RE: How to delete trailing spaces in one go?

2007-08-06 Thread Harro de Jong
Bodvar Bjorgvinsson wrote:

I thought I had seen in this list a discussion on how to remove
trailing spaces that so often come with Word documents that are either
imported into FrameMaker or opened by FrameMaker (by conversion). I
have a plethora of these and the closest I have got is to:
 Find: Text: . \p
 Replace: Text: .\p
but this results in the new \p taking on the paragraph attributes of
the next line, removing extra vertical space or changing to
superscript if next line starts on a superscript.

You can do it in two steps:
1. Create a character tag that changes the font.
2. Find . \p, Replace 'by pasting' with that character tag.
3. Select one of the spaces you've just converted. and Copy this space.
4. Find text and character formats on clipboard, Replace To text and
leave the text box empty.
This will leave the \p with the new character tag. This will be an issue
if the \p is in a paragraph that is used in a generated list (TOC,
etc.), but otherwise I don't think it'll be a problem.

Alternatively, this can be done with a scripting tool like QuickKeys.

border around a word?

2007-08-06 Thread Gunnar Carlsson

Hi,

Does anyone know if there is an easy way to put a border around 1-2
words in a sentence, for example to mark a button.
Example:Please press ABORT to leave this funcion. Here I
would like to have a thin border around ABORT. It is very simple to
do in Word, but I have not found anything like that in FrameMaker.

Any idea?

found by search function

2007-08-06 Thread Gunnar Carlsson

Hi,
Thanks for suggestions about borders around text.

Another question: has FrameMaker something like ^ in Word, meaning
what you found.
Extremely useful when adding text, for example Search
for*, change to [^] which means that all words starting with
for will be in [ ].

Any idea what FrameMaker may call ^ ?

Not so simple in FrameMaker: there is no basic function that I know of for
this. An 'at insertion point' anchored frame with a solid border does it, but
you have to have a text frame inside the anchored frame, so positioning and
alignment is fiddly. SiliconPrairie's Autotext plug-in offers a quick, easy and
cheap method for inserting composite objects like this from its own menu.

I'd be interested to know if there is a more elegant solution.

Re: border around a word?

2007-08-06 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain

I don't have a way to make a complete box appear around the words,
but I can and do put a line above and below the words. This gets
me most of the functionality that I am looking---i.e., the kind of
unusual/special emphasis that you are striving for, I think!

To do this, I created a character format called Important, but
this can be anything, of course! :). I set its default font to
have an underline (specifically, the Numeric Underline) *and*
an Overline. See the character designer for more information.

Applying this to the words in question, gives me *most* of the
equivalent of the MS Word capability: lines above and below the
words, but not the left and right side.

FrameMaker 8 justification auto letter spacing broken?

2007-08-06 Thread Mike Wickham

I've installed the trial version of FrameMaker 8 and am having what I
consider to be a major display problem. My FM doc no longer looks the same
on screen as in PDF. There is a change in behavior in the interaction
between justification and automatic letter spacing settings. The two
settings have become mutually exclusive, where they used to work
concurrently. Before I file a bug report, or try a reinstallation, is anyone
else seeing this, or am I the only one?

In all instances, I have set the printer from within FrameMaker to Adobe PDF
before opening the documents, and justification is turned on for the
paragraph format. Changing the DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics= setting does not
help. Here are the results of test settings:

A
DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=Off
Automatic Letter Spacing is checked
1. Some justified lines don't reach the right-hand column edge.
2. Automatic letter spacing is applied.
COMMENT: It turns out that the lines in the paragraph to
which FrameMaker has applied auto letter spacing are the same
lines that do not reach the right-hand column edge!

B
DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=Off
Automatic Letter Spacing is unchecked
1. Justified lines all reach right-hand column edge.
2. No automatic letter spacing is applied.

C
DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=On
Automatic Letter Spacing is checked
**These are the settings I normally use.**
1. Few justified lines reach right-hand column edge.
2. Automatic letter spacing is applied.

D
DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=On
Automatic Letter Spacing is unchecked
1. Justified lines all reach right-hand column edge.
2. No automatic letter spacing is applied.

I miss having my document look the same in FM as it does in PDF!

