experience using SB live!24bit - it also refuses to run with ASIO under Preview

Eric, Boband others,

first of all thanks for the very promising new features in the
new release. Thanks for growing up the incorporated test facilities! I love
these BITEfeatures ...

I can confirm and enforce the statement from Mike:

1) TX by PTT runs one time. Recovery to RX causes failure
message. Playing with MON/MOX brings up the RX again. PTT then no longer
operative. TX with MOX possible but unstable. Recovery from TUN to RX not
possible except through shutdown to stby.

2) Switching from PANADAPTER to SPEC and back to any MODE shows
a display similar to TX (I assumeit's the SPECTRUM display narrowed down
to the PANADAPTER span)

3) Importing the database from 1.4.5. rel.1 causes the same
problems with frequencies below 3.775 MHz than before.

4) DSP buffer size is greyed out

All observations made with both desktop and laptop.

Did you plug in the frequency in the Level Calibration area? This is
something new with this version. You have to plug in the frequency of

 Subject: [Flexradio] Preview 2 RE-Observations - LONG!

First, importing the database from the first preview didn't work at
all so
 I
re-calibrated everything making a new database.
Well, one thing I found was related to the vox feature.
the big culprit for me was the NOISE GATE. It was checked and the
 threshold
was 3db. As soon as I unchecked this the software started to work. I
was
 able
to use the 256 buffers on everything.

[Eric Wachsmann] We are aware of an issue related to VOX and have a fix
in place for the next version. We are currently working on the database
issue.

--snip--
Can some one tell me where this awful beep sound comes from?
this has to be the ugliest beep I have ever heard and why it makes
these
 weird
noises when for example - resizing the setup window is done.

[Eric Wachsmann] The beeping was caused by some nastiness that we had
introduced inside the 4 port callback in audio.cs. We have made an
effort to optimize the callback and have eliminated the buzz saw
effect at least on our computers. This will require more testing in
Preview 3.

Although the equalizers are nice to have, I don't think its really
 necessary
BUT if these items are going to be part of the software, why not
include
 some
buttons for high and low audio filters on the front panel it needs to
be
cluttered more I guess :). Just my 2 cents worth on this.

[Eric Wachsmann] I'm not sure I understand what you mean. You are right
that we don't currently have an easy way to save the RX EQ in a profile
like we do on the TX side. That is something that I'm sure we will be
addressing as we go forward.

One problem with the new software is the frequency calibration. For
some
reason I got an error that told me something like the calibration was
out
 of spec.

[Eric Wachsmann] Sounds like a bug in the algorithm. I'll take a look
at this.

I have TWO requests for the authors of the software, one, an internal
 voice
keyer, two, PLEASE document for us users all the little adjustments
that
 can
be made in the setup tab. We now have a setup tab that has sub setup
tabs.
These adjustments are available to us but to be honest I cant tell you
 what
some of them do and what the effects would be if we change something.
Some
are very noticeable some I would guess are not. Please complie the
information on this stuff so someone like myself can make the decision
to
make tor not make adjustments to this radio.

[Eric Wachsmann] The voice keyer is on the list of requests. The
documentation keeps up with the official releases. We simply cannot
keep up with the pace of the Beta versions in the operation manual.
Watch the release notes and the reflector for instructions on new things
as they come out in the Beta versions.

Also last item, finally, I was having problems getting N1MM to talk to
the
 SDR
software. So I loaded portmon and started watching what was going on
as
things were turned on, started etc. What I found was this, I would
do
 just
like I did above I would double click the SDR icon BUT not turn the
 software
ON, from here I started the N1MM logging program, then I went back
to
 the
SDR software and went from standby to on. This worked for me.
I would suggest anyone having a similar problem with any program
talking
 to
the SDR software to try this. This did solve the problem I was having
with
N1MM and I used it through out the contest with no lost connection
 problems.

[Eric Wachsmann] Our VAC guide will be expanded to cover several more
digital mode / logging programs in the next several weeks. Stay tuned
as what you are looking for will likely be in there. I have heard it
through the grapevine that another manual specifically for getting the
PowerSDR to work with N1MM may be available soon.

Just want to pass this on to Eric and everyone else who has
contributed to
 the
software, NICE JOB GUYS!!! Keep up the excellent work!

Thanks Stan. We're having fun. Things will continue to improve as we
iron out these bugs.

It might be best that the software be sent out with nothing activated.
 Please
leave the features activation to the end user if possible.

[Eric] I completely agree. If one of the features is turned on by
default, this is simply an oversight. I'll check VOX, Noise Gate, EQ,
etc. Let me know if you find anything else like that.

I didnt get any reports of it going out on the air so it must only
show up
 when the MON is activated.

[Eric] It likely would go out over the air, but you typically don't mess
with controls while talking, so that probably was a saving grace there.
This is already fixed internally. Nasty bug.

I recorded a wave file and noticed the file size was HUGE!!! This was
 only
after a min or two of recording, is there a pre determined size for a
specific time? Like 100meg per min?

[Eric] Sure. We're recording an uncompressed wave file in PCM format.
This means that if you ignore the header (which is roughly 32 bytes),
the wave file will be:

2 Channels x 48000 samples per second x 4 bytes per sample x num seconds
= z bytes.

So for a minute, this would be 2 x 48000 x 4 x 60 = 23,040,000 bytes or
roughly 22MB/min.

I was just suggesting a button on the front panel for audio filters
for
 high
and low cut. or something like that. A drop down with choices for
these
things would be a nice feature.

[Eric] I think the Variable filters are what we intend the users to use
for this type of feature unless I'm really missing the boat here.

--snip--
There are items in the setup that I have no ideas what they do and
what
 the
efects of changing these things would do.

These things might be best found in say an appendix at the end of the
 OPERATING Manual.

 Maybe an adjustment section?? :)

[Eric] Have you looked at the Control Descriptions section of the
manual? This is exactly the intent of that chapter. If the
descriptions of the controls are inadequate to properly describe the
operation, please let me know which ones are confusing and we'll do our
best to make them more clear.

One issue which I cant resolve is getting the SDR to key my linear.

I followed the instructions and still had to use the foot switch.

Can you be more specific as to how to set this up?

I must be missing something as this just doesnt seem to be that
 complicated.

I made up a cable and plug for the SDR and my linear - then what
What do I do next? Not sure what to do next except plug it in to the
respective places. Is this all I need to do?

[Eric] The hookup going to the X2 port pin 7 should be all of the
hardware necessary to key a linear PA. Make sure that you have the X2
TR Sequencing enabled in the software. The pin will not be TR sequenced
otherwise.

Eric,

I have exactly the same problem. I have a fully configured SDR1000 with RFE,
PA, ATU and USB interface. My sound card is currently the Santa Cruz. I have
a D44 but held off the change over till after the contest. I will see what
happens with the D44.

Although I saw that the ATU code has been changed, my ATU is still not
properly tuning. I am also still getting the ATU communications error during
full tuning. I will try the parallel cable again.

I have attempted with both the previous version and this new version to have
the DXlab's Winwarbler program key CW via a virtual serial port connection.
It has been unsuccessful. Has anyone been successful with Winwarbler?

The PowerSDR Beta v1.4.5 Preview 2 is not usable with my current
configuration.

The previous version worked very well during the contest although I did lose
the rig control virtual serial port connection a few times and had to
shutdown PowerSDR and restart to regain my virtual serial connection with
Dxlab's Commander.

[Flexradio] preview 2 wave tx

I've been running prev 2 since Friday. Very cool. I imported the data
without any problems. Everything (popping rx, cycling tx amp, etc) cured
itself after a couple minutes running, spooky.

I'm surprised no one's said anything about the waveform recorder. There
is currently a bug that removes the ':' from the directory path.

I fixed the problem by moving the fname = path + fname to the end of the
method. I'm still not sure that the wave file transmits OK. What options
should I use to record just the rx audio and tx the same. It seams that once I
was sending all 22 KHz of spectrum and some aliases.

It took me a while to find the UTC clock. :0

So for a minute, this would be 2 x 48000 x 4 x 60 = 23,040,000 bytes or
roughly 22MB/min.

[Eric] Have you looked at the Control Descriptions section of the

descriptions of the controls are inadequate to properly describe the

The pin will not be TR sequenced
otherwise.

Willi,

The High setting on the preamp is the new default because with the
latest hardware, this is where you would typically operate. After you
install the latest mods, the High setting will give the best compromise
between dynamic range and MDS (from what I understand).

It might be best that the software be sent out with nothing
activated.
  Please
leave the features activation to the end user if possible.

I didnt get any reports of it going out on the air so it must only
  show up
  when the MON is activated.

[Eric] It likely would go out over the air, but you typically don't
mess
with controls while talking, so that probably was a saving grace
there.
This is already fixed internally. Nasty bug.

I recorded a wave file and noticed the file size was HUGE!!! This
was

after a min or two of recording, is there a pre determined size for
a

[Eric] Sure. We're recording an uncompressed wave file in PCM
format.
This means that if you ignore the header (which is roughly 32
bytes),
  the wave file will be:

  2 Channels x 48000 samples per second x 4 bytes per sample x num

Re: [Flexradio] E/Q Bug?

2005-10-31 Thread Eric Wachsmann - FlexRadio

The EQ thing was definitely a bug and has
been fixed for the next version. As far
as having VOX and TX/TX EQ controls on the front panel, Id love to be
able to offer that today. Right now it
is a matter of real estate on the front panel.
We have just flat run out of space given our current design. We are in the process of a complete software
architecture reorganization that should allow us a greater deal of freedom with
front panel controls.

Hi Eric, I really lovemy SDR1000. Every timeI
get a new software release, it is like going to the Dayton Hamvention (have
been over 45 times) and getting a new radio! Great work by all your software
guys.

I very much like the receiver E/Q and the transmitter E/Q. I
have found a problem thatI have but maybeno one else has and that
is, even though I left the E/Q's on,when I X out of the
console and then start up the program, the E/Q'sare not on even though
the check is in the box after reopening. The only way I can
get the E/Q's on, is to move any slider on the receiver E/Q and the transmitter
E/Q.

As a future change, could you puta on/off button
(checkbox)of the VOXand TR E/Q's on the Power SDR
console?

Thanks fora great radio.

[Flexradio] Preview 2 and VAC

2005-10-31 Thread Joe - AB1DO

Hi all,

I was fortunate enough to have had none of the
problems reported by others. I imported my database from preview 1. Doing so,
did immediately pop up an error message about something regarding indices, etc
none of which I understood, so I did all I could do which was click on OK,
which made the message go away and everything worked from then on. I did
initially have the loud buzzing noise mentioned elsewhere, but that disappeared
once I ran through the calibration and image reduction routines.

I quickly installed VAC and set it up per the
instructions in the manual - it works a charm. However, haviing done this, I
subsequently went to transmit SSB. Nothing happened: blank panadapter and no
audio on the monitor. But at one point I heard a female voice saying "trial"! Go
figure. Listening longer, while still in tx, this voice kept repeating itself.
It had me stumped for a while until it occurred to me that having VAC enabled
might interfere with voice transmission - VAC was the only trial software I had.
Sure enough, disabling VAC in Setup solved the issue.

I rechecked the VAC manual, but unless I overlooked
it, I found no mention of the fact that it needed to be disabled in setup for
voice transmissions. Just thought I'd point this out.

2

May I ask, whatwas the reasoning behind adding VAC support in lieu of
the 2nd sound card option? Was it not possible to optionally allow the
selection ofeither the 2nd sound card or VAC?

[Tim]
It eliminates additional AF cables from the primary soundcard to the second
soundcard which could be an additional way RFI could get into the
radio. And, iIf there becomes an open source version of the VAC, then the
other reasoning would be lower cost to do digital modes since you do not have to
pay for an additional sound card.
.
I am currently using the software with a new SR-40 and expect to acquire my
SDR-1000 in the Christmas time frame. The radio and the PowerSDR software
are nothing short of amazing!

This is really putting a spark back into my 48 year ham radio hobby.

Re: [Flexradio] Second sound card option, other bugs, etc.

2005-10-31 Thread Robert McGwier
Through my own experimentation, now that we have the errors in the
callbacks removed, I find no advantage in having a card talking to the
PowerSDR system and having a VAC. In fact, in most cases (SoundMax,
Turtle Beach, etc.) I find the VAC to be more lightweight. An audio
card for a program has buffers, etc. in it. I do not think the VAC adds
sufficiently more latency over the buffering in the sound card to rule
out its use at all but I will leave that to experimentation to determine
if the latency is acceptable. The pluses of VAC are no more physical
cables. If you want to use a second sound card, you can use VAC and
audio repeater with 100-200ms more latency to use the sound card. I
think that begins to be objectionable. If you can make a serious case
for needing a 2nd card over VAC, let's hear it.

On the PTT/MOX once and then dead, I can completely reproduce that
here with my Lynx and Soundmax. It does not happen with the D44. This
happens to all modes, including CW. Since it happens to CW, it is in
the callback itself (which is different from the D44/Firebox callback).

On not being able to use PTT causing keyers and programs except in
Semibreakin mode, that was trivial. It was as simple as commenting out
a completely unneeded if statement!

[Flexradio] 1.4.5 Preview 2 and MP3+ not working for me

2005-10-31 Thread Mike Lewis
I tried out Preview 2 by starting with a clean new database. I was not able
to get the audio working using ASIO with the Creative SoundBlaster MP3+.
Preview 1 works fine before and after running P2.

If I switch to Unsupported Card and MME or DirectSound, it begins to work
again. Back to ASIO and no sound in or out again.

I imported from my Preview 1 database later and no new issues, no audio
either. Preview 1 is working well however in RX only mode here.

I'm going to try 40 meter split again, SSB, transmitting 7063 and
listening on frequency for EUro and listening up some if you can break
