[Flashcoders] Q:Justifying Flash 8 Content

2006-10-31 Thread bitstreams

I'm working on a large commercial site that uses FP7 based content.

What are some of the arguments and/or approaches that Flash developers have and
are using to push the transition to FP8 content?

The bottom line is really about providing the best user experience possible

Hi
I have a pretty basic question concerning registering Movieclips that are

//CODE END

How do I register 'holder' with MyClass?

[Flashcoders] Q:Playing with BitmapData

2006-10-21 Thread bitstreams
Hi
There are two things I am trying to do with bitmap data.
The first is to analyze every pixel in an image using getpixel and then store
this info as xml data for later manipulation.

Can anyone offer suggestions to speed up this process?

The second techinique is to simulate splitting up an image into its
corresponding red, green and blue channels, showing how a 'true color' image is
achieved when these three channels perfectly overlap one another.

Do I simply need to use the Copychannel method of the BitmapData object for
this?

[Flashcoders] Q; tweening distortions using BitmapData and transformMatrix

2006-10-10 Thread bitstreams
Hi
Can anyone suggest the best approach for tweening image distortions using the
transform Matrix?

I'd like to not only simulate a variety of 'photoshop-like' filter distortion
effects but also add tweens to these distortions.

So I assume I need to first define start and end transform matrices,and how
long I want the tween to take.
Then for each iteration of the tween cycle I need to render/attach the bitmap,
add/increment a tween amount to the matrix, and repeat.
But not sure how to proceed

[Flashcoders] Q: passing flash form data with NO server side scripting

2006-09-27 Thread bitstreams
Hi
I have an unusual flash form project in that the hosting provider doesn't
support ANY server side scripting.
My goal is to simply pass name value pairs from a form...I assume the only way
I can do this is using sendAndLoad and a LoadVars object. Since the hosting
provider dooesn't support any server side scripting, instead of targeting a
specific file on the server, I was simply going to target a directory and then
retrieve the name value pairs from the server's log file.

Does this make sense?

Any other solutions greatly appreciated!

[Flashcoders] Q:LoadVars send WITHOUT refreshing the browser

Hi
Currently working on a simple flash form using LoadVars object.

However, I have an unusual request in that I'm not supposed to refresh the

I currently have:

but this causes the browser window to refresh. I don't want to target a blank

How do I change the above to NOT target any browser window?

[Flashcoders] Q:AddProperty and getters/setters

2006-09-24 Thread bitstreams
I know AddProperty was useful in creating getter/setters when defining AS1
based classes

ie
//CODE BEGIN
//create a new square class
_global.Square= function(side){
this.side=side

this.addProperty(area,this.getArea,this.setArea);
}

Square.prototype.setArea=function(area){
this.side=math.sqrt(area);
}

Square.prototype.getArea=function(){
return Math.pow(this.side,2);
}

//CODE END

Is this same AddProperty technique useful with AS2 classes?

[Flashcoders] Q:2 Way Comunication between classes

I have 2 menus systems that I need to establish communication between.

Each menu system is controlled by a class that uses EventDispatcher to keep

The problem is when I try to establish 2 WAY communication between these 2 menu
classes.

I can use composition to communicate ONE way, but when I try and reference each
class from the other, I get some pretty funky things happening! I think its
because its a many to many relationship...

//constructor
function FirstClass(){
var sc= new SecondClass()

//SECOND CLASS

function SecondClass(){
var fd= new FirstClass()

Hi
I have two menu systems.

Each menu system is comprised of 'movieclip buttons; which in turn are

So two classes, one for each menu system.
What's the most efficient way to communicate back and forth BETWEEN the menu
systems?

I can't use composition since I would be instantiating several instances
From Moock's AS2

// The back end class is analogous
// to the superclass in inheritance.
class BackEnd {
  public function doSomething () {
  }
}

// The front end class is analogous
// to the subclass in inheritance.
class FrontEnd {
  // An instance of the back end class will be stored in
  // a private instance property, in this case called 'be'.
  private var be:BackEnd;

  // The constructor creates the instance of the back end class.
  public function FrontEnd () {
be = new BackEnd();
  }

  // This method delegates work to BackEnd.doSomething().
  public function doSomething () {
be.doSomething();
  }
}

[Flashcoders] Q: FlexBuilder for AS development

2006-04-24 Thread bitstreams
Hi
After watching Colin Moock's presentation yesterday at FITC, I'm interested in
using FlexBuilder for my AS development.

