2011-06-28 Thread Mohamed Ibrahim
basically, how can someone register on linkedIn with foundation-l address?
it was a linked account that caused this problem

Can we add something like Invitation to connect on LinkedIn in the filter
so this kind of e-mail will be automatically discarded?

Re: [Foundation-l] About the catastrophy in Japan

2011-03-11 Thread Mohamed Ibrahim
I'm glad you're safe and hope that we get confirmation of the well-being of
all wikimedians around Japan.
please keep us informed.

Best wishes,
Mido

Thank you Juliana and Casey, I am safe. My family too. I'd love to
appreciate all supports, concerns and courage expressed both publicly
and privately from Wikimedians in all corners.

All members of Wikimedians in Kansai are safe. I had contact with each
of them. We are in a remote area from the epicenter, so not affected.
Things however look really a mess and sorry to hear. I hope best in
all in suffered areas, particularly in Tohoku region.

As Casey said, all of confirmed info on individual Wikimedians in
Japan are fine at this moment including Takashi Ota, Miya,
 Aokomoriuta, Kzhr and Carkuni.
We have not heard from some active Wikimedians recently, but since
troubles in public services including communications, electricity and
public transportation are reported, it is understandable. I heard some
personal troubles from the people in suffered areas and hoe them all
 the best.

In general I think our curiosity need patience for a while: from my
own experience in Kobe Great Earthquake it takes days to grasp the
 whole ongoing incidents.

Thank you for your wishes and prayer, Japanese Wikimedians are so
active to write on the quake and upload some photos to Commons. We
need more time to handle things, but I hope we all are so fine that
provide good reports on the quake.

 Best,

Naoko mentioned on another list that she was safe and that (I think)
all of the other Japanese Wikimedians that they contacted were fine
too. It's almost 08:00 JST, so I expect most of them to be coming
online and giving updates soon. :-)

Re: [Foundation-l] Since Egypt has shutdown internet, should we too?

2011-02-11 Thread Mohamed Ibrahim
Hello all,

Of course it's all over the news, Mubarak has stepped down
and rebuilding Egypt has just started :)
Wikimedians I'm a aware of is safe and were part of this great revolution,
and we all thank you for your support.
Another note, on Wael Ghonim who was widely credited as one of the main
people who moved the protests in 25th Jan, he was also leading the Health
speaks initiative from Google - enriching Arabic Wikipedia medical content-
and was discussing over with the Wikimedians in Egypt the Wikipedia 10th
anniversary event in Cairo sponsored by Google in part just few weeks before
the revolution. I don't know yet the status of that but no matter what I
promise that we will work even harder on spreading free knowledge to help
building our country. and of course any help from the WMF will be most
welcome.
Again, I was never met with such solidarity from all over the world before,
it really meant a lot to us.

Thank you all

It is not the same when you are worried about people which you don't

  movement has changed my perspective.

For the first time I've realized that people which I know may be in
problem after L'Aquila earthquake. Then, a number of other events
followed: Iranian protests and present Egyptian protests, but also big
smoke in Moscow and recent Brisbane floods. Even financial crisis in
Ireland makes me to think about my Wikimedian friend there. And
whenever I hear about severe weather conditions somewhere in US, I am
thinking do I know anyone there. I mean, it is not the same to me to
hear about protests in Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt or Iran. I know
  Wikimedians from Egypt and Iran.

From one point, it is burdensome. I don't care just about my close
surroundings, but about thousands of people all over the world. But
from the other, it makes happy to know that I have friends all over
the world and that we care for each other.

But, I would like that we don't stop here. I would like to see
Wikimedia movement (WMF, chapters, Wikimedians) to be able to give
real help to Wikimedians -- but not just Wikimedians -- all over the
world in such circumstances. It is not just about keeping information
free. Wikimedia movement has enough resources now to give some real
help: it could be about organizing donations of laptops with Wikipedia
on itself with OLPC; it could be about food.

  Mido, please, keep us informed!

Ting and Milos, wonderfully said, and very warmly received. Thank you.

Add to that the fact that a portion of their discussion archives is
deliberately hidden from the public as if they are debating state security
issues. So even after a decision is taken, we only have a patchy view of
 the
process that led to that decision.

I agree with what Muhammad and Mark has said
it's a pity that such resolutions that affect the whole community is
controlled like this..
resulting in such projects that really make Wikimedia looks like a host for
childish projects that's
written in a funny language never seen written before in
any respectable scientific book, website, etc..

 Erm ... huh?

 1) If you're interested in helping, and have experience/knowledge of
languages, then get involved with the committee.

 2) They're getting things achieved - they're fostering the development of
new language projects, making decisions, getting the projects started, and
doing this in a very effective way. Compare this with the ineffectual
procedure for starting an entirely new project in any language, which hasn't
gotten anywhere in the last 3(?) years.

I agree the committee did a good job in their mission and I'm not
generalizing my critique, I misworded my comment.

3) Please point to _recent_ examples where they've made a bad choice (i.e.
Klingon doesn't count, as that was before their time). I'm not aware of any.

I'm not willing to open a long discussion on something that most people are
not willing to reconsider and I respected that and left the newly-opened
project to see what will happen.
However, the main point that triggered my comment was that I was just
browsing through and found really a poor standard of language and articles
that I even felt uncomfortable that the Wikipedia logo was over there.
I just hope that in the future the process will be more transparent and
considers all sides of the matter. I hope no one were offended as I didn't
mean it this way, and if in anyway I could help I won't hesitate to step in.

I agree that it's not good that they have a hidden discussion forum; as much
as possible of the discussion leading up to a new project should be public,
and i can't see a reason for secrecy. Apart from that, though, I don't
understand these (somewhat bitchy) comments at all...
