i learned emacs through the interactive tutorial and gdb with the quick
reference guide. i think that either of these approaches would provide great
value for learning the fish shell and its cool features. the interactive
tutorial would build muscle memory, while the quick reference would give a
concise overview of what the fish shell can do, how to do it, and reference the
excellent longer forms of documentation such as mark's article.

I think it's a great idea.

I've done a little bit of this publication thing myself in the past and
would be happy to contribute in any way.

There is plenty of books out there for bourne, korn, and of course
bash, and doing a fish book would be a welcome addition - the others
can be referred to as examples of why fish is better. :)

On an administration side of things it is well worth your while getting
an ISBN for the publication as well. Of course, one can write 90% of
the book before thinking about this.

Having the book in progress in a repository (e.g., git) where you can
invite users to push additions, elaborations, and changes is handy too.

Hope this helps,

Hi Rob. If writing an ebook for fish, you might want to have a look at the
Bash documents at http://mywiki.wooledge.org/ as examples of ideas for
documentation. Something like the BashPitfalls for fish (if it has any
pitfalls) would be very cool.

[Fish-users] Introduction and plans for a book about Fish

2018-06-11 Thread Robert O.
Hi all,
I am Rob from Hungary. It’s good to be here among you Fishers :)
I have been a Fish user for a couple years now, it’s my choice on Mac OS, Arch,
and on numerous VPN and VPS boxes, wherever terminal access is a must.

I won’t bore you with my reasons, I believe everyone who is here knows most of
them, and ‘because Fish is pure awesome’ really sums it up, anyway.

Apart from my introduction, I’m also writing to ask the Fish community whether
there is any interest in an ebook about the shell.

I’m planning to write a somewhat lengthy book, explaining Fish’s features in
more detail, as well as giving handy tips for daily use.
I am also hoping to feature a cookbook section, with ready-to-use scripts,
solutions to possible issues (e.g. things to look out for when porting Bash
scripts to Fish, debugging scripts, etc).
Any input on this is welcome, in case of scripts or examples, with proper
credit, of course.

Cheers,
Rob
