in Ithaca. More than 15 farms serving the Tompkins
County area are expected to be on hand to talk with consumers about
their farms and CSA programs. In addition to the traditional
vegetable CSA, attendees will find meat, fruit, herb, baked goods,

opportunities. Attend the CSA Fair to learn about the many benefits
of CSA, meet and talk with farmers, and find out which CSA program

children while parents circulate and table space to sit and review
material you gather. CSA programs fill up quickly so don't miss out

[sustainable_tompkins-l] 11/3: Learn to Burn - Workshop on Wood Heating

2010-10-20 Thread Sandra Repp

For Immediate Release
October 19, 2010

LEARN TO BURN
Everything you need to know about heating your
home with firewood and pellets in an hour and a half!
Plus - a chance to win a wood stove thermometer!

Wednesday, November 3, 6:00–7:30pm
at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca
$5/person (includes a 16-pg booklet on heating with wood)
Please preregister: 607-272-2292

Temperatures are dropping and thermostats are
going up! As heating bills start to rise, more
people are looking into heating their homes with
wood. Heating with wood can save you money while
helping the local economy. It also has enormous
environmental benefits over oil and other fossil
fuels, including lower transportation needs and
reduced environmental impact of extraction, and
it leads to better management of our forests and
results in near zero net carbon emissions. The
key to making the most of this precious resource
is proper harvesting and employing best burn
practices so that emissions are kept at a
minimum, efficiencies are as high as possible,
and it can be sustainably harvested for generations to come.

If you now heat with firewood or pellets, or if
you’re interested in changing over to this
renewable energy source, this seminar is for you.

10/23: Free Tree Walk - location change

2010-10-14 Thread Sandra Repp

Changed location for Free Tree Walk:

Subject: TREE WALK

Hello Folks,
On Saturday, October 23rd at 2:15pm I will be hosting a tree walk.
The focus of the walk will be identification, the role of different
trees in the forest, and uses of trees for food, medicine, and
survival. This walk is free because I believe that identifying trees
is just as important as knowing how to read. If you wish to make a
small donation, the money will be put towards tree planting.
The walk will be held at Ecovillage. Take 79 West from Ithaca for a
few minutes (about a mile outside of the 35mph zone), then take a
left on to Rachel Carson Way. Follow the driveway all the way to the
back and stay to the right. We will meet in the parking lot near the
Song common house. It will be appreciated if you don't speed when
driving down Rachel Carson Way.

If you have any questions call the Primitive Pursuits office at (607) 272-2292
Feel free to forward this email to anyone who you think would be interested.
Hope to see you there,

Citizen Scientists wanted!

2010-08-17 Thread Sandra Repp

Citizen Scientists Wanted

The Soil Insect Ecology lab at NYSAES is looking for volunteers to
assist in a project monitoring the expansion of invasive crane flies
in NYS. The goal is to utilize a network of citizen scientists to
help survey, detect and monitor the expansion of these insects in the
state. Of particular interest are the following counties: Chautauqua,
Niagara, Erie, Monroe, Ontario, Tompkins, Tioga, Cortland, Jefferson,
Oswego, Oneida, Herkimer, Madison, Saratoga, Warren, Fulton,
Dutchess, Ulster, Putnam, and Nassau.

Participants would be asked to go out to areas of turf grass, such as
home lawns, city parks, or sports fields, and, if present, collect a
few specimens to be sent in for identification. No prior knowledge of
these insects is required, and we will provide more detailed
instructions to participants at a later date. This 'scouting'
activity would occur at the most two or three times a week over a two
week period in September.

7/28: Late Blight Advisory

2010-07-29 Thread Sandra Repp

For Immediate Release: July 29, 2010
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County
(607) 272-2292

Late Blight Found in Upstate NY

Tompkins County Cornell Cooperative Extension has received a
report that Late Blight has been found upstate for the first time
this year, in a home garden in Norwich in Eastern NY. Please note
that, as of this time, Late Blight has NOT been found in Tompkins County!

Gardeners here may wish to apply a protective fungicide
spray to tomatoes and potatoes, according to Monika Roth, Agriculture
Program Leader at CCE-Tompkins. Protective sprays include copper
(organic) or daconil (not organic). When spraying, it is very
important to get good coverage as an infection can begin any place a
spore lands that is not protected.

Home gardeners are advised to check tomato, potato and
tomatillo plants weekly for symptoms of Late Blight. According to
Roth, Late Blight generally begins at the top the of the plant, not
the bottom. Leaf samples can be taken to CCE-Tompkins at 615 Willow
Avenue in Ithaca for confirmation, but tomato leaves brought in by
gardeners thus far have all been affected with Septoria Leaf Spot,
not Late Blight, Roth says.

To learn more about Late Blight:
   * Visit http://nysipm.cornell.edu/publications/blight/Cornell's
NY State IPM website for Late Blight history, prevention, symptoms and more
   * See pages by Dr. Meg McGrath, Cornell Plant Pathologist, on
Late Blight on Tomato at:
