FWIW, my draft brought a few high-level questions to my mind,
which I posted there, hoping others will weigh in
so I can refine the draft a bit before posting it:

Just for the record: in this case the thread we're referring to is the
one actually started by you (when you mailed the board list with your
questions a while ago). You were kept in c.c. of all the discussions,
and as such did not miss anything on that front.___

Re: Travel committee disfunctional?

2016-03-18 Thread Jeff F. T.
Indeed the issue, as far as I know, is that the Travel Committee is has
finite human resources. IMHO the only way to alleviate this is to have
additional trusted Foundation members join that team to share the
workload.

Personally, I'm quite grateful for their existence. I can imagine the
processing times would be much longer if the committee didn't exist and
everything had to go through the Board (as you folks know how loaded
the board##SELECTION_END## is already :)___

Ah, I was basing myself on what I'd heard a while back (that there
wasn't exactly a lot of people willing to do this work), and was still
under the impression that the biggest problem would be "available time
and energy" for people to process requests.

After all, I can imagine it's a lot of unexciting verification work
(decipher receipts in various languages and currencies, make sure
numbers match, discuss among team members, write emails, etc.).

I presumed the verification work to be more complicated than the funds
transfers, so I guess that colored my appraisal of the situation.

Re: This week in Gnome?

2016-05-18 Thread Jeff F. T.
I'm under the impression that even just making a digest of Planet GNOME
alone would be a full-time job* (also tricky in terms of curation)...
If on top of that you widen the scope to include even third-party apps
from outside of the GNOME infrastructure, well... you turn into That
Recently Discussed News Site That Shall Not Be Named.

It also overlaps, to some extent, with http://news.gnome.org or our
various social media outlets (much easier to just point to blog posts
using social media). IMHO, those would seem to be good places for this
writing to happen, were it to be in any official fashion.

*: or for it to be done collectively and systematically, the
##SELECTION_END##Engagement team would need to be much bigger than it
is right now. Care to join? :)___

Pre-register for the 2016 GNOME Summit in Montréal!

2016-09-04 Thread Jeff F. T.
Hi folks, we’re planning to host the GNOME Summit in Montréal this
year, most likely on October 8-9-10 (US Colombus Day week-end, Canadian
Thanksgiving). See https://wiki.gnome.org/Events/Summit/

Please pre-register* by Friday (so we can estimate the size of the
event), indicate any topics of interest you would like to propose for
collective tackling during the summit, and indicate your travel and
accommodation needs. I will try to secure the venue and figure out all
the details surrounding the event soon. Oh, and if you’re in any
position to ask one of the GNOME-friendly companies for sponsorship,
please do so and drop me an email. Thanks!

Oops, I realize now that I sent this only to foundation-list
instead of sending it to foundation-announce. Anyway, let's consider
this as a reminder for everybody interested to put down their names on
the "/Participants" page!

Having more names in there will increase the likelihood of the event
happening by making it a more compelling case for the venue and
sponsors.

Some other good piece of news: today I got a preliminary confirmation
for the venue. I'll get the details at the end of the week.

I also checked with the Alt Hotel (~5 mins walk from the venue) and
participants would be able to book at a reduced rate (140* CAD per room
per night instead of 160) simply by mentioning that it's "part of the
group for the GNOME conference at the ETS on thanksgiving
weekend".##SELECTION_END##

He would also get my vote. Those who have ever talked to me about email
or follow me on various online outreach outlets (including Twitter or
G+) might know how much of a fan I am of the tireless work he quietly
does on Evolution, which is a fairly critical productivity tool to
many.

However, for him to get such a prize, one would need to ensure he
actually attends GUADEC. I have never had the opportunity to meet him
there so far, although I often expressed my interest in seeing him at
GUADEC, so this is me sending a wish into the world that he can be
extracted from Brno this year ;)___
