[flexcoders] ColdFusion vs. PHP as the back-end

2006-07-06 Thread Bjorn Schultheiss

Im using a CF backend in my
personal flex joints.

Its very easy to set-up and the wizards
are a nice touch for the UI guys.

If you want to go hardcore though, Java
is your best option.

I dont need Php, Im not
poor.

Subject: [flexcoders] ColdFusion
vs. PHP as the back-end

I started my
quest to explore Flex rather recently; I never did much with v1.5, mostly
because the cost involved to launch any commercial solution created with it.
Now, with 2.0 its pretty exciting to see everything that is now, rather
easily (and inexpensively!), possible to do.

But one
thing Im not quite clear on yet: what is the difference, or benefit
from, between basic remoting as is possible with PHP/CF/ASP.NET, and the
extended interaction with ColdFusion which makes it possible to pass
actual instances of Actionscript Classes and have them map directly into a CFC
Instances and vice versa (a quote from Tim Buntels blog)?

Thanks for
any insights!

Ville

[flexcoders] Re: Webservice Results Format

2006-07-06 Thread Tim Hoff

Hi Will,
It's much easier to work with one-to-many data relationships, if the xml is in a hiarchical format. In your example, the header node is at the same level as the lines node. That makes themsiblings. Since an order has only one header, you can move the header node items into the order node (attributes work here too). This will make it easier toassociate the children with the parent. If you're interested, here is a similar one-to-manyexample; that also illustrates DataGrid expansion-in-place.
http://www.cflex.net/showfiledetails.cfm?ChannelID=1Object=FileobjectID=472
I hope that this helps you,Tim Hoff--- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, "Will Morgan" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All, The results from the webservice I'm using look something like this: order header order12345/order /header /headers lines line /line /order It's similar to a master / detail view. I can only bind to either headers or orders. headersDataGrid.dataprovider = "{webservice.getOrder.lastResult.headers}" I was hoping I could use headersDataGrid.selectedItem.lines to show the lines detail in another dataGrid, but because it is only bound to headers, I can't do it. Is there a simple way to do this within Flex or would you suggest changing the way the results are returned?

2006-07-06 Thread Tim Hoff
Hi Rohan,

You can use the timer API for this (see docs). Start the timer when
you click the button, stop it when the result is returned. The
difference between your start time and stop time will be in
milliseconds.

[flexcoders] [Flex2] Changes to the Cairngorm package structure

2006-07-06 Thread Thomas Rühl -akitogo-

Hello list,

I just came across a question of architecture and I'm not quite sure, if

terms of usage. Maybe someone, maybe folks from Adobe, could give me
some hint here.

I believe Cairngorm is just Adobe's vision of
architecture, there is no licensing on this and you can refactor it as you
wish.
But what do you need to do ? Before refactoring,
make sure you really need to.
Cairngorm has been created with the voice of large
clients developping large Flex Apps, and i see it as very flexible.

Right know, i cannot see any reason for
refactoring.
Anyway, i'm sure Adobe will be very interested in
your thoughts !

Ahh, I'm confused. However, I hope, this will be the last project with them.

[flexcoders] logical transaction commit with multiple flex destinations

2006-07-06 Thread busitech
We have come to the realization that Flex is designed to commit per
destination, and not per transaction.

The problem is that we have multiple destinations involved in a
logical transaction.

Have any of you encountered this problem, and decided to live with it,
or have you found a way to batch the commit of multiple destinations?

[flexcoders] Mixing and image and shapes

2006-07-06 Thread mudwump_vx
I am a newbie at Flex, Flash and ActionScript, so please bear with me. I
am trying to mix a background image (loaded via mx: Image) with
placing a scalable circle on top of the image using ActionScript, but I
can not figure out how to do this after two days of going through the
documentation. I can get the image on the canvas just fine, but I am
wrapped up trying to figure out how to incorporate the drawcircle(). I
know it must be simple, but I can't figure out the right combination.
Can anyone help me? Thanks ahead of time.

RE: [flexcoders] ColdFusion vs. PHP as the back-end

2006-07-06 Thread Ville Walveranta

Thanks for that response; it was very
helpful! Ill need to do some tries of my own as I generally end up being

ColdFusion vs. PHP as the back-end

First, you CAN pass ValueObjects via Java and PHP.
Java via OpenAMF, and PHP via AMFPHP. ColdFusion just now has the edge.

Second, Remoting as we refer to it, allows you to:

1.call back-end services like you'd call regular
methods

2.pass class objects instead of vanilla data (like
Java POJO's), or XML or URL params for simple string / value pairs. Strong
typing for server communication... pimp!

3.allow better communication between you, the client
developer, and the back-end developer on what you are sending
eachother

4.pass the data in binary

So, myCFC.doStuff ( somePersonVO );. If you are sending
a Person Class to some method, then the back-end guy knows exactly
what you are really sending him. Same when he says to you, Yeah,
it'll return a list of PersonVO's. That means, you'll get an array
full of Person ValueObject class instances. Finally, usually,
binary AMF communications is smaller than regular AJAX XML, WebService, and
HTTP posts.

Dave Wolf from Cynergy systems will have contentions with
that 4th point, mainly because his tests with WebServices seems to have
renderered good results in 1.5. Flash Player 9, however, has greatly
improved upon AMF's size via AMF3 encoding, so it'd be good to hear if he has
any new tests.

ColdFusion vs. PHP as the back-end

[flexcoders] Not a designer, need some advice

2006-07-06 Thread Jeremy Rottman

I am working on a flex real estate app. I am sooo not a designer, and design does not come natural to me. However the coding portion of flex does. Right now I am working on a section where I add agents/vendors/clients to a new listing, or an already existing listing. I already have the custom compoent created, I am just at a standstill on where to place it on the screen. I cant decide if it should be a popup tilewindow, or if I should have it all right on one screen. I am using a really simple setup to display agents to admins, It is just a DG with 3 columns.Here is a screenshot of the dg. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

take effect in reverse. For example, when I execute the following
psuedo-code you would think that the new blank LastName would bind
into the LastName textbox before the validation gets reset.

1. Clear ModelLocator.getInstance().Affiliate.LastName
2. Reset validator for LastName

Instead, step one does clear the LastName in the ModelLocator but the
change does not take effect in the form until sometime AFTER the
validator is reset which causes validation to immediatly fail because
the field is required.

I know that one of the changes since Flex 1.5 is that validators are
now bound to a property in a control as opposed to a property in the
ModelLocator. Is that why this method of resetting the form doesn't
work anymore?

Thanks,
Moishe Groger

Re: [flexcoders] Excel, Flex Database

That's cool - does anyone know if this has been (is being) done for
other MSOffice formats (namely PowerPoint and Word)?

Cheers,

Darron J. Schall wrote:

  Yes, it's possible for Flex to load Microsoft Excel data. However, it's
not easy. You have to write a custom parser for the .xls file format.
You can pull the raw binary data in via URLLoader setting it's
dataFormat to DataFormat.BINARY, and then parse the .xls data into
something usable for the Flex client.

See Jim Cheng's discussion on it here:

I have question regarding application development.

I need to develop little application which can load data from database

Is it possible that flex can load the excel data or suppose if I made
changes in excel sheet and click on save it can save data into
database using flex?

I know, I already seen such video when fabridge introduced, I am not
able to find the link of that video and examples.

Can anyone tell me whether this is possible or not with flex?

I put it on the project signup list, but if theres anything else I need to do someone let me know (I understand it can take a while for everything to get setup). Ill be sure to add you to the committers list so that you can get in on the mailing list and code repository. Im also planning to put together a page under my fusiox.com domain to hold the projects path, progress and documentation. Im not likely to spend much time on this specific project until next month, but the code I have so far is freely available for use and modification. When we get a single code base going well decide our path and take a look at integrating our work one at a time. My initial goals so far are outlined below. Compare CSS inheritance/weighting/specificity behavior against w3c spec and consider best implementation. (I think its critical to address this up front) Fix any remaining case sensitivity issues (I havent checked for improvements or alternatives in final release yet). If nothing else, I can write up a custom CSS text parser. Resolve remaining issues in shorthand implementation (possibly recursive shorthand?) Add features for styling states (similar to a:hover, but hopefully includes custom flex states) ??? Maybe add support for flex specific style items (using dynamic MXML?) ??? You tell me. [flexcoders] Best way to round trip binary data from flex client to server and back

2006-07-06 Thread davidgolds
I want to save a ByteArray from a flex app to a web/http service, then
later reload binary data from that service to a ByteArray in flex. On
the server side I'm using rails.

