I'm not sure if this will help at all, but typically (if you have an ATI
or nVidia video card and possibly others) you will want to go to the
respective graphics chip set manufacturer web site and download the
latest drivers from there. Microsoft will give you direct3d, but
FlightGear runs on opengl which is something entirely different.
FlightGear uses opengl because it is supported on windows, mac, freebsd,
linux, sgi, solaris, and just about every other moderatly popular platform.

Regards,

Curt.

All that is required as far as I know is a Re: preceding the original

Greetings friends,

I am emailing this to enquire about a problem i am having when trying to
load FlightGear 0.9.8

Everytime i try to run the flight simulator, i get to the select an aircraft
screen and it freezes up and i cant do anything so have to restart the
computer. I'm running windows 2000.

Is Flight Gear more reliable when run on XP - is it worth me changing my OS
to XP? (need to stay on a windows platform).

Thank you,
Justin

Please provide some more infos about the hardware. There are few people
having problems with audio cards. It may be a not very good OpenGL
support of the video card too.
The fact that fgfs freezes before running any sound (i.e. when choosing
the airplane to fly with) lets me think it's something related to the
video section. Anyway, search for other posts relating audio cards, I
guess that's the main hardware issue right now :-(
I don't think it's a Win2k problem anyway.

Thank you Roberto and Arnt for the responses to my initial query.

My system specifications:
Windows 2000 Professional
AMD Athlon XP2000+ (1.67GHz)
384MB PC133mhz SDRAM
2x HD, 1x 10GB, 1x 80GB
64MB SiS AG315P-64 Graphics Card
Creative Sound Blaster Live Sound Card

Following Roberto's comments, I have just downloaded and installed the
latest drivers and it does run now, for a bit, before crashing and locking
up my system, i will look into my sound card shortly to see if that will
remedy the crashing problem.

Arnt, is it possible to install GNU/Linux along side Windows2000?
I have plenty of HD space so as long as i am able to install it along side
win2k i will do that, otherwise i cant afford to loose windows 2000 (have no
idea to configure a linux machine onto the university network that im on,
and compatibility with various software i need to use).

Thanks alot,
Justin

Yes, that is possible.
Most modern distributions do this quite comfortably and automagically
nowadays.
I predict that once you installed linux and started to use it a little
bit, you will soon use it more and more, and after some time you will
have problems remembering why you kept windows anyways. But that can
take some time...

however:
Before installing Linux for the explicit purpose of running Flightgear,
you should check the direct rendering is supported for your graphics
card. Everything except nvidia's, ati's, recently via's unichrome too,
can be a problem. I don't say it has to be. Just check before you start
messing with your harddrive. Without direct rendering (e.g. with 2d only
graphic drivers, flightgear will not be usable.

On the other hand, you might want to try Linux anyways. Even if you
don't use it for Flightgear for now. It is IMO the better operating
system for most things u usually do on your pc. If you get in trouble
with your graphic card's 3d driver, get a cheapo used earlier radeon or
gforce, and you'll be alright.

If you need help setting up Linux on dual boot along with windows, many
people here will be glad to assist.

Christian

Thanks alot,
Justin

when I expand them, somtimes they work and othertimes not. Where can
I get cities like New York with good graphics?

I would strongly advise that you do not untar your scenery files into a
directory already containing scenery. Untar them into a different
directory, and then add these to your FG_SCENERY. If you use fgrun (the
GUI frontend for FlightGear), then hit prev until it will go back no
further, and add the directory using the add button above the box
labelled FG_SCENERY.
