oh wow!! great to see another printaholic on the list..the nice thing about teaching printmaking is getting to use the presses..plans for spring celebrating involve this idea i am working on where you make plates with cardboard and high performance clear duck tape and then seal them with gloss medium, ink them and run them through the press..the tape folds and squishes in spontaneous ways and embosses into the Rives BFK paper..have been able to create large contrast as the recessed areas are darker with ink..the spontaneous mark of the tape is way cool..thought of it from inking bubble wrap and making prints..um, woops..sorry for the nerd ramble..just the thought of printing feels like funneling pixie sticks..if you ever need to print for hours until you can't see call me for the print party!! IN DARKROOM (w/ safelight) squeegee emulsion onto both sides of stretched screen. allow emulsion to dry. 3.) place design screen on exposure table. (ultraviolet light table w/ black fabric cover vacuum pump to seal it up) 4.) expose screen for 7 to 12 minutes, depending on the opacity of the paper your design is on. (less time for clear acetate.) 5.) NOW SAFE FOR REGULAR LIGHT. hose down your screen with a power washer on a meduim setting. this blows out the places where the dark marks of your design blocked the light kept it from activating the emulsion. (emulsion stops ink, so where there is no emulsion - the lines of your design - ink can go through.) 6.)let screen dry, and you're ready to print! lay the screen down on whatever you want to print onto, glob some ink at one end of the screen, and squeegee it across. SCHLORP! you have a print! ***NOTE: since you are not printing under the exact conditions that i was printing, you'll have to find alternatives to, say, the darkroom with safelight, the ultraviolet vacuum table, and the power washer. I am the person that started the mail art project from my students..Amy Baylaurel Casey 2. Yes, you should send something back 3. I have 3 classes working on this project..a class of non-art majors that has until this Wed to send their projects, a Drawing class that is using it for extra credit and has all semester, and an Art History class that has not gotten the assignment yet, and has 2 weeks after to complete..and must relate the project to Dada and Surrealism 4. I typed a list of names and addresses and passed it out to all of the classes. The non-art majors (there are 10) have to choose 10 names and send 10 items, the other classes only have to choose 1 5. There are some slackers in the class for non-art majors who will be mailing things out late 6. I have made mail art to send to everyone on the list myself, but have become emotionally attached to all of it, so I have not mailed my own yet If I did not answer a question please ask again.I tried to remember all of them but its early and I am in pre-coffee mode!! Re: FLUXLIST: frozen/fried events
Alan, I would like to participate, but I also have a few questions concerning this project 1. Are you just looking for effects on the document by itself or can it be combined with other things: ex. baked into a cake or fried with an egg, rather than just fried on its own 2. this project became the topic of much discussion with my students..can some of them participate? count me in!! -John, would it be ok with you if i did a series of war poems based on yours-seems to be very therapeutic. also, a colleague of mine suggested reading into a mic using the Dragon reading program..it has yielded recent art history exam answers such as Demons prices first teacher if you read too fast, I guess the program tends to invent interesting words based on the sounds-have you ever tried this? perhaps reading Hamlet could yield lemon wacky hello or other fun things amy -- John M. I made a mask in college called Happy Easter(n) Ganesha it is a pink plaster elephant/human mask with a crown, earrings, and trunk made of plastic wrap filled with metallic Easter confetti, sealed and shaped with waterbase sealer. I am starting a mail art/performance with a lawn gnome, taking it out for a day off, and then sending it out to the next individual for a day out with him. I would like photos taken, and perhaps other documentation sent to me where it will be collected and posted onto a website, with activity and whereabouts updates. The goal is to spread happiness and fun, and to see how long and far the gnome can actually travel. I will be taking him out for pancakes and to a movie.
