[flexcoders] repeater and swapChildAt

2008-06-16 Thread grimmwerks
Ok - if I've got 4 buttons being created in a repeater -- since
children of a component are referenced by that repeater id (ie

mx:Repeater id=rep
dataProvider={CircleData.getInstance().currentCircleArray}

mx:Button id=button /
/mx:Repeater

It'd be button[x] -- correct? ie the array of buttons.

Well if wanted to swap two buttons - would that kill their positioning
after that?

[flexcoders] Connection problem in Flex messaging

2008-06-16 Thread paromitadey
Hi,

We have used Flex messaging in an Flex/Java based application. The
messaging works fine in our production/QA server. But when we
deployed the application to the production server, which can be
accessed by a public IP, the messaging feature failed. Nevertheless,
if we connect the production server using a VPN connection and use
an internal IP to run the application, the messaging is working but
does not work when the same application is accessed using the public
IP.
We have used rtmp channel for messaging and we have opened the port
used in both the public IP as well as the internal IP.

channel-definition id=my-rtmp
class=mx.messaging.channels.RTMPChannel
endpoint uri=rtmp://{server.name}:2037
class=flex.messaging.endpoints.RTMPEndpoint/
properties
idle-timeout-minutes20/idle-timeout-minutes
/properties
/channel-definition

Still we have the same problem. We are unable to find the reason for
the dubious behavior.

Could anyone please help us to resolve this problem. What possibly
could be going wrong?

Thanks and Regards,
Paromita

[flexcoders] Flex web services client-BlazeDS-NetSuite, session cookies in header

2008-06-16 Thread celumbra
Has anyone built a flex client to NetSuite? I am searching for any notable
issues.

This combination seems like a natural fit for many companies, but,
surprisingly, there is a
dearth of information on the Internet. Maybe there are reasons that aren't
immediately
apparent?

From reading through the docs, it seems that managing the session cookies sent
with the
http headers in the login response is an issue, since they need to be returned
on each
subsequent request. Any others?

Any comments would be appreciated.

 I did try forcing it with this, with no success

 .errorTip

 .errortip just look like Tooltip and I can't get the errortip pointers to

 how can I reskin the default Tooltip while preserving error tips default

 - I have Flash Debug Player 9.0.124 installed
 - tracing from Flex does *not* go to the output panel with Firefox 3
 - tracing from Flex *does* go to the output panel with Safari

 I've heard that there are a few issues related to the 10.5.3 update

 Even though I knew I had the debug player installed by right-clicking, I
 went ahead and uninstalled and reinstalled.
 Again I confirmed that it is the debug player by right-clicking AND trace
 works when I switch the browser to Safari.
 But trace does not work when the browser is set to Firefox 3.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: string to actual actionscript code?

2008-06-16 Thread Scott Melby
Seems like you could just pass in an Array of strings to check against.
Something like the following

public function isImageLocationKnown(location:String,
knownLocations:Array):Boolean

{
   var ret:Boolean = false;

   for each(var knownLocation:String in knownLocations)
   {
  if(location == knownLocation)
  {
 ret = true;
 break;
  }
   }

   return ret;
}

Then call this method passing your image.location and your array of
things that you want to check against (which you can now build dynamically).

[flexcoders] Flex Newbie - Web Services Dilema

2008-06-16 Thread gnuwolf
Hi,

I'm a developer who usually uses Java,Php,C#, etc.

And I'm new to Flex and ActionScripting. i'm using Eclipse 3.3.x and
Flex Builder 3 plugin for Eclipse and BlazeDS.

I tried generating the proxy classes from Data Manage WSDL and I was
able to generate the *.as files which are the proxy classes.

Is there samples codes in MXML that utilizes the proxy classes? How do
I use the proxy-config.xml for this Flex application.

If you have sample app to share for me to jumpstart with it, i would
really appreacite it.

TIA.

[flexcoders] How the information pass from *List controls to their item renderers?

2008-06-16 Thread an0one
Here by saying *List and *ListData I mean the three standard ListBase
subclasses and their
corresponding BaseListData subclasses, i.e., List - ListData, DataGrid -
DataGridListData, Tree - TreeListData.

As I know, drop-in Item renderers in *List controls get the necessary
information from their
corresponding *ListData, so I guess there is some standard path this
information passes
from *List controls to their item renderers via the intermediate *ListData.

From the doc I find such correspondence:
  List.labelField - ListData.labelField
  DataGridColumn.dataField - DataGridListData.dataField

However I can not find such a correspondence between Tree and TreeListData
along the
lines. There is no labelField property in TreeListData and TreeListData is not
a subclass of
ListData as I guess(Tree is a subclass of List so it inherits the labelField
property).

Due to the lack of property correspondence between Tree and TreeListData, I
can't see what
this path is exactly.

[flexcoders] Flex Charts/DataProvider sum

2008-06-16 Thread romualdquantin
hi Eveyone,

I've got a dataprovider that I apply on a pie charts, it is working
but is there any way that I can automaticaly get a sum of the field I
display?

For example:

{client:client1, project:project1, time:2}
{client:client1, project:project1, time:2}
{client:client1, project:project2, time:2}
{client:client2, project:project4, time:2}
{client:client2, project:project4, time:2}
{client:client2, project:project5, time:2}

I always display the field time, the pie is showing me 6 parts, which
is probably normal.

Here is the thing, is there any way I could get the sum by client or
project without create actionscript code?

to get for example, filtered by client:
{client:client1, time:6}
{client:client2, time:6}
or filtered by project:
{project:project1, time:4}
{project:project4, time:4}

Any sumFilter that could take the filtered field and the field to sum?
or other property that could me?

The real dataprovider is a lot bigger than that, It would make me able
filter all this data without create an actionscript for every kind of
filter I want.

Any hints?

thanks

Romuald

[flexcoders] Typing into a Canvas paint program style and space key events

2008-06-16 Thread fkchang2000
Hi All:

  I'm trying to do a simple drawing program, something like
http://artpad.art.com/artpad/painter/, in which I primarily want to be
able to draw freehand lines and be able to add text. I want to
emulate the general text tool functionality where I click the text
tool icon, click on the canvas and start typing.

  I had tried the approach of addEventListener() for a key up event
which which I had a hard time of of getting focus (tried both the
application and the canvas), but when I did get focus, I discovered
that that the space button activates a button click of the last
selected button. A google search shows someone else discovered this
accessibility feature.

   Is there a different route than the addEventListener() for key up
events that I should be taking to get this sort of behavior?

  Thanks

HTTPRequest uses URLLoader.

From the user point of view HTTPRequest is more XML oriented and
URLLoader is more suitable for the binary stuff.

[flexcoders] Flex builder compiler line

2008-06-16 Thread jamalwally
Is there a way to see the compiler command that Flex builder 3 uses?
For example, in Builder 3, under Properties - Flex Compiler, you can
choose several compiler options. I guess that Builder generates a
list of compiler options from this gui. I'd like to see the final
arguments that are sent to the compiler.

I'd like to begin compiling my swfs from the command line using mxmlc,
and I would like to use the same compiler options from the command
line that the builder is generating from the GUI options.

For example, I am using Flex 2.0.1 Hotfix 3 (see the Use a specific
SDK drop-down menu item in the Flex Compiler options) and would like
to see the equivalent compiler command line option.

Thanks in advance,

Focus Event on this ItemRenderer my code is as follows:

mx:VBox xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml; mouseFocusEnabled=true
focusEnabled=true mouseEnabled=true
mouseFocusChange=onMouseFocusChange(event)

The onMouseFocusChangeEvent is never fired. I also tried adding an

How can I do this?

Any help much appreciated.

the compiler comes with the SDK, you would not send that argument to the

[flexcoders] Loading swf..

2008-06-16 Thread Manu Dhanda

Hii guyz,

It's not an issue here, but I need someone's help to point me to the right
tutorial where I can learn about loading swf.

Also, the trick is that i have one introductory swf with user's making a few
choices/selections from combobox's.
Now, on some button click, I want to present my second swf, having results
from the choices made by users.

Also, as my second swf is bit bigger in size, I want it to load in the
background, while users are still busy with first swf.

Can anyone guide me please.. to the right source of information. And about
my needs, like what is possible and what is not, in the way I need it to be.

Thanks,
Manu.

Re: [flexcoders] Custom TreeItemRenderer not rendering children

When I do that, the data displays fine. For example, suppose I use the
following as my data provider:

mx:XMLList id=treeData
node label=Random things
node label=Dice
node label=8-sided/
node label=20-sided/
/node
node label=Coins/
/node
/mx:XMLList

If I create a normal mx:Tree without any custom things going on...

mx:Tree dataProvider={treeData} labelField=@label width=100%
height=100%/

...the data shows up perfectly. When I use the custom itemRenderer...

mx:Tree dataProvider={treeData} itemRenderer=InlineColorPicker
width=100% height=100%/

(where InlineColorPicker refers to the itemRenderer I mentioned in my first
email)...only Random Things appears, albeit with the color picker next to it.
If showRoot=false, then only Dice and Coins appear, both with color pickers.

When drawing the mx:Tree with the custom item renderer, I removed the
labelField attribute because the label is explicitly defined in the
InlineColorPicker class.

I have a custom item renderer for an mx:Tree, shown
here:

mx:HBox xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe. com/2006/ mxml
mx:Script
[Bindable]
public var selectedColor: Number;
/mx:Script
mx:Binding source=cp.selected Color destination= selectedColor /
mx:ColorPicker id=cp selectedColor= 0xFF /
mx:Label text={data. @label}/
/mx:HBox

It is supposed to display a color picker next to the label of the node.

However, when I display an instance of an mx:Tree which uses this item
renderer, only the root appears (or, if showRoot=false, only the
first-depth children) although the data contains second- and
third-depth children.

I have tried to resolve the issue, but to no avail. Why aren't all the
nodes appearing? Thanks in advance!

[flexcoders] 'Pointer' in actionscript?

2008-06-16 Thread fb6668
Hi.
I have a custom component which uses data from my modellocator.
Depending on the way this component is called depends where abouts
this data comes from,

ie:

private var _itemLocation:Object;
[Bindable]
protected function get itemLocation():Object
{
if(isAssets)
_itemLocation = model.factfind.assets;
else
_itemLocation = model.factfind.liabilities;

return _itemLocation;
}

protected function set itemLocation(value:Object):void
{
_itemLocation = value;
}

model.factfind.assets and model.factfind.liabilities are both
ArrayCollections.

then, later on, I have

mx:Label text={itemLocation.selectedAssets.getItemAt(0).name}/

Now, this doesn't update as I'd expect when the first item in
itemLocation.selectedAssets changes (whatever itemLocation refers to)

If I change it to
mx:Label
text={model.factfind.assets.selectedAssets.getItemAt(0).name}/
it works perfectly.

So it seems that when I do the set/get on itemLocation, it copies the
value of model.factfind.assets/liabilities rather than acting as a
pointer to that.

How do I get it to work like a pointer so when model.factfind.assets
changes, so does itemLocation, in order that I can use the same
component for both assets and liabilities?

Thanks

RE: [flexcoders] Connection problem in Flex messaging

2008-06-16 Thread Seth Hodgson
Hi,

RTMP is run on a non-standard (meaning, non-HTTP) port so client-side
firewalls/proxies/etc. may block traffic out on that port. Accessing your
server over VPN versus over the public internet must be using different
port-specific rules.

You'll generally want to define your ChannelSet (or the list of channels in
your server config), to start with RTMP as the preferred option but then
fallback to one of the AMF HTTP options (streaming, long-polling, simple
polling). These fallback channels/endpoints should be configured to use port 80
if insecure or 443 is secure to guarantee that their traffic makes it through
the network without being blocked due to port number.

IP.
We have used rtmp channel for messaging and we have opened the port
used in both the public IP as well as the internal IP.

channel-definition id=my-rtmp
class=mx.messaging.channels.RTMPChannel
endpoint uri=rtmp://{server.name}:2037
class=flex.messaging.endpoints.RTMPEndpoint/
properties
idle-timeout-minutes20/idle-timeout-minutes

Still we have the same problem. We are unable to find the reason for
the dubious behavior.

Could anyone please help us to resolve this problem. What possibly
could be going wrong?

RE: [flexcoders] [BlazdeDS] setting concurrency property through actionAcript

2008-06-16 Thread Seth Hodgson
Hi Levancho,

This option is very old, dating back to the earliest versions of RemoteObject
client code and it may not do what you're expecting it to do. The documentation
here isn't very clear (although it's not a simple topic so maybe that's why).
When you set this to last, you're telling your RemoteObject instance to
ignore results/faults that return to the player for any earlier calls you've
issued before the currently final call, but this doesn't have any effect at the
network level. What this means is that if you make multiple calls quickly like
so:

ro.foo();
ro.bar();

Both calls will be sent to the server but the result/fault for foo() will
return to the player and the RemoteObject will just discard it rather than
dispatching a result or fault event to your handler code. The result/fault for
the second call to bar() (the last call you've made) will be dispatched.

So this option doesn't cancel out the call at the network level. That's not
even possible. Once a request is put on the network, there's no way to cancel
it apart from waiting for its result/fault to dispatch in the player, and if
the call succeeded, meaning you get a result rather than a fault, you'll need
to make an explicit compensating/rollback call to undo or cancel what you've
just done.

So you'd have:
...
fooToken = ro.foo();

... oh no, I want to cancel or undo foo.. set a custom flag on my token to
control how I handle the eventual result/fault ...
fooToken[undo] = true;

... within my result handler, check for this custom flag I added to the
AsyncToken for my call...
if (token[undo])
ro.undoFoo(); // Make a call to rollback whatever foo() did, and don't
bother processing the result.
else
processResult(result);

... otherwise, in my fault handler...
if (!token[undo])
processFault(fault);

* Just to be clear, that's psuedocode to just illustrate the idea.

If you're happy with the player just not dispatching the results/faults it's
receiving for earlier calls to your handler code (they're still all being
processed at the server), feel free to log an enhancement to get the
'concurrency' property supported on non-MXML RemoteObject. I'm not sure why it
was only implemented for the MXML version.

Hope that helps,
Seth

it says you can You can set the concurrency property on a RemoteObject

but I don't use method tag, does that mean I cant set concurrency to be last ?
how can I tell my remoteCall to use concurrency =last?

I use following code to invoke remote Object :

var token:AsyncToken = roService.getQuickPickList(12345);

token.addResponder(new AsyncResponder(
function(data:Object, token:Object):void {

basicaly I want to make sure every subsequent request cancel out any existing
request currently running .looks like that concurrency property will do just
that, but I cant seem to find where I can set that

[flexcoders] Re: Some Characters on Dynamically Loaded Fonts Show Incorrectly

2008-06-16 Thread aaalzee
After days if trying to figure this out I figured out the following
and it works, so I believe this could help your problem..

Problem:
How to get Dynamically Loaded Embedded Font Swfs from a Stylesheet to
display correctly when using it in a Flex TextArea component that is
reading Multi-Formatted HTML Text?

Solution:
Step 1: Create a swf file for each Font you want, with a text sample
of the Font on stage and whatever characters embedded.
Step 2: Add the fonts as a font-face in a .css StyleSheet, which can
be loaded dynamically in the Flex application.
Step 3: Create a style name containing all the fonts needed , for
example:

.subPageFontStyles
{
  font-family: Bello Pro;
  font-size: 28px;
  color: #7E1A7B;

  font-family: Arial Rounded MT Bold;
  font-size: 15px;
  color: #302F00;
}

Step 4: In the TextArea Flex component, set styleName to the font
style name in the StyleSheet, for example subPageFontStyles.
Step 5: In the HTML Text File, for each text block set the font
face tag to font-family specified in the style name from the .css
Stylesheet, for example Bello Pro.

Notes:
-You have the option to change font size and color tags in the HTML
Text.
-Make sure to use the HTML Text property of the Text Area Flex
component to set the HTML Text.
-Make sure to recompile the .css Stylesheet file into a .swf file if
it is being loaded dynamically.

  Incorrectly

  I'm having an issue with dynamically loaded fonts not showing up
  correctly. The fonts are loaded using
  StyleManager.loadStyleDeclarations(fonts.swf, true).  As you
can see
  on the attached image, some characters do not render correctly.
In
 the
  image, the top is Verdana and the bottom is Arial. Both fonts
have
  problems with some characters.

  The displayed text is from a TextArea with an htmlText

  LEADING='2'P ALIGN='LEFT'FONT FACE='Verdana' SIZE='127'
  COLOR='#00' LETTERSPACING='0' KERNING='0'The quick brown fox
 jumps

  Anyone have any thoughts as to what might be causing this or what
 could
  be done to resolve the issue?

[flexcoders] Flex Solution for Dynamic Embedded Font Swfs in Multi-Formatted HTML Text

2008-06-16 Thread aaalzee

{
  font-family: Bello Pro;
  font-size: 28px;
  color: #7E1A7B;

  font-family: Arial Rounded MT Bold;
  font-size: 15px;
  color: #302F00;
}

RE: [flexcoders] 'Pointer' in actionscript?

2008-06-16 Thread Gordon Smith
I'm having trouble following this because I don't understand why your
getter for itemLocation doesn't return what the setter set.

But, setting that aside, I suspect your binding problem is because your
setter isn't dispatching a binding event.

Subject: [flexcoders] 'Pointer' in actionscript?

Hi.
I have a custom component which uses data from my modellocator.
Depending on the way this component is called depends where abouts
this data comes from,

ie:

private var _itemLocation:Object;
[Bindable]
protected function get itemLocation():Object
{
if(isAssets)
_itemLocation = model.factfind.assets;
else
_itemLocation = model.factfind.liabilities;

return _itemLocation;
}

protected function set itemLocation(value:Object):void
{
_itemLocation = value;
}

model.factfind.assets and model.factfind.liabilities are both
ArrayCollections.

then, later on, I have

mx:Label text={itemLocation.selectedAssets.getItemAt(0).name}/

Now, this doesn't update as I'd expect when the first item in
itemLocation.selectedAssets changes (whatever itemLocation refers to)

If I change it to
mx:Label
text={model.factfind.assets.selectedAssets.getItemAt(0).name}/
it works perfectly.

Thanks

You may want to try some combination of the following:

1) Do the setting in the setter tather than the getter
2) Type itemLocation as ArrayCollection rather than Object
3) Use BindingUtils to set up a binding as shown in this example

I was beginning to think of something along the same lines, by flag I
assume you mean something like a boolean variable going from true to
false depending on what happened? Also, about the COLLECTION_CHANGE
event dispatching, it really doesn't matter since I need the new

if itemUpdated works better then I'll give that a shot. Again, thanks

[flexcoders] custom map image geocoding service?

2008-06-16 Thread Rich Rodecker
I'm building a flash app which requires some mapping functionality. It's
relatively simple, so I'm not sure that it needs all the bells and whistles
that come with using google's or yahoo's map services. Basically we have a
static U.S./Canada map image (no pan or zoom) that has some interactive
markers overlaid on it...pretty much a heatmap I guess. We're already set
up with receiving the latitude and longitude coordinates, now i just need to
translate that into x,y positions on the map. I know there are services out
there that handle this, but I've been searching for a while and most of the
results reference back to google or yahoo maps, so I'm thinking I'm not
suing the right search terms. Does anyone know where I can get this
done...or any other tips/advice that might help?

Here by saying *List and *ListData I mean the three standard ListBase
subclasses and their
corresponding BaseListData subclasses, i.e., List - ListData, DataGrid -
DataGridListData, Tree - TreeListData.

As I know, drop-in Item renderers in *List controls get the necessary
information from their
corresponding *ListData, so I guess there is some standard path this
information passes
from *List controls to their item renderers via the intermediate *ListData.

From the doc I find such correspondence:
List..labelField - ListData.labelField
DataGridColumn. dataField - DataGridListData. dataField

RE: [flexcoders] Connection problem in Flex messaging

2008-06-16 Thread Seth Hodgson
Right, Anatole makes a good point. Using this technique you can expose your
RTMP endpoint on port 80 alongside your HTTP endpoint also on port 80, on the
same server:

www.mycompany.com:80 - for HTTP traffic
rtmp.mycompany.com:80 - for RTMP traffic

You can achieve this by using the bind-address and bind-port config
settings for your RTMP endpoint. You could either use two NICs (hence two IPs)
on the same physical machine, and use one for your RTMP endpoint and the other
for your HTTP endpoint. Or, if you have a load balancer that supports virtual
IPs, you could define these client-facing IPs there, and then route the RTMP
and HTTP traffic for them back to the proper endpoints on your LCDS server.

Running RTMP over the standard HTTP port 80 is an end-run around the port being
blocked by something along the network path between the client and server, but
stateful HTTP proxies that do packet inspection will still drop RTMP packets
(because they don't look like HTTP). So with this in place, a higher percentage
of blocked clients will be able to successfully connect via RTMP, but you'll
still want an AMF channel as a fallback for any that are still blocked.

Best,
Seth

[flexcoders] Keeping the MXML clean

2008-06-16 Thread Richard Rodseth
I have a couple of chart series with dataFunctions that get updated
dynamically. Some of these are shared between more than one chart.
I wish to avoid large Script blocks with duplicate code. Here are some
possibilities I've considered

1) A SeriesHelper class with a reference to the series and any other
objects needed. Has some creation order issues, as the chart definition
can't refer to helper.dataFunction1 if I only create the helper at
creationComplete time. I suppose I could use binding or reverse the order
and set the series reference at creationComplete time.

2) Script tag that includes an .as file.

3) Duplicate one line functions in the MXML file, that called shared static
utility functions

Thoughts?

[flexcoders] Advanced custom components in Flex Builder 3

2008-06-16 Thread sbyrne_dorado
Hi all. I'm trying to determine if any of the following are possible
in design mode in Flex Builder 3:

   * have new custom components appear in a category other than Custom
   * if there are multiple custom components with the same name but
appear in different packages, cause only one package's version to be
displayed
   * supplant any or all of the built-in components with replacements
of my choosing

Has anyone done this? Is it even possible? I have a very large
library of custom components, and having them all fall into the Custom
category makes it darn near impossible for a user to find what they want.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is an area where the docs
(that I can find anyway) are not very detailed.

Gordon,

I can live without eval() and associated evilness, but I'd sell my left
testicle for the ability to mark a Proxy as extending or implementing
various classes or interfaces.

Mario - As for this sort of pseudo-eval that theyou're after, you could
definitely cook up something similar to that without *too much* work, but I
don't think it's the correct solution to whatever the actual root problem
is. We need more information as to context to be more help :)

 They answer u about eval() cause that was what eval() was for. I used it so
 often in AS1 and AS2. Lost now in AS3 without it :(

[flexcoders] Re: Move and Resize effect on panel

2008-06-16 Thread Tim Hoff

Hi Steve,

Would usually use state transitions for this, with a shorter duration,
but the code below works the same way. Effects are smoothest when you
set the from and to values. Not as smooth if you are applying an effect
on a component that is percentage size based. For these, change
something else that has a fixed size, and let the framework do the work
for you. So, instead of applying the effects to panelRight, perform
them on middlePanel.

[flexcoders] Can't remove small non-transparent rectangle in full screen mode

2008-06-16 Thread eugenemed
Hi all,

I'm trying to mimic Expose-style functionality in an AIR app I'm
developing -- when the user presses a shortcut key, all of the open
tabs in the application should become visible in a full-screen,
translucent overlay window. (E.g. like:
http://www.rogergordon.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/expose.png)

After creating a window, I set the following properties:
layout = absolute;
setStyle(backgroundAlpha, 0.5);
width = Screen.mainScreen.bounds.width;
height = Screen.mainScreen.bounds.height;
showGripper = false;
showStatusBar = false;
showTitleBar = false;
systemChrome = NativeWindowSystemChrome.NONE;
transparent = true;

When I finally set

stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN_INTERACTIVE;

things work as expected, except there is a small (about 10x10 pixels)
non-transparent background-colored square right in the middle of the
screen/window. I can't figure out a way to remove it (at this point,
no children have been added to the window yet).

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions!

either unsubscribed or stopped looking in this mess greatly diminishing the

Further delay of breaking this group hinders usefulness of the group for all

What about best practices in Flex UI coding? Where do those posts go?

And who decides what posts go in the advanced lists, and what go in the

I'm not suggesting we don't split the list at all, just that we put some
serious thought into it first. Definitions of what belongs in what group,
and a lot of publicly available information to help people locate the best
list for their question. Maybe have some sort of community vote or
something; we don't want to fracture the community, there's not *that* many

Re: [flexcoders] Splitting FlexCoders in smaller, focused groups

2008-06-16 Thread Anatole Tartakovsky
Josh, It is definitely up to flexcoders as a group to make these decision
- not me for sure.
   I did suggest separate group on best practices and I do not think you
can separate UI best practices in Front-end tool - but I might assume much.

Enterprise in Flex is reasonably well defined - anything that is based on
commercial LCDS + typical tasks for enterprises - portals integration, large
team management, scalability, and whatever else. Basically people usually
know if they are working in enterprise and would use their judgement.

The same goes for 101 - people often know if they are within the first 6
month. 101 presumes that there is FAQ thread somewhere, and hopefully WiKi
with repeated questions. It also gives Adobe better idea what new developers
have problem with and they can make product more intuitive for new
developers.

As far as scaring people - my post clearly states that at this point new
developers scare experienced ones instead of letting people work together.
With smaller groups it is possible to get moderators. Take a look at weborb,
every message you send gets to developers blackberry, but quite a few are
answered by experienced developers that are in that group for quite some
time. With smaller groups and defined target audience you can provide better
targeted answers that would suite that community better.

As far as better inbox management - I would love to hear about something
that works - but I have not seen anything that would do 10 way split for me.

Re: [flexcoders] Splitting FlexCoders in smaller, focused groups

2008-06-16 Thread Daniel Freiman
This issue gets brought up periodically (and once by me), and at those times
the mods have convinced me that we shouldn't (or at minimum had an argument
against that was as good as the argument for). However, at this point in
time, I think you have a point. In the past, I've answered more questions
than I do now. Some of that is because I have been busy at work, and some
of that is because a variety of reasons that are probably related to the
group size.

But I think splitting up the groups by user experience or complexity is a
bad idea. For every new user at whom I just want to scream Read the docs!
there are many who simply need a push in the right direction or have found a
bug/idiosyncrasy in flex that they have no hope of figuring out unless they
have someone with a little more experience telling them that they aren't
going crazy. And we want those novices on the same list as the veterans.
If a significant portion of the knowledgeable user base flees from the
newbees, those new adopters won't have as good a chance of having their
answers solved and the growth and quality of the community will be harmed.
(I'm not saying it will take a nose dive or anything, but it won't be as
good as it could be.) I think I could make a similar arguement for people
who might be making the jump between intermediate to veteran, or business
class, to enterprise class. (I know right now I'm on the border between
business and enterprise class.)

I agree that we should have some different lists differentiated on content.
Key word there being 'some.' The more we divide, the more our knowledge is
divided.  Let's not go overboard.

But I think with the release of BlazeDS, remoting now has enough traffic to
get it's own group and we could define a clear set of content that would be
in that group. A third group (or actually a forth group after flexcoders,
flexcomponents, and remoting) might be useful, but I wouldn't endorse the
idea unless someone else can suggest a good idea of what would go in that
space that would be clearly differentiated by content, and allow users of
all skill levels to join.

 Flex community site to go with each group - providing best posts in more
 systematic way.

 I suggest the following Yahoo groups ( created couple for your
 convenience).

 Have you seen degrafa?
 You can do all this via CSS.

  Hi,

  Well.. you can't really unless you create a custom skin. There are
 some open
  source stuff out there that allows you to use a background repeat
 algorithm.

  There is no background position styles either.

  So really, what you want to do cannot be done with Flex3 css.

 And then How can I set the page's background like in the HTML Css?
   That is:
   background-repeat: repeat-x;
   background-Position X: left;
   background-Position Y: bottom;

No, you can't do this.

Flex CSS is not 'real' css and does not conform to WC3.

2008-06-16 Thread Bjorn Schultheiss
When I get lost I start removing code until i can get a working build.
Provided you can you adl to debug other apps this approach should help.

 Is there anyway to debug something like this? I have traced the
issue to a
 semi-specific area of my code, but when it crashes I can't use any
of the
 debug stuff to get a closer look at the problem.

[flexcoders] Re: Splitting FlexCoders in smaller, focused groups

2008-06-16 Thread Tim Hoff

Hi Anotole,

This topic has been brought up several times since this list was
established. At times, it does seem that the post topics are very
diverse. However, with the clear exception of flexcomponents, the
suggestion to split the list into sub groups has been consistantly
avoided; to reduce the number of feeds that the primary responders to
the list have to monitor. It would be near impossible for the Adobe
experts, and others on this list, to regulary respond to the wide
variety of posts that are made if they had to watch 12 different lists.
Agreed, like RSS feeds, the inbox gets full rather quickly. Just using
the Yahoo interface, to scan messages, works great and doesn't take up
much time at all though. And yes, there are frequent questions by
people that are new to flex. I look at helping people that are just
starting as paying it forward. The mix on this list is diverse, but
people can always go to the Adobe Flex forums; if they want more
specialized focus. I don't want to sound like I'm not agreeing with
your proposal; it has merit. However, it would probably splinter the
group too much. If anything, I think the quality and focus would be
improved if people tried to limit the posts/responses to Flex related
issues. That would probably reduce the inbox clutter by 1/3. :-)

[flexcoders] Automating the compiling of actionscript projects in Flex Buider 3

2008-06-16 Thread brett.coffin
I am currently creating some actionscript projects in flex builder 3.
The idea is to create some basic templates (10 or so different look
and feel) with picture and text holders but no text or pictures.

Then pass to the selected actionscript project template the picture
and text reference to embed via an xml file and publish the swf.

I would like to automate that process can anyone point me in the right
direction ?

I would like to be able to pass commands to flex builder to open a
specific actionscript project, pass it the ref to a xml file and
compile to get my swf...

Any help would be appreciated

Regards Brett
