Thanks, I have still a small collection too, and I could also zip them and put
up for download too. I was never been happy with my work and I think Vadym has
the better knowledge to prepare them to use!

Maybe we should have several sets- one set for each cloudtype like cu small, cu
big, cb small, cb big etc...
This gives more randomness and it shoulden't increase the package too big
later...

I have a collection of cloud photos I've taken over the summer ... I had
plans to try cumulus textures myself. If anyone would like to try , I could
zip the photos and put them up for download somewhere. They are mostly
towering cumulus tops , so I don't know how much use they would be, but my
own attempts haven't turned out so well.
By the way , I still think Heiko did a good job on them...

The cloudlayers.xml file is already in the property tree under
/environment/cloudlayers. :)

You can get an instant preview by changing the cloud settings under
Environment->Clouds when using the Manual Weather Scenario. I find this a very
useful way to tune the parameters in cloudlayers.xml.

The cloud rendering is really getting to be phenomenal. Very impressive. I'd
vote for the cloud modeler[s] to get the $250 developer prize. :-)

In fact, I think the textures Vadym produced are much closer to stratus clouds

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Photorealistic textures for cumulus clouds

2009-10-27 Thread Heiko Schulz
Hi,

The new clouds by Stuart and Vadym Kukhtin looks really great!
I only see some issues with fps with the stratus-clouds.

As I can see they still make use of my clouds texture I did last year, which
looks now really ugly.

With using Vadym's texture, they looks much better and let me decreasing
to 10 - it still looks great, it is working, but fps are much
better now.

The few things which I don't like yet are, some transparency issues with
particles and/ or a second cloud layers above.

And of course that they don't move with the wind! ;-)

I attached the cloudlayers.xml with the changed texture path and num-sprites
for the stratus-clouds.

Kind Regards
HHS

I've committed the texture and renamed the original for future use. The

Yes, the best textures I've seen yet! Weneed them in CVS!

The nice thing I like on FGFS and Stuarts implementation:
just edit the cloudlayers.xml, and you will have!
And if someone is able to program python scripts then cloud editing could be
possible in Blender as well...

Hear, hear. Quite the best I have seen. We should adopt these textures. Does
show up a couple of snags in our weather scenarios, though. There is not
nearly enough vertical development in the cumulus clouds, particularly in
the thunderstorm scenario.

It would be a good idea to keep the response from them in cvs somewhere

[Flightgear-devel] Photorealistic textures for cumulus clouds

2009-10-18 Thread Vadym Kukhtin
Hello!

I'm really like new clouds from Stuart, especially Stratus improvements.

Last weeks I had few long flights, in slow-n-low aircraft, and looked
at FG 3d-clouds for hours.
Then I look at RL clouds, and notice that they have no such smooth
edges, as in FG.
So I decided to make my own textures.

As I don't have enough photos, I discovered website with free good
photos. Then contact with its owner and he gave me permission to use
photos under any license, if I put link to website anywhere.

So I downloaded dozen of photos, extract from them clouds and made some retouch.
Here you can see what I got:
http://valeo.flightgear.ru/sshot/clouds/

Its look very realistic for me, only a bit shaggy sometimes.

If you like it and want to have same clouds, grab and replace this file:
http://valeo.flightgear.ru/cl_cumulus.png

If someone want to add this texture to cvs-data, then write comment
in, maybe, cloudlayers.xml:
"cl_cumulus.png was created with photos from sky.aw.net.ua"
