RE: Framemaker vs. Flare
I used Flare for several months, starting last November when version 1.0 was still in Beta. I found it to be a viable option to RH. Flare 1.0 has a few bugs and quirks to it but then so does RH. One thing that impressed me about the beta testing was that MadCap really encouraged testers to report bugs, moreso than many software houses I've seen. They even had a contest for who could report the most. As a result, the inaugaral product was actually pretty good, although it still had a few minor problems. If you are looking for a great HAT, Flare 1.0 isn't there yet and I can't speak for v2.0(scheduled for release next month) but MadCap seems to be pretty dedicated to make people forget about RoboHelp. RE: Framemaker vs. Flare
Hi A.J. (et al.), We have not *used* Flare, but we *have* recently been engaged in an indepth exercise to analyze and evaluate a wide variety of help authoring tools. Different types of tools with different purposes. Specifically, we found that Flare: --Advertises itself as a help authoring tool (whereas Frame is considered more of a desktop publishing tool, which requires [as others have pointed out] additional tools to convert to online help). --Apparently does not allow you to import Frame content, not even as .MIF files (if that is an issue for you). --Does not offer advanced search features, only simple text searches. --Does not support the ability to directly create PDFs of modular units of documentation. --Does not yet support DITA, though it is coming in a future release. --Requires MS .NET Framework version 2.0. --Is still relatively green (new), thus largely unproven and of questionable stability. RE: Color definition problems
The simple fact is that there is no direct translation from CMYK to RGB because these different color models are built on a totally different basis in physics. RGB is an additive color model because you're dealing with points of light (glowing phosphor dots on a CRT or back-lit crystals on an LCD). CMYK is a subtractive color model for ink-on-paper reproduction. The color you see is a result of all the wavelengths that are not absorbed by the ink, which is why it's called subtractive; the ink subtracts out all undesired wavelengths from the (presumably) while light that illuminates the page. The problem is that RGB can only simulate CMYK because the models are so fundamentally different, and there are dozens (if not hundreds) of different mathematical algorithms for how to translate values in one model to the other. The one thing you know when you work with CMYK color definitions is that if you make color separations and furnish the films (or files) to a print vendor, you'll get the same results regardless of what tool you used to generate the separations. But it's virtually guaranteed that the printed results will match *neither* tool's on-screen simulation of the color. Probably not even close. If you're trying to design a CMYK color that has a particular appearance, the only right way to do it is to work from printed samples and then simply live with whatever screen representation you get in a particular tool. Or if the color is only being used as a spot color you can use the Pantone color matching system (or an equivalent) where you pick a color from a set of swatches and refer to its reference number when you provide your job specifications to your print vendor. Problem in Conversion from FrameMaker 7.1 files to HTMl help files
Hi Sulekha: Are the page numbers showing up in the actual topics, or in the HTML Help TOC? I guess that depends in how your source doc is written. But I am guessing that your headings do not have page numbers. If you are dealing with a TOC issue, I think you have to check your WebWorks template, preferences, voodoo widget, whatever. IIRC (and there is every chance that I recall *nothing* correctly), there is a WebWorks configuration that tells it to either ignore the TOC page (in the source doc). The other option is to supress page numbers, which is a WebWorks configuration at the template level. Something that tells Webworks "ignore all instances of '(page xx)' when generating Help files." I wish I could be of more help. But I have not used WebWorks for a while, and I do not currently have access to my old conversion template or the documentation. -- Brian On 8/18/06, Sulekha Mehta wrote: > > I have used FrameMaker 7.1 and used WebWorks Publisher 6 to convert the > FrameMaker 7.1 files to HTML Help files. merging two documents
It happens automatically. Open the older file and the newer file. With the newer file in the active window, invoke the Utilities > Compare Documents command. Choose the Summary and Composite Documents option and run the comparison. The result will be a new document window that has the name of the newer file with a "COMP" suffix, and it will contain all the content of both documents. Content that appears in the older document and not the newer one will be tagged with an new condition tag called Deleted, and the content that appears in the newer file but not the older one will be tagged with the Added condition. My recommendation for the next step is to review all of the tagged chunks to see if they can be made unconditional or whether you need to delete something to make the text read correctly. Once you've reviewed all the additions and deletions, you can use the Edit Condition Tag button in the Conditional Text dialog to delete the Deleted and Added conditions, making the text unconditional in the process. I would like to incorporate changes in both documents (books) into a new document. I read about 'comparing books', but could not figure out how to create a 'new' document that included the changes from both documents. Any help is appreciated. PDF - OT
Hello all, I have a question about copying and pasting lines and circles drawn in a PDF - using the Acrobat Drawing tools. I would like to select them and transfer to another PDF (revision) but when I do, the selection on the clipboard rotates on the new PDF. (rotates clockwise in the pasting process). The original file's layout is portrait and never has been rotated. Sounds silly to ask, but I have an instructor that marks up books (PDF) and uses the PDF as a presentation in a classroom. The book (PDF) is pretty big and he doesn't what to take the time to redraw the artwork. Anyone care to comment why the copy and paste gets rotated and how to fix it?