I hacked up a way using a base64 encoder/decoder written in in AS3and
a http service, but I suspect I'm doing this the hard way. What's the
best way?

Thanks,

David.

PS: For context, in some cases the binary data is a PNG and I use the
PNGEncoder sample from this site for that. Other times, the data is my
very own homegrown binary data format.

[flexcoders] How to set object type coming from a webservice?

2006-07-06 Thread Artur Kordowski

For set a object
type coming form a webservice we've created in Flex 1.5 a objectToClass
function:
public static
function objectToClass(obj:Object,
constructorFunction:Function):Void{ obj.__proto__ =
constructorFunction.prototype;
constructorFunction.apply(obj, []);}

The function call
shows like that:
objectToClass(this.Customer,
project.vo.Customer);

In this way we can
always check if the object Customer is from type Customer.

Is there in Flex 2
a way to do it similar? Have any one an idea?

Thanks a lot,
Artur

[flexcoders] Showing data in Datagrid

2006-07-06 Thread zorelake
Hi all! I've just started with Flex and I have some doubts I hope
you could solve.

I have a Datagrid filled with the result of a Java Method
(getRestaurants). This method returns a list of Restaurant objects
with the fields name and adress.

mx:DataGridColumn headerText=Name dataField=name/
mx:DataGridColumn headerText=Address dataField=address/

I have no problems doing this, but I need to show another property
called position. This property is an instance of a Position class,
whose properties are x and y.

I mean:

Restaurant {
  name: String;
  address: String;
  position: Position;  // Contains x and y
}

In order to show x and y in the Datagrid, I'd need something
like this:

mx:DataGridColumn headerText=X dataField=position.x/

but it doesn´t work. I've tried in several ways, but with no results.
I've checked the field position and it contains the correct
values. So, I only need to show them!!.How could I do this?

I'd be very pleased if you could help me!
Thanks in advance!

P.S: Sorry for my English :)

[flexcoders] SWF's not unloading

2006-07-06 Thread Angus Johnson

Hi,I have a canvas called parentView into which I add SWF child objects via...parentView.addChild(mySWF);mySWF.load();No problems loading. When I want to change the contents of parentView and swap out the loaded SWF I run...
parentView.removeAllChildren();// get new mySWFparentView.addChild(mySWF);mySWF.load();Now I have noticed that the previous SWF's don't seem to unload. I have an example that runs a sound clip and I can still hear that playing even if I have replaced mySWF content in the parent several times. I also noticed that flash memory usage continues to increase with each load so something is wrong. Debug correctly shows only one child loaded.
SWFLoader class does't have an unload() method. removeAllChildren() should work right?CheersAngus

No problem Brendan

Maybe it was too much of a lob ball to resist ;-)

The only reason I was asking is because I am trying to fix someone else's

causing my Flex Builder to run so S L O W L Y (extra emphasis on the
'slow') that I can't even run my app in debug. I bumped up the memory in

Re: [flexcoders] file uploads

2006-07-06 Thread hank williams

Hard to respond without seeing the code (a link or a paste of the text would be good). But I suspect the code presumes event handlers that are not implemented in the snippet you are using. fileRef needs at least one event handler to handle what the user does when he selects an item for upload, and lots of other stuff.
You need some code that looks like this: p_fileReference.addEventListener(Event.CANCEL, onCancel); p_fileReference.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onComplete); p_fileReference.addEventListener(
IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, onIOError); p_fileReference.addEventListener(Event.OPEN, onOpen); p_fileReference.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, onProgress);// p_fileReference.addEventListener(
SecurityErrorEvent.SECURITY_ERROR, securityErrorHandler); p_fileReference.addEventListener(Event.SELECT, onSelect);This code should be called when you instantiate the fileRefrence.the on parameters above are references to functions that handle events. Their declarations look something like this:
 public function onSelect(p_event:Event) :void { public function onCancel(p_event:Event) :void { public function onOpen(p_event:Event) :void { public function onComplete (p_event:Event) :void {
 public function onProgress (p_event:ProgressEvent):void{ public function onIOError(p_event:IOErrorEvent) :void {Hope this helps.RegardsHankOn 7/6/06,

[flexcoders] Applet running on Flex (production version)

2006-07-06 Thread tinywhistles

Hi

In my application I have Flex as the UI. Each of the client systems have
a scanner attached. The requirement is that on hitting the scan button
on the Flex UI, I should be able to scan the image and display it on the
same Flex window.

