[Fink-devel] bootstrap change

2003-06-06 Thread David R. Morrison
Dear fink developers,

There has been a small change to the bootstrap, related to my recent project
to make Fink compatibile with newer versions of perl. There are two
additional packages present in the bootstrap now: storable-pm560 and
system-perl580. Only one of these will actually be built when bootstrapping
fink, and the user will have to choose which one (in the middle of the
bootstrap, unfortunately). However, I have tested this, and fink can now
be bootstrapped when /usr/bin/perl is either version 5.6.0 or version 5.8.0.

(This is all partly based on a guess that the developer preview for 10.3
will have perl 5.8.0: i'm tyring to get ready for that in advance.)

If anyone else tests this, please let me know how it goes.

Re: [Fink-devel] setting paths for new users

2003-06-06 Thread Patrick Näf
At first, the script didn't work for me, because I haven't fink
installed in /sw.

I have taken the liberty to put some stuff into the script so that it
now tries to determine the location where fink is installed. This is
done in the following order:

1) if a cmdline arg -l location is specified, it tries this first
2) if not specified or unsuccessful, it tries location /sw
3) if unsuccessful it will search the whole file system tree for
possible locations
4) if still unsuccessful it asks the user for a location

If during any of the points 1-4) an executable named
location/bin/fink is found, the lookup process is stopped and the
original script routine is resumed.

Remarks:

1) might be useful if something (e.g. an installer) drives the script
3) this lookup will take quite some time, of course depending on the
size of the target system. On my machine it takes ~ 3.5 minutes :-(
Maybe a simple progress indicator would be nice :-)

If it is decided to use my additions, it would be a good idea if
somebody else had a look at it, although, of course, I have tried to
test my stuff as thoroughly as possible. At least for me the script now
works. BTW: I'm using bash as my login shell.

Cheers
Patrick

pathsetup.command
Description: Binary data

Am Mittwoch, 04.06.03, um 17:34 Uhr (Europe/Zurich) schrieb David R.
Morrison:

Many of you will remember the discussions in March and April about
somehow
automating the setting of paths for new users.

Martin Costabel has written a nice little app for this purpose (really
a shell script executed by the Terminal). It needs testing (and
possibly
critiquing). Let me encourage all fink developers to both try it out,
and read the script.

You can find this in Martin's experimental directory: the path in CVS
is
  experimental/costabel/pathsetup.command.sit

(You'll need to unpack this with Stuffit... what you then get is a
double-clickable shell script.)
Feedback to the list please.

  Thanks,
  Dave

[Fink-devel] diff stable - unstable

2003-06-06 Thread Martin Costabel
There are a number of packages where the info files in stable and in
unstable differ, although they have *the same version and revision* numbers.

Somtimes these are trivial wording differences in the docs, but often
some bug was fixed in one of the 2 versions and not in the other.

This is not good and should be fixed.

Here is a list obtained by

[Fink-devel] Competition for Fink: gentoo

2003-06-06 Thread Christian Schaffner
From http://www.gentoo.org/

We're pleased to announce that the Gentoo platform will soon be
available for MacOS X. This means that users will be able to enjoy the
the power and simplicity of the Gentoo platform and Portage where they
happen to be, on the operating system they are currently using -- even
if that operating system isn't GNU/Linux. We want to give our users
more choices than anyone else, including the ability to use non-GNU
operating systems and non-Linux kernels if they have that particular
requirement or desire.

We are currently getting our infrastructure ready (mailing lists,
project page, etc.) for this project and integrating Portage for MacOS
X into our mainline Portage sources. I'll follow up with another news
item when this initial process is complete.

How is this going to affect the fink development? Is there anybody in
the fink team who knows more about gentoo?

Just thought I might everybody know. Have a nice day, Chris.

HI,Fink-devel

  BANNED CD!

I
have been receiving emails saying that I'm contributing to the moral
decay of society by selling the Banned CD. That may be, but I feel
Strongly that you have a right to benefit from this hard-to-find
information. So I am giving you ONE LAST CHANCE to order the Banned CD!
With this powerful CD, you will be able to investigate your friends,
enemies and lovers in just minutes using the Internet. You can track down
old flames from college, or you can dig up some dirt on your boss to make
sure you get that next promotion!
Or maybe you want a fake diploma to hang on your bedroom wall. You'll find
addresses for companies that make these diplomas on the Banned CD. Need to
disappear fast and never look back? No problem! Using the Banned CD, you
will learn how to build a completely new identity. Obviously, the Powers
That Be don't want you to have the Banned CD. They have threatened me with
lawsuits, fines, and even imprisonment unless I stop selling it
immediately. But I feel that YOU have a Constitutional right to access
this type of information, and I can't be intimidated. Uncle Sam and your
creditors are horrified that I am still selling this product! There must
be a price on my head!
Why are they so upset? Because this CD gives you freedom. And you can't
buy freedom at your local Walmart. You will have the freedom to avoid
creditors, judgments, lawsuits, IRS tax collectors, criminal indictments,
your greedy ex-wife or ex-husband, and MUCH more!

This worked fine for me, although it would be nice if it told you you're
already configured if you use a bash shell. When I opened it, it opened
the terminal and just gave me a shell with no feedback.
Hmm, it should show the following (it does for me):

Your environment seems to be correctly
set up for Fink already.

Re: [Fink-devel] setting paths for new users

2003-06-06 Thread Patrick Näf
The script is meant for newbies, for a first-time installation, in
this version primarily for distribution with the binary installer. The
binary installer installs always into /sw/ (even if /sw may be a
symlink to another place).
Aha, I didn't realize that. Well, then keep the script as it is, it
does the job.
