[Flashcoders] Server side Flash position open in San Francisco at Flash game platform startup

2008-09-12 Thread Moshen Chan
Hi guys, I have a position open in San Francisco. This is more of a
'server side flash' position. Thanks!

Work on the Mochi Media Flash ad infrastructure and developer tools.
Your code gets run millions of times a day worldwide to our network of
flash games. Write compact, efficient and reliable software from the
developer APIs down to the server delivered Flash that communicates
with our back end technologies. Understand the ins and outs of
Ã…ctionscript 1 through 3 while coming up with new and creative ways to
better deliver the user experience and tools our developers expect.
The ideal candidate will have solid overall engineering experience
from common server side technologies to client side code with the
flexibility to dive anywhere in between. They will have the tenacity
to solve problems under hard constraints and quickly understand the
impact of code and design changes in software that gets delivered
millions of times a day to
different Flash environments. If you worked on the Flash player,
you've probably got the skillset we need. Familiarity with
ActionScript 1-3 and proficiency in UNIX a plus.

If that describes you, let me now describe Mochi:
Mochi Media is a startup dedicated to fueling the creativity of the
gaming community. Through the MochiAds network of games, we reach over
60 million users each month, providing tools and services to support
the creativity of game developers and enabling advertisers to reach
their target consumers. The company has been operating for two years
and continues to grow at a phenomenal pace. Since its launch, Mochi
Media has achieved status as one of the hottest startups in the space
and is backed by Accel Partners and Shasta Ventures.

Key Stats:

* 20% impression growth every month for almost a year
* 60MM unique users every month
* Strong and rapidly growing revenues
* Small team where you can come in and have an immediate impact

Great article Colin, thanks for your work!

 hi all,
i just published an article called Charges Against ActionScript 3.0
covering the things people don't like about ActionScript 3.0.

it's posted on O'Reilly's InsideRIA, here:
 http://www.insideria.com/2008/07/the-charges-against-actionscri.html

The article discusses the following issues:

1. The removal of on()/onClipEvent() from Flash CS3 makes creating
 simple interactivity hard.
2. Getting rid of loaded .swf files is hard.
3. Casting DisplayObject.parent makes controlling parent movie clips
 hard.
4. The removal of getURL() makes linking hard.
5. The removal of loadMovie() makes loading .swf files and images hard.
6. ActionScript 3.0's additional errors make coding cumbersome.
7. Referring to library symbols dynamically is unintuitive.
8. Adding custom functionality to manually created text fields, to
all movie clips, or to all buttons is cumbersome.
9. The removal of duplicateMovieClip() makes cloning a MovieClip
 instance (really) hard.

if you have comments, please leave them on the article so i can respond if
 necessary.