In this I have been able to achieve the following :

On the hit of Scan button, my MXML calls an inline JavaScript
function, which inturn opens up a new HTML window. The HTML page calls
the applet which does the actual scanning. After scanning, the image is
rendered in the HTML window itself. My concern is that I do not want to
use an HTML page because taht ways I am taking the user out of the RIA
look-n-feel. And as Flex does not provide APIs to read images from
scanners, I need to use the applet as well.

Can someone please tell me how to display the image in a Flex window,
considering the image is coming as an output from an Applet? Or, is
there a way to run the applet inside a Flex window totally? I have tried
calling the Applet from the JS function directly, but it doesn't work.

Pls give your inputs.

Thanks
Rohan

I'm not a lawyer, but I see no reason you cannot rename the

would *expect* you are obliged to keep the (c) notice and the license file in
any distributions, but you are free to use and modify the

Hi Clint,

I've just this very moment solved that one! :-) I couldn't get what
was going on either, but this is what I did:
For the sake of trying it out a created a new application to do it.
I left all the imports and var declarations where they were, but put
all the rest of the method calls and functions inside another function
and then called that function using the creationComplete application
tag attribute.
see below
?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?
mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"

   public var allTypes:Array = new Array(imageTypes,

   public function initApplication(): void

Re: [flexcoders] Flex release version: XML attribute string too long

2006-07-06 Thread Jonathan Bezuidenhout

Hi,No nasty characters - just escaped ones.It turns out that it is not that the string is too long - it is because it contains some escape sequences - it just happens to be that these strings are extra long.
Something like lt;ligt; makes it break - amp; works though.
Also, something like #60; fails. If you have something like #13; in your XML the app cannot even compile. All of these are perfectly good XML!The above is using the mx:XML source.../ construct where the XML is sucked in at compile time and the AS structure is created.

I am working on a flex real estate app. I am sooo not a designer, and
design does not come natural to me. However the coding portion of flex does.
Right now I am working on a section where I add agents/vendors/clients to a new
listing, or an already existing listing. I already have the custom compoent
created, I am just at a standstill on where to place it on the screen. I cant
decide if it should be a popup tilewindow, or if I should have it all right on
one screen. I am using a really simple setup to display agents to admins, It is
just a DG with 3 columns.Here is a screenshot of the dg. Any
help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [flexcoders] Tabbed Browsing support? htmlText, navigateToURL(), Javascript?

2006-07-06 Thread Greg Hamer

Nick,

Thanks. After posting on Sunday I continued researching this.

There is a CSS3
spec to add a target-new: tab property. To my knowledge, no browsers have
yet implement target-new: tab.

So true, until browsers implement some standard way for Flash Player to issue
a new tab call, there may be nothing that Adobe can do.

I originally posted my question following a designer asking whether we might
use Flex for a site nav bar on a website. Can anyone suggest why Flex or Flash
is so little used for website nav bars? (Two exceptions that I know of are
Jeremy Allaire's new company BrightCove.com using a Flex nav, and Nike.com using Flash navs.)

Any insight that others can provide would be appreciated.

Best regards,

For me the problems are ...

1) With navigateToURL(), how would you specify new tab?

2) With anchors in htmlText, Flash Player provides the context
menu.The Flash Player browser plug-ins include in the context
menu the option Open in new window. (The freestanding Flash Player
omits this option.)

3) With _javascript_, as a Flex/ActionScript developer I currently do not
possess the knowledge how to code a _javascript_ solution.(fyi ...
I have done some google searches on this, but so far no luck.)If
anyone can point me to a _javascript_ code solution, it would be much
appreciated :-)

Note: For those from Adobe that read this list ... With IE7's release
and it's support for tabbed browsing, if Flash Player provides no
support for opening links in tabs it will be increasing apparent that
Flash Player is essentially unaware of tabbed browsers.)

just curious...PBHOn 7/6/06, Jonathan Bezuidenhout [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi,No nasty characters - just escaped ones.It turns out that it is not that the string is too long - it is because it contains some escape sequences - it just happens to be that these strings are extra long.
Something like lt;ligt; makes it break - amp; works though.
Also, something like #60; fails. If you have something like #13; in your XML the app cannot even compile. All of these are perfectly good XML!The above is using the mx:XML source.../ construct where the XML is sucked in at compile time and the AS structure is created.

[flexcoders] Using and image as a link

2006-07-06 Thread Henry
I have been trying to get and image to go to a URL on a click. I am
sure that I am making this harder than it should be. However i would
like to know how you guys/gals might be doing this. I was trying to
use an actionscript function that is predefined in Flash, but that
does not seem to work.

Do I need to create my own actionscript for this?, or is there
something i am missing that is super simple?

Thanks so much for your help!

[flexcoders] WebService Cairngorm 2 Example

2006-07-06 Thread JesterXL
Ben wanted to see a WebService example via Cairngorm 2. I figured it'd
benefit others as well. It utilizes the Amazon Search API to search for
books. If you do not have an Amazon API key, you can get one for free at
amazon.com; takes about 25 seconds to sign up.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Webservice Results Format

2006-07-06 Thread Will Morgan

Hi Tim - thanks for the reply. I'll check out the link you provided. I ended up using a filter function, which works well :) I've been begging our IT manager to fix the way he's returning operation results, but graphic designers like me don't get much say in technical matters around here!
 private function resultHandler(res:ResultEvent):void { myLinesAC = res.result.Lines; myHeadersAC = res.result.Headers; headersDG.dataProvider = myHeadersAC;
 }  private function filterLinesOutOfHeader():void {  myLinesAC.filterFunction = doFilter; myLinesAC.refresh(); }
 private function doFilter(item:Object):Boolean { return item.CustomerOrderNumber == headersDG.selectedItem.CustomerOrderNumber; }  private function userChange():void {

Hi Will,
It's much easier to work with one-to-many data relationships, if the xml is in a hiarchical format.

  It's similar to a master / detail view.  I can only bind to either headers or orders.  headersDataGrid.dataprovider = {webservice.getOrder.lastResult.headers}
 I was hoping I could use headersDataGrid.selectedItem.lines to show the lines detail in another dataGrid, but because it is only bound to headers, I can't do it. Is there a simple way to do this within Flex or would you suggest changing
 the way the results are returned?

2006-07-06 Thread ben.clinkinbeard
OK, if I do a describeType(responder) within my delegate class, I see
that it does contain a reference to the correct command class, and it
sees the onResult and onFault methods. I have tried many things to get
these methods to fire (the service call is completing successfully),
but none of them have worked. Here is my current incarnation:

public function callSearchService( term : String ) : void
{
var token : AsyncToken = service.ItemSearch();
token.resultHandler = responder.onResult;
token.faultHandler = responder.onFault;
token.addEventListener(mx.rpc.events.FaultEvent.FAULT,
responder.onFault);
token.addEventListener(mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent.RESULT,
responder.onResult);

Any help will be enormously appreciated.

thanks,
Ben

[flexcoders] mx:HTTPService - relative url's - relative to swf vs relative to html wrapper

2006-07-06 Thread dehemke
I'm new to Flex development.

The problem I'm having is resolving relative urls within the swf,
specificly in HTTPService calls.

The url in the HTTPService for a html wrapped swf resolves from the
html wrapper location, this causes a problem as the swf might be
called from multiple html wrappers in different locations.

Is there a way to force relative urls to resolve based on the swf
location instead of the html wrapper location?

Re: [flexcoders] Re: WebService Cairngorm 2 Example

2006-07-06 Thread JesterXL
I did the as WebService because I like the code hinting.

If I don't register for a result, I don't get one. I think you can
hardcoded the whole event.token.resultHandler thing in the ServicesLocator,
but... who the hell has default result handlers, know what I mean? You
typically call a method, and want to know about the result in a specific
function, so, I specifically utilized addEventListener.

The factory is NOT necessary, but it makes it really easy to build View's
that can show BookVO's vs. this XML text. You could have the Command do
that, but typically, any server mess I always put in Delegates', Factories
included. Commands should just call Delegates, and set data on
ModelLocators. It can't do that if it has to massage data, so I let the
Delegate's handle all that insanity. I do the same thing with Ruby on Rails
and ColdFusion Pre-7.0.2.

