I recall that it can be done using the bytearray but I am not sure if  
that code was made public.

Excel's native format is not readable by flex.  Save the Excel workbook
as XML and then you could load it using HTTPService.

 

Normally you cannot access anything on the local client.  Since you say
you have used HTTPService to do this, I will assume you are using one of
the workarounds.
