I also worked on a project for a MailChip client at one point and the business practices around MailChimp turned out to be somewhat suspect in terms of providing consistent service. I just signed up. The web interface for sign-ups didn't work; displayed an error message. I used the mail interface. Received TWO confirmation requests, replied to one of them. Got "waiting for moderator approval", then "Welcome" along with regular list mail shortly after.