[flexcoders] why does rowCount in DataGrid not match number of visible lines in grid

2006-07-06 Thread hank williams

I am trying to discover the number of lines visible in a DataGrid. The actual number is 5.75, meaning that the last row is 3/4 visible. The problem is that the rowCount property is 7. I would think that the answer would be either 5 or 6. but not 7. So I am wondering, how is this calculated? Am I interpeting this wrong?

  Just wanted to jump in here and say that using ColdFusion does have
  some advantages over Java. For one thing, not having to write Java
  code to do JDBC manipulation of your data is a big one. We believe
  that for RAD development, CFML (especially given the Flex Builder

  A CF solution should scale very well, as you are offloading the
  processing of the DB operations on to the CF server. You do pay a
  small price in moving the result sets from CF to Flex over a network
  if CF and Flex are on different machines.

  We fully support the change object model of writing Assemblers as
  ColdFusion Components. The one thing we do not support writing in
  CFML is the 'server push' API which allows a Java application running
  in the Flex web application to 'push' changes to the data in to the
  Flex managed result sets. We are currently evaluating supporting this
  in a future release.

  I hope this (biased) information helps.

[flexcoders] Trouble Getting Started

2006-07-06 Thread d_lnds
I am new to Flex and Coldfusion. I am trying to go through the
tutorials that come with Flex Builder 2 and cannot get any custom
components to work. Projects that have custom components defined in
them compile OK but I get a run-time error: Error #1009 Cannot access a
property or method of a null object reference...

It works OK when I open the .swf file but fails when the .swf is
embedded in an html wraper.

If anyone has some idea of what I am doing wrong I would really
apreciated hearing it.

[flexcoders] Re: ColdFusion vs. PHP as the back-end

2006-07-06 Thread Mike Potter
Just one point to clarify:
  AMFPHP only supports AMF0 while ColdFusion supports the newer AMF3
specification.

  For those interested, Ben Forta has a good discussion on the two
technologies here: http://www.forta.com/blog/index.cfm?mode=eentry=1265

Mike

--- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, JesterXL [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 First, you CAN pass ValueObjects via Java and PHP. Java via
OpenAMF, and PHP via AMFPHP. ColdFusion just now has the edge.

 Second, Remoting as we refer to it, allows you to:
 1. call back-end services like you'd call regular methods
 2. pass class objects instead of vanilla data (like Java POJO's), or
XML or URL params for simple string / value pairs. Strong typing for
server communication... pimp!
 3. allow better communication between you, the client developer, and
the back-end developer on what you are sending eachother
 4. pass the data in binary

 So, myCFC.doStuff ( somePersonVO );. If you are sending a Person
Class to some method, then the back-end guy knows exactly what you
are really sending him. Same when he says to you, Yeah, it'll return
a list of PersonVO's. That means, you'll get an array full of Person
ValueObject class instances. Finally, usually, binary AMF
communications is smaller than regular AJAX XML, WebService, and HTTP
posts.

 Dave Wolf from Cynergy systems will have contentions with that 4th
point, mainly because his tests with WebServices seems to have
renderered good results in 1.5. Flash Player 9, however, has greatly
improved upon AMF's size via AMF3 encoding, so it'd be good to hear if
he has any new tests.

 Subject: [flexcoders] ColdFusion vs. PHP as the back-end

 I started my quest to explore Flex rather recently; I never did much
with v1.5, mostly because the cost involved to launch any commercial
solution created with it. Now, with 2.0 it's pretty exciting to see
everything that is now, rather easily (and inexpensively!), possible
to do.

 But one thing I'm not quite clear on yet: what is the difference, or
benefit from, between basic remoting as is possible with
PHP/CF/ASP.NET, and the extended interaction with ColdFusion which
makes it possible to pass actual instances of Actionscript Classes
and have them map directly into a CFC Instances - and vice versa (a
quote from Tim Buntel's blog)?

 Thanks for any insights!

 Ville

[flexcoders] Working with CFC's

2006-07-06 Thread Bacardi Bryant

Hi,

Im a complete newbie to flex, but have been charged
with building a dashboard in flex. Our app. is ColdFusion and I would like to
do some simple stuff like output query results from cfc in dashboard.

Kinda following tutorial I wrote:

mx:Application
xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml

layout=absolute
fillColors=[#2b5e9b, #ff]
viewSourceURL=srcview/index.html

mx:HTTPService
id=feedRequest

 url="">

 useProxy=false
/

mx:Canvas
label=MyInfo width=100% height=100%
activate=feedRequest.send()

mx:DataGrid x=0
y=0 width=228 id=dgStories
dataProvider={feedRequest.lastResult.name}

height=338
editable=false enabled=true

However the result set is populated in the grid.

