Guilty as charged - that was me.  It was experimental and meant 
to be removed before the release, but 0.7.10 came out before I even 
noticed!  Since I haven't got time to finish that bit of code (make it 
fly circuits) at the moment it might as well be ripped out - I'll send a 
patch.

Hopefully I should eventually be able to rewrite it using David M's 
3D model interface without the problems it has now.

 Aha-- that would make sense, if there's a whole lot of extra models.  I'll
 go to that airport tonight and see if those puppies are all there.
 
 Why are they there?  Can we get rid of them?  Are there other airports with
 similar traps?

No, other than too much texture usage for some older cards 
(KFSO hammers one of the machines at work).
