RE: CISSP Certification
CISSP also requires some ongoing effort to retain certification, although it is not extensive... -Original Message- From: Kunz, Peter [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, July 09, 1999 12:18 PM To: 'Houser David DW'; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: CISSP Certification What about CISA? For more about the certification, visit http://www.infosecnews.com/scmagazine/1998_04/lastword/lastword.html then go to www.isc2.org. As to the worth, that's a loaded question. Is it going to make your life better? Not by itself. The preparation process to take the test will give you some grounding to determine how much you know about a whole realm of different security issues (Ten very broad categories) and what you need to learn to be able to answer questions about those issues. It will also force you to learn some concepts you didn't know before and study up on some things you thought you did know, and probably will change the way you look at a lot of things. The test itself (six hours, about 250 questions) will further test your reaction to stress under pressure and will force you to think in simplest terms. It will also raise your blood pressure, provide an overwhelming sense of relief when you are done, and hopefully will give you a measure of where your knowledge base is in relation to that of a standard set by a body of security professionals. However, I know a number of accountants who have passed their CPA, but only a few that I would let keep my books... The certification may lead to a job offer (or more), certainly won't hurt your resume, and should increase your worth to your current employer. It won't guarantee any of those things, and to be honest doesn't mean a lot without compatible experience, attitude, and background. -- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED][SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 06, 1999 9:43 AM Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: CISSP Certification Is there anyone out there with this certification and passed the exam? RE: CISSP Certification
According to the (ISC)2 program director, some exam sessions have had as little as 10% pass and some as many as 80% pass. The passing grade is based on a minimum competency "cut-score" so the passage rate varies considerably from session to session. I don't have any stats on the retests but do know you can only take the examine once per test period and there are only two test periods per year. -Original Message- From: Paul McNabb [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, July 08, 1999 11:00 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: CISSP Certification Does anyone have the statistics for the number of people that take the CISSP test and DON'T pass? RE: CISSP Certification
The CISSP is a seven year old certification aimed toward IS security managers. It is administered by an international consortium of security organizations know as IISSCC or (ISC)2 for short. There web site (www.isc2.org) has information on the exam, sites and dates. There's a study guide available. Last year the exam was given in the US, Canada, Mexico, Finland and the U.K. It's 250 questions covering 10 knowledge areas. Candiates have 6 hours to complete it. It only took me 5 hrs and 58 minutes! -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 06, 1999 6:44 AM Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: CISSP Certification Is there anyone out there with this certification and passed the exam? Re: CISSP Certification
It has about the same credibility as the current MCSE certification. It is not very difficult to pass ergo passing the exam gives very little indication of one's ability...one could say: could one say a false sense of security Sorry, but I just HAD to. Info follows below: Certification for Information System Security Professional: A certification reflecting the qualifications of information systems security practitioners. The CISSP examination consists of 250 multiple choice questions, covering topics such as Access Control Systems, Cryptography, and Security Management Practices, and is administered by the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium or (ISC)2 (www.isc2.org). The (ISC)2 promotes the CISSP as an aid to evaluating personnel performing information security functions. The certification was first available in 1989; between 12,000 and 15,000 IS practitioners are now certified.
