Ah, sorry, I got your message backwards, it seems. I know you are
currently cleaning up the mirror lists; I just wanted to understand
which one you are working on. Thanks.

Martin, just to clarify: Jesse has volunteered to help keep fink's
list of sourceforge mirrors current, by comparing to sourceforge's
own list of its mirrors and doing other testing.

It is a project on sourceforge, that I happened to be downloading;
http://psi.sf.net (I think). Jabber is an open protocol for instant
messaging, like AIM, except open.

I am looking at the list of mirrors listed by Sourceforge (not the list
of SF mirrors listed by Fink), and finding that internap, west, us, and
eu are not on that list (although all the other SF mirrors in Fink's
list ARE listed at Sourceforge).

Right; sorry, it was late at night when I wrote that. Yes, checking
what's on the list and what's not is much easier if fink's list is in
the same order as SF's.

Yeah, I wish I knew a better way to check if a mirror was working at
SF; any pointers you have would be much appreciated.

At first I was thinking "huh? why does it matter?" but you mean for

That makes sense... although in my experience, SF doesn't always list
all of the mirrors that they have active, so we still need to be careful

[Fink-devel] fink-mirrors sourceforge update

2006-11-26 Thread Jesse W
Suggested update to /sw/lib/fink/mirrors/sourceforge :

internap (nam-US: http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/ )
isn't listed as a sourceforge mirror as of now, at least not for the
psi jabber client. It does respond to pings, though.

Further testing is indicated.

Also, west.dl, us.dl and eu.dl arn't listed (I don't know if they are
redirection links, but...)

Also, it would be nice to resort the items in that file by the order
they are listed by sourceforge (assuming the order isn't significant in
the file for some other reason); I've included an example of that,
below.

[Fink-devel] fink-mirrors SF list update

2006-09-23 Thread Jesse W
There's been a number of changes in the Sourceforge download mirrors
since the Fink list was updated (March 2006); 8 mirrors are gone, and
one has been split into two pieces. I was unable to verify us.dl or
eu.dl as working or not, but I have had various troubles downloading
from us.dl, so it may not be. I've included an updated copy of
/sw/lib/fink/mirror/sourceforge below. If there's somewhere else I
should put this, please let me know. If this has already been fixed in
CVS, but not released, let me know anything I can do to expedite the
release of a new version of the fink-mirrors package.

Thanks for the reports. You are only prompted with a list of questions
if some of your mirrors are not already set, but it seems that I forgot to
write the new mirror choices to the config file! Fixed in 0.0.4, to be
released shortly.

The strange thing is it doesn't behave the same everywhere. I have been
doing this update on 3 machines, and on two of them it only asks me
whether I want to keep all the mirror settings, and I only have to hit
return once. On the third machine, it goes through the whole mirror list
every time, so I have to hit return about a dozen times. Weird.

A. Version 0.17-3 addresses this (correct this if not correct) . Following the instructions below (from http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/cvsaccess/index.php) should resolve this issue.

Updating the Package Manager

Note: As of September 20, 2001 it is no longer necessary to update the package manager separately; it is treated like any other package. It's still possible to update it directly from CVS, though this is usually only interesting for people creating packages, not the average user.

The package manager must be updated through a separate directory and the inject.pl script. That script puts package descriptions and tarballs for the fink and base-files packages in your Fink tree and builds them.

For the first time procedure, you need a temporary directory (called tempdir in the example) which is empty (or at least doesn't contain a subdirectory named 'fink'). The procedure goes like this:
cd tempdir
cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/fink login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/fink co fink
cd fink
./inject.pl

The following package will be installed or updated:
fink-mirrors
Failed: No mirror site list file found for mirror 'sourceforge'.

This is not surprising, because the new fink doesn't contain the mirror list any more. I think the fink-mirrors package should have a hard-coded source URL, not a mirror:sourceforge one.

I am now trying to find a way out of this by

1. reinstalling the old version of fink-0.17.1-1
2. fink fetch fink-mirrors
3. fink install fink-mirrors (which will ask for reupdating fink, too)

OK, this worked.

I think if this is not fixed, we will soon need a new FAQ entry about this problem :-)

Merry Christmas everyone

Well, good for you. There is still the question why you and others keep
seeing this problem. There was a "window" of less than 3 hours two days
ago where this problem could come up for people who were selfupdating
then. It was fixed with the release of fink-0.17.3-1. If it came up much
later (allowing for the synchronization latency of the rsync and anoncvs
servers), there must be some mechanism at work that is yet unexplained.
Unfortunately, none of those claiming to have had this problem later,
even with fink-0.17.3-1, have given a precise account of what they were
doing to get into the problem and out of it.

As far as I am concerned, there is no clear evidence that there should
still be anything wrong, and I consider this affair closed.

It seemed to, but when the next step didn't work, I immediately
went for my backup disk. Sorry for not testing it further.

Please announce when 0.17.3 is out so I can rsync safely.

And now that I've restored yesterday's backup, it has no clue about
"fink-mirrors". So, I can't update the .info file because that'll
also trigger the update of the fink version, but that'll break the system
so that I can't get the mirror file.

Chicken and egg. What's the path out of here? HELP!

Hmm, it still breaks with

Not sure where this comes from. Perhaps because "Master first" is the
default, and the config file is to be remade?
