Re: [Flightgear-users] 3D Rendering Problem

What I was told is that slow framerate on ATI cards in Linux is a driver issue. About the only thing people like you and I can do is wait for a fix from the DRI developers. My ATI 9100 IGP gets 2500 frames in 5 sec / 518 FPS. That's with the Linux Xorg drivers. A friend of mine who has an ATI Mobility M9 in his machine gets over 6000 frames in 5 sec (over 1200fps) using the Linux ATI proprietary drivers. The proprietary ATI driver, available from their website http://www.ati.com works for just about every recent ATI card. The only one it doesn't work for is (you guessed it) the 9100 IGP (there's a little note about it in the middle of the release notes docs). I suggest you go and get the ATI proprietary driver and install it. If you need help with that I'm happy to offer advice; send me an off-list message. Re: [Flightgear-users] Re: Flying Helicopters ?
VMWare's graphics driver won't be able to use accelerated graphics. You can try, but I doubt you'll get more than a couple of frames a second. It would be a shame to spend money on VMWare just for that. OTOH if you have VMWare already it'd be a good thing to try and let us know how it works. I can suggest trying dual-boot instead. Installing Windows on VMWare will take just as much hard drive space on the VMWare virtual disk as it would on a dual-boot disk. The big disadvantage is that the dual-boot system won't have access to your linux filesystem when in Windows so you won't be able to share scenery. If you need help with managing partitions, I can offer some advice as I've successfully done partition resizing before. My biggest piece of advice, right off the bat, is BACK UP YOUR DATA before you try anything of the sort. If you want help with this feel free to message me off-list. Re: AW: [Flightgear-users] To start flight gear first time
Roland Holpp, Neckartailfingen wrote: Hi, thank You. I use the automatically created icon on my desktop. Isnt this the right way to start it !? If you hear the engine of the Cessna you're probably up and running. The desktop icon is the way to go (at least, it works for me). You can double-check that you're up by right-clicking the mouse (you'll get a cross). Then move the mouse left/right. You should see the yoke in the Cessna's cockpit move (at least, the 3D cockpit Cessna). You could also type v to see that the view changes to an external view, then V to get back in the cockpit. There's a short reference which lists all of the keystrokes you'll want to know about in order to take a quick flight (what buttons for throttle, flaps, etc.) since you're using a mouse for flight. You can find that here: http://flightgear.org/Docs/FGShortRef.html Personally I prefer the 3D (non-hires) cockpit. Of the three C172s listed, this is the last (bottom) one. It works great for me. Cheers, Josh -- I downloaded fg 9.8 yesterday and cannot get it running. I see the airport and the strobo light by night, I hear the engine of the cessna, but dont know the next step. I have no joystick up now, for I-ll trie it with the mouse at first. I use windows 2000. Who can help me to use flight gear, as I use www.pocketfms.com http://www.pocketfms.com/ for flying in the real ai without any problems now. Are you using FGRUN to launch the sim if so when you get to the page with run on it click the advanced button then select time amd set it to noon. Don't use the full screen hi res Cessna it seems to have a serious problem at present.Use one of the other Cessna's or one of the other aircraft. Using thr mouse if you right click you will move from an arrow to a cross to back to back arrows and bac to the single arrow again. to fly the aircraft with the mouse you need the cross selected.Moving the mouse side to side and up and down works the ailerons and elevators. To work the rudder you need to hold the left mouse button down and move the mouse side to side. You will need to do this as the aircraft pulls to the left. This is a feature of the propeller models so dont think it is a bug. Then when you have had a good fly you might like to look through the docs sections to see all the other fabulous features of Flightgear. Vincent Trouilliez wrote: Now what would be good, is to have an instrument that displays torque, because the instrument panel doesn't have one as far as I can see, so it's impossible to gauge just where I am when I vary the collective pitch with Pg Up/Dn. Probably less of a problem if you have a joystick, since you can visually see where the know is, but since I am using the Keyboard (at least for now) It's not the same as a panel instrument, but the HUD has an indicator for how much throttle (or in the heli's case, collective) is applied. Just press 'h' to turn on the HUD. [Flightgear-users] Atlas
Does anybody know if Atlas works with the latest FlightGear 0.9.8-pre2? I can get Atlas-0.2.2 to run but it seems to have trouble reading Airports and Navaids. I tried to check out the CVS version of Atlas but pressing Enter for the password, as per the online instructions, doesn't work. Does anybody have Atlas working for newer versions of FlightGear? BTW, for any of you FG developers/contributors reading this, you guys are doing an AWESOME job. Maybe 10 years ago I used to fiddle around with old versions of Micro$oft's FLTSIM. Now that I've found your great software I'm getting back into flight simulation.