Currently there is both a trial (time restricted) version avilable and a beta
version available on Adobe labs.

Is anyone using Flexbuilder for AS as opposed to Flex coding? What are your
thoughts?
Thanks

[Flashcoders] Q:Problems with Tween class

2006-03-08 Thread bitstreams
Hi
having some difficulty getting the handlers working with the built-in Tween

also, does the Tween class actually exist in more than one place?

//CODE START

import mx.transitions.easing.*;

function myTweenFunc(){

myMC.onTweenUpdate = function(value) {
this._x = value;
}

var tw = new Tween(myMC,-310, 20, 500,false);
tw.easingEquation = Regular.easeInOut;
tw.FPS=61;

 //the following handler doesn't work
tw.onMotionFinished=function(){
trace('finished moving lance');
 }

}
myTweenFunc();

//CODE END

Any suggestions?

[Flashcoders] Q: Referencing a class method from a _parent MovieClip reference

2006-02-12 Thread bitstreams
Hi
having what I think is a scope issue I can't seem to resolve.

In one Class I have:
//::CODE BEGINS:

for(var n=0;n9;n++){
var mc=target.createEmptyMovieClip(+n,target.getNextHighestDepth());

c=new Cell(mc,1,cellwidth,api);

c.update()  //works!!
}
//::CODE ENDS:

later on in the same class I need to call the 'update' method of my 'Cell'
class but only
on certain instances... of the container Movieclip(s) that the Cell class was
instantiated inside.

(mc would represent a reference to the container Movieclip for my Cell class)
mc.c.update()  //obviously doesn't work

I think I have to somehow point a method of my container Movieclip to the Class
method

Does this make any sense?
Any suggestions?

[Flashcoders] Q:implementing quadtrees

2006-02-06 Thread bitstreams
I need to perform distance calculations between a number of fixed 'hotspots'
and a draggable movie clip on a 2d plane.

To reduce the number of calcualtions I only want to be concerned with those
'hotspots' that are 'closest to' the movieclip at any given time.

So I need to perform some sort of 'proximity test'

In an earlier post someone pointed out Grant Skinner's Proximity class, which
is useful if all of your hot spots are moving.

Martin Wood alos opnend my eys to something called 'quadtrees' which is a
method of spatial partitioning absolutely essential in reducing the number of
calculations in
games involving a lot of 3d rendering and spatial movement.
A great reference here:
http://www.gamedev.net/reference/articles/article1303.asp

The simple quadtree I have in mind would be composed of a 16X16 grid of cells
or 'leaves'.
The dimensions of our draggable clip would also be smaller than each cell.
 To simplify things each 'base node' I would define as having 2X2 or 4 cells.
So there would be a total of 256 cells and 64 'base nodes'. The total number of
nodes in this scenario would be:
4   (1st level nodes)
+
4X4  (2nd level nodes)
+
4X(4X4) (3rd level or 'base nodes')
=
84 total nodes

So, to begin, I create this grid, then create my nodes array (or arrays). Each
node in the array would be composed of x,y,width,height (probably simpler to do
the width, height calculation up front than simply using bounding points)

At any given time there would be four 'base nodes' that would be considered
'nearest neighbours'..we need to check for and return the current plus 3
additional 'base nodes' depending on which one of four cells in the current
'base node' we're 'over' at any given time (this is easier to ilustrate on a
sheet of graph paper).

But the net result is that we are dealing with only 4 as opposed to 64(the
entire grid) 'base nodes' or 16 vs 256 cells...a savings or reduction of 16X.

So i guess what I'm asking is
What is the best way to set up the node array(s)? (nested , associative, using
objects, etc)
and
Given the current x,y coordinates of the draggable movieclip and the nodes
array(s), how to perform the quadtrees calculaton?