Interesting Printing Problem

2007-08-06 Thread Sam Beard
Hello All,

Please forgive the cross-post, but I wanted to share this with both
lists. I'm on Frame 7.2b144 on Windows XP. Yesterday, I had to convert
some documents over from Frame to Word. Saving out to Word didn't work
well, with crashes of Frame the few times I tried. So, I tried
converting to RTF and then opening those files in Word and saving out as
regular Word files. This worked mostly, but there were a couple of files
that it just didn't work on, with the result a FRAME file instead of an
RTF. So, with those files, I converted to HTML and then opened and saved
as Word files.

So far, so good. This morning, when I tried to print a Frame
document, all I got was a VERY small full-page version of the page
centered on the 8.5 x 11 page, but only measuring something like 2 x 1,
or so. I tried another document, same result. I tried a Word document
and it printed normally. So, I restarted Frame and now it's back to
normal size on the Frame pages. I don't understand exactly what
happened, but thought I'd let the groups know and see if there are some
answers. Is this something known or is it something new?

Thanks much,

Import Settings: FM MIF to RH?

2007-08-06 Thread Randy . Handel
Anyone have advice or clues on how to manipulate import settings for
RoboHelp when importing FM mif files?

Our department has just switched from Word to Frame to try and develop
single-sourcing, so we are having growing pains. Ideally, we would like the
images we link to in our FrameMaker files be ready for print--and then have
the same images convert in RoboHelp and be ready for the web. Everything
runs smoothly until the images open in RoboHelp. No matter what our format,
size, or resolution, RoboHelp forces JPG formatting and resizing. I don't
know which causes the degradation, but in the end we have a fuzzy unreadable
screen shot.

The only solution I have come up with so far--which defeats the single in
single-sourcing, is to resize the images by hand (or script) and then
replace the ones generated by the RoboHelp import. Please, someone have a
more elegant solution.

This has likely been handled before and elsewhere, but no one seems to have
addressed this specific issue. Likely it is just so obvious that I am
missing something because I amazed this is not covered all over the web.

Need 8 Install Help

2007-08-06 Thread Randall Larson-Maynard
I was a beta 8 tester.

Beta 8 expired yesterday. I downloaded the trial 8 copy and installed. All went
fine.

Started program, get splash screen for trial and since I have not gotten a code
yet, I click Continue Trial and then Next. I get a small dialog box that says
Product license has expired.

Greatso I call India for support and they tell me to delete all temp files.
I do that, plus all the chk files. Still won't open past dialog box.

I tried setting my PC's clock, but then I get the same screen wanting a code,
which I do not have.

Anyone out there know the fix for this? Of course, I need to work with Frame two
hours ago!

RE: FM To PowerPoint

2007-08-06 Thread Johnson, Kathleen
Do you need all of the bells and whistles in PowerPoint? If not, just
use FrameMaker and PDF. Use disconnected pages with three workflows -
one for the slide material, one below that for viewer notes, and one
below that for presentation notes. Generate a PDF of all three workflows
for the presentation notes. Crop the bottom workflow out leaving just
the two top workflows and save that PDF as the viewer notes. Crop both
of the bottom workflows out and save that PDF as the presentation. Run
the presentation PDF in full screen mode. Your situation will determine
if you can live without the PowerPoint bells and whistles, but if you
can, it saves tons of time. If you can'twell good luck!

A related question: Office 2007 is supposed to be more XML-aware. Is
this the case with PowerPoint 2007? Perhaps there is a way to convert FM

Re: FM To PowerPoint

2007-08-06 Thread Scott Abel

Kathleen:

Great suggestion. I have been doing a similar version of this
technique for years now. I have several layouts, each uses the same
set of tags. Each layout displays the tags differently -- one as a
set of slides, one as a set of slide and notes for me, the other as a
PDF of the slides. I start all of this in a Harvard Outline template
that I have customized with my tags.

This approach allows me to write my presentation in Frame, save as
PDF and I'm done. I end up with a print version, a slide show for
sharing and viewing, and a slide show with my notes in it.

Ta da! No PowerPoint required.

Auto Counters for Headings 1, 2, and 3

Hi there,

I'm trying to set up auto counters in my document with the following H1,

Is it possible to use one H1 or do I have to code the 2.1., 3.1. series
differently? The issue seems straightforward yet I can't make this work
accordingly in Frame 7.2. I would really appreciate input and other
people's experience on this.