Is there something special that I should do? Can flex parse
a cfquery object, or should the cfc output xml?

Please help.

Thanks,

[flexcoders] How to properly subclass a component using mxml

2006-07-06 Thread hank williams

I want to create a subclass of DataGrid. So far what I have done is to create a new MXML component that is based on DataGrid.The problem is that if I try to use the new component as if it was a dataGrid, certain things dont work. For example:
myComp:BetterDataGrid mx:columns   mx:DataGridColumn headerText=Song Name dataField=label/   mx:DataGridColumn headerText=Artist dataField=label/
 /mx:columns/myComp:BetterDataGridin the above example, it doesnt like me using the columns construct to define the columns. In order to define columns in this way I need to put then in the actual BetterDataGrid component as opposed to in this instance. This makes it doggone hard to use BetterDataGrid as a generic better dataGrid since I cannot define its behavior on an instance by instance basis.
I am sure what I am doing wrong here is simple, but I dont know what.Any insight appreciated.Hank

Very cool. That all makes pretty much sense. I do have another

Commands to have a class that does one thing (and nothing else)?

[flexcoders] Flex 2 (production) Slowness

2006-07-06 Thread wlbagent
I have an application written in F2B3 that uses ColdFusion. I installed
Flex Builder 2 (production) and CF7.0.2. I recompiled the application
in FB 2. It compiles with no errors and runs on Flash Player 9 but it
runs significantly slower now then when on beta 3. No changes were
made to the Flex app or to the CFC's between the beta 3 and production
versions of Flex.

Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

RE: [flexcoders] Working with CFC's

2006-07-06 Thread Shannon Hicks

There's a better way to call the CFC that does the needed
conversions automatically... check out the source code for this (right-click,
and hit view source):

http://flex.work.iotashan.com/hlstatsx/hlstatsx.html

Specifically, look at the mx:RemoteObject
tag.

Hi,

Im a complete newbie to flex, but have been charged with

simple stuff like output query results from cfc in dashboard.

Kinda following tutorial I wrote:

mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml

viewSourceURL="srcview/index.html"

mx:HTTPService id="feedRequest"

url=""

useProxy="false" /

mx:Canvas label="MyInfo" width="100%" height="100%"
activate="feedRequest.send()"

mx:DataGrid x="0" y="0" width="228" id="dgStories"
dataProvider="{feedRequest.lastResult.name}
height="338" editable="false" enabled="true"

However the result set is populated in the grid.
Is there something special that I should do? Can flex parse a
cfquery object, or should the cfc output xml?

Please
help.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: WebService Cairngorm 2 Example

2006-07-06 Thread JesterXL
Naw. Commands aren't necessarely needing to be created that way. You
could, but for larger apps, you'd end up with a LOT of Commands. However,
it's not too tough to re-factor because if you coelecsed many Commands into
one, you'd really only need to change the Controller's addCommans function.

So, if you want to start that way, sure, go for it. For smaller projects,
it'll make it easier to identify what Command does what, and you won't have
to use custom responders in your Command's either if your Delegate only does
one thing.

For larger projects, however, you'll end up having many Commands doing
similiar things to similiar data; it's just easier to combine them in the
same class so related code is nearby for reference and/or sharing. Same
goes for Delegate's. A common strategy we've done is mapping our Delegate's
to CFC's; some of our CFC's, have say, 8 methods. 1 Delegate will have 8
public methods.

Very cool. That all makes pretty much sense. I do have another
question (shocking, huh?) about why you would have a single command
support multiple events/use multiple delegates. Isn't the point of
Commands to have a class that does one thing (and nothing else)?