Thanks

[Flashcoders] Q:creating a 'snappable' class

2006-02-03 Thread bitstreams
Hi
I'm creating a 'snappable' class, that would work with a predefined set of x,y
pairs or 'hotspots'.
When a dragged movieclip was within a 'offset' distance of any of these
hotspots it would 'snap to' and stop drag.
The best way of doing this I thought would be to simply pass an array of
predefined x,y pairs as an object into the class when it was instantiated.
However, having to cycle thru an array, especially if there are a huge number
of 'hotspots', while dragging doesn't seem very efficientcan anyone suggest
a better way of approaching this?

[Flashcoders] Q: All OOP or ??????

2006-01-28 Thread bitstreams
Hi
I was curious what approach most developers are using for their projects:

1 doing ALL of there development for every project within an OOP based
framewrok, ie everything, from drawing and/or placing of objects,
transitioning, interacting with server special effects, is done with a custom
Class based framework and is entirely OOP based.

2 Or do most developers currently use a more 'hybrid' approach, with a lot of
assets placed on stage at authortime and referenced via an '#include' if code
is needed to be outside the FLA file. If third party Class code already exists
(ie tween engines) then that is used rather than re-creating it from scratch.
Custom classes are developed ONLY if there is some need for code re-use.

Related to the above discussion there has been a lot of talk about use of
design patterns, and , specifically the Model View Controller 'meta' pattern.
Having just finished 'Head First Design Patterns' it all makes sense now. But
there seems to be more than one way to interpret MVC, especially when it comes
to whether the controller should be separated from the view

3 Which ways do developers implement the MVC pattern?

All the best

[Flashcoders] Q:Class relationship puzzle

2006-01-20 Thread bitstreams
John
No, Global can and does function independently of Local. It doesn't 'need'
Local.

The basic sequence again is this:

Application class is instantiated on the main timeline or _root.

Global is instantiated from within the 'Application' class which also
references the Global class thru a _global variable.

Local is instantiated afterwards and references the Global class thru the same
_global variable.
Local then passes an object to a public method in the Global class.

This public method in Global then triggers a public method in Local (a
reference to the Local public method was contained in the object passed to the
Global public method)

Does this make sense?

[Flashcoders] aseditor discussion

2005-12-27 Thread bitstreams
I've used just about everything on both PC and Mac.

On the PC (currently better supported for developers)
PrimalScript, Sepy, and although haven't tried it yet, Keith Peters mentions
great things about  FlashDevelop
http://www.flashdevelop.org/community/

My choice (although pricey) PrimalScript, and the next release will finally
support code folding. There's a special New years eve offer for version 4

On the Mac
Currently trying and enjoying Textmate. It has a intelligent project View and
cold folding.
Clean and simple yet powerful enough for my needs. Last time I tried Sepy found
it to be buggy.
Eclipse is of course powerful but java based apps always seem a bit slow on OSX
IMHO.
Xcode is wonderful, but not enough support yet for Actionscript. If someone
could get the class modeller to work with Actionscript and figure out how to
get a truly intelligent project view, then Xcode would be THE killer
development app for AS coders on the Mac.

Now if PrimalScript and Textmate could only support UML, with export to stub
code.
There are a number of UML tools out there for Java. I use and like the free
tool called Jude.

Hope this helps

[Flashcoders] Q:using BitmapData to Record Screen Actions

2005-12-07 Thread bitstreams
Hi
I want to create a simple app that allows the creation of 'recordings',
basically movies that are recordings of anything that might happen on the stage.

I'd appreciate any feedback on my basic logic which is as follows:

1) Create a 'snaphot routine whose only purpose is to create a collection of
'snapshot' bitmaps of the MovieClip we are recording
2) Create a 'makefilmstrip' routine whose purpose is to compose a 'filmstrip'
using the previously created bitmaps, one per frame, in a blank 'host'
movieclip

//BEGIN PSEUDO CODE

function snapshot(mc:Movieclip);

//create bitmap with unique name

//take snapshot of moviceclip passed in
uniqueBitmapname.draw(mc);

//store a reference to this Bitmap in an array

bitMaparray.push(uniqueBitmapname);

//continue until done, presumably controlled by another 'start and stop
recording function' controller
//when done call the 'make filmstrip' function
}

function makefilmstrip(){

//first attach Movieclip (our blank filmstrip) to stage giving it the name
'filmstrip'
//it has a stop action on frame 1

// step2: create empty movieclip within filmstrip giving it a unique name and
depth

//step3: attach previously created bitmap to this holder movieclip
//we reference these bitmaps throught the array created in the snapshot function
//not sure if it is possible to reference previously created bitmaps this way,
suggestions?

var mybitmapreference = bitMaparray[counter];//

uniqueholderMovieclip.attachBitmap(mybitmapreference);

//increment global counter
counter++
//increment frame in filmstrip , not sure if this is possible but we need some
way of advancing the frame in filmstrip
//so that the next uniqueholderMovieclip Movieclips are created on sequential
frames, does this make sense??

filmstrip.nextFrame();
//continue steps 2 3 till we run out of bitmaps

}//end makefilmstrip

//END PSEUDO CODE

Any feedback appreciated

2005-12-04 Thread bitstreams

2) Create a 'makefilmstrip' routine whose purpose is to compose a 'filmstrip'
using the previously created bitmaps, one per frame, in a blank 'host'
movieclip

//BEGIN PSEUDO CODE

function snapshot(mc:Movieclip);

//create bitmap with unique name

//take snapshot of moviceclip passed in
uniqueBitmapname.draw(mc);

//store a reference to this Bitmap in an array

bitMaparray.push(uniqueBitmapname);

//continue until done, presumably controlled by another 'start and stop
recording function' controller
//when done call the 'make filmstrip' function
}

function makefilmstrip(){

//not sure if it is possible to reference previously created bitmaps this way,
suggestions?

var mybitmapreference = bitMaparray[counter];//

uniqueholderMovieclip.attachBitmap(mybitmapreference);

//increment global counter
counter++
//increment frame in filmstrip , not sure if this is possible but we need some
way of advancing the frame in filmstrip
//so that the next uniqueholderMovieclip Movieclips are created on sequential
frames, does this make sense??

filmstrip.nextFrame();
//continue steps 2 3 till we run out of bitmaps

}//end makefilmstrip

//END PSEUDO CODE

Any feedback appreciated

[Flashcoders] Q: Converting from base 10 to hex?

2005-12-02 Thread bitstreams
In order to use the fillRect method you need to pass in the color as a Hex
value.

To start I want to fill with a 50% grey, which as an argb number would be
255,128,128,128

I tried using the following function from Guy Watson's tutorial:

function argbtohex(a:Number, r:Number, g:Number, b:Number)
{
return (a24 | r16 | g8 | b)
}

I get the value '-8355712'

What am I doing wrong??

[Flashcoders] Q: Random wave pattern on single line

2005-12-01 Thread bitstreams
I want to create a random wave pattern on a single line using the drawing API.
Can anyone suggest a starting point for creating and drawing the random motion?
I need to vary the amplitude.

I seem to recall seeing a downloadable flash demo/tutorial of motion on an
animated wave path, I believe it was a boat on waves, but I forget
where.
ANyone recall seeing this?
Thanks in advance

[Flashcoders] Q: Advanced math book for designers?

2005-11-30 Thread bitstreams
Hi
Just finishing the excellent Head First Design Patterns book. I was wondering
if anyone might recommend something similar that focused on advanced math
concepts, like matrix math, bezier curves, etc, and whose target audience might
be designers?
Thanks in advance.

[Flashcoders] Q: dedicated UML tool for Actionscript 2?

2005-11-30 Thread bitstreams
Hi
I've been using dedicated UML tools to create class diagrams from Java code and
output stub code from diagrams.
Outside of Eclipse and the the online gModeler, does anything similar exist yet
for actionscript development?

Thanks in advance

Hi
Has anyone seen examples of animating a gradient in flash8? Recall seeing
something as part of the original maelstrom demo, but having some difficulty
reproducing the effect.

Thanks in advance

A question for people using Eclipse.

What UML/Class diagram plugin do you use/recommend for AS2 development?
Any other favorite plugins?

Thanks in advance