Re: Frame 7.2 and Distiller 8.1 Crash

2007-08-06 Thread Doug
I've had this problem after upgrading to Acrobat 8.0 -- distiller always
leaves the .tps file in the directory. Frequently, the distiller job
initiated from Frame isn't successful. Sometimes, I can double-click the
.tps file and distill that successfully. It's generally cleaning up the
.tpdf, though.

Art is right, that some others posted this problem a while back. No one
ever posted a resolution. I looked briefly at Adobe's Acrobat forum, but
didn't easily find anything related.

Is there a solution to this?

I searched a bit more in the Adobe forum. It looks like this is a known
issue that won't be resolved until it's changed in FrameMaker:

On 8/3/07, Doug [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 .tpdf, though.

Art is right, that some others posted this problem a while back. No one
ever posted a resolution. I looked briefly at Adobe's Acrobat forum, but
 didn't easily find anything related.

Is there a solution to this?

I, like you, leave a trailing space. In fact, if I have an anchor - table or

side of it so it's out there, obvious, and easy to select.

Because of how my employer purchases software, we can't buy from
someone who
isn't Adobe when we buy Adobe software. It's a very frustrating
purchasing
 process.

We were hoping if we purchase 8, then it would sort of cover us on the
extra
use of the 7.2 seats in a retroactive way. We would have, in fact,
enough
seats of Frame, we just wouldn't use the 8 copies until we can bring
the
entire group forward at the same time.

I can't figure out from the EULA if this is legal or not.

I've read several discussions on this list about multiple versions of
FM runing on the same system (it works). Can multiple versions of
Acrobat also run on the same system? I recently installed Acrobat 7 on

my system (XP2) but did not uninstall Acrobat 5. Acrobat 5 now
displays an error message and closes.

From the messages below, it sounds like the answer is no for Distiller,

but what about Acrobat itself?

Thanks,

Diane

You can do it in two steps:
1. Create a character tag that changes the font.
2. Find . \p, Replace 'by pasting' with that character tag.
3. Select one of the spaces you've just converted. and Copy this space.
4. Find "text and character formats on clipboard", Replace "To text" and
leave the text box empty.

Example:"Please press ABORT to leave this funcion." Here I
would like to have a thin border around ABORT. It is very simple to
do in Word, but I have not found anything like that in FrameMaker.

Any idea?

found by search function

2007-08-06 Thread Gunnar Carlsson
Hi,
Thanks for suggestions about borders around text.

Another question: has FrameMaker something like ^& in Word, meaning
"what you found".
Extremely useful when adding text, for example "Search
for*, change to [^&]" which means that all words starting with
"for" will be in [ ].

Any idea what FrameMaker may call ^& ?

Not so simple in FrameMaker: there is no basic function that I know of for
this. An 'at insertion point' anchored frame with a solid border does it, but
you have to have a text frame inside the anchored frame, so positioning and
alignment is fiddly. SiliconPrairie's Autotext plug-in offers a quick, easy and
cheap method for inserting composite objects like this from its own menu.

I'd be interested to know if there is a more elegant solution.

border around a word?

2007-08-06 Thread Peter Gold
It is perhaps a little easier to size and position a text line inside
an "inline" anchored frame, than a text frame. You can create the text
with the text line tool (the "A" tool on the Graphics tool panel), and
drag or paste it inside an anchored frame that's set to "at insertion
point" and has been shrunk with the keystroke sequence Escape m p (tap
each key, lower case required).

You position this inline anchored frame with Alt+arrow key, and you
position the text line inside it also with Alt+arrow. To select the
text line (rather than the text characters within the anchored frame)
Ctrl+click on the text.

A similar approach could be to create a graphic and import or paste it
into a similarly-created inline anchored frame. If the point size of
the button changes in different contexts, you'd need a different
graphic for each.

Another solution is to use a key-cap font, so one character represents
the key, icon, or button. You may have to search around with Google to
find a font that meets your needs.

border around a word?

2007-08-06 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
I don't have a way to make a complete box appear around the words,
but I can and do put a line above and below the words. This gets
me most of the functionality that I am looking---i.e., the kind of
unusual/special emphasis that you are striving for, I think!

To do this, I created a character format called "Important", but
this can be anything, of course! :). I set its default font to
have an underline (specifically, the "Numeric Underline") *and*
an "Overline". See the character designer for more information.

Applying this to the words in question, gives me *most* of the
equivalent of the MS Word capability: lines above and below the
words, but not the left and right side.