Thanks again,
Ben

RE: [flexcoders] arrayCollection to custom value object

2006-07-06 Thread Peter Farland

This is controlled by CFQuery, so youd
either have to change the data format in CF before you return it, or continue
to do what youre doing on the client by copying each property across (although
Id use a for/in loop and [propName]-styled syntax against the currentUser type
rather than specifically writing a line to copy each item). You cant cast an
Object into another type unless it is literally of that type to begin with as

Hey Michael,In the problems pane, one of the top right buttons is for filters. You can filter out Flex issues all together there. Sorry, for the sarcasm earlier... I understand where you're coming from... it's just that some folks think that it's just as good to ignore the problem as to fix it. Those warnings are there for a reason

Maybe it was too much of a lob ball to resist ;-)

The only reason I was asking is because I am trying to fix someone else's
code and I think I know what the problem is. However the warnings are
causing my Flex Builder to run so S L O W L Y (extra emphasis on the
'slow') that I can't even run my app in debug. I bumped up the memory in
eclipse.ini, but the problem persists. I was hoping I could suppress the
warnings just to fix this problem.

Any thoughts or insight on the problem?

RE: [flexcoders] How to properly subclass a component using mxml

This is just a shot in the dark:

Does your subclass of DataGrid have any

I want to
create a subclass of DataGrid. So far what I have done is to create a new MXML
component that is based on DataGrid.

The problem is that if I try to use the new component as if it was a dataGrid,
certain things dont work. For example:

myComp:BetterDataGrid
 mx:columns
   mx:DataGridColumn
headerText=Song Name dataField=label/
   mx:DataGridColumn
headerText=Artist dataField=label/
 /mx:columns
/myComp:BetterDataGrid

in the above example, it doesnt like me using the columns construct to define
the columns. In order to define columns in this way I need to put then in the
actual BetterDataGrid component as opposed to in this instance. This makes it
doggone hard to use BetterDataGrid as a generic better dataGrid
since I cannot define its behavior on an instance by instance basis.

I am sure what I am doing wrong here is simple, but I dont know what.

Any insight appreciated.

Hank

Shouldnt you use RemoteObject instead of httpService?

If you want to use HTTPService you should invoke it as a

If youre using CFMX7 I would advise you to use

the result set is populated in the grid.

Is
there something special that I should do? Can flex parse a cfquery object, or
should the cfc output xml?

Please help.

[flexcoders] file.upload() set Content-Type?

2006-07-06 Thread Phil Marston
Hi All,

Now that I've got file upload working, does anyone know if it's possible
to set the Content-Type to anything but the default of
application/octet-stream? (Why Have Adobe done that?!)

I've been using a PHP script to put files into mySQL tables and I always
used to query the data in the POST for it's mime-type
 $fileType = $_FILES['fileData']['type'];
and then use it when I fetched the file from the table so that the
browser would know what to do with it - now I can't do that and all
files will be treated the same. :-(

Any ideas? (I'm guessing I'll just have to use the full filename to
guess the mimetype (e.g. if (*.jpg||*.jpeg)
{mime=image/jpeg}else{mime might be image/jpeg but who knows}) since
everything apart from Mac files don't have a creator property)

Cheers,

Phil

Re: [flexcoders] Flex release version: XML attribute string too long

Loading a XML file via mx:XML... source= is pretty much the same as having it inline - it is converted into an AS structure at compile time and that is where things go wrong.It is easy to show that it fails.
mx:XML id=test root test1 desc=this little piggy does work amp; / test2 desc=this little piggy does NOT work lt;ligt; for a list item at runtime /
  test3 desc=this little piggy does NOT even compile #13; / /root/mx:XMLIt works fine with loading the XML via HTTPService using the exact same XML - so I think it is a bug with the XML being converted at compile time. I think I remember there was a similar bug at the begining of time - like version

I want to
create a subclass of DataGrid. So far what I have done is to create a new MXML
component that is based on DataGrid.

The problem is that if I try to use the new component as if it was a dataGrid,
certain things dont work. For example:

myComp:BetterDataGrid
 mx:columns
   mx:DataGridColumn
headerText=Song Name dataField=label/
   mx:DataGridColumn
headerText=Artist dataField=label/

Hank

[flexcoders] Re: How to properly subclass a component using mxml

2006-07-06 Thread hank williams

One guess I have is that there are issues regarding using mxml to populate an *inherited* field. In this case columns is not a component, but a field which contains an Array of of
DataGridColumn
objects. But the error that flex gives indicates that it thinks columns is supposed to be a compoent because the error message is could not resolve mx:columns to a component implementation.
Is it just the fact that columns doesnt have a capital letter that should tell the compiler that this is a field and not a component? Should it just be looking first for fields first and then components?This seems like a relatively basic issue. Someone out there must know!?

I think since you are using a namespace
for the component you must also use it for the columns array:
