Problems with PDF

2007-09-10 Thread Tina Ricks
I'm using Frame 8.

I have a book (28 chapters) with a TOC. I'm creating a PDF using the File
Save As PDF command.

I can make a PDF of the TOC on its own. Works fine.

I can make a PDF of any file in the book.

If I take the TOC out of the book, I can make a PDF of the whole book.

If I put the TOC in the book, I get this message in the log file where the
TOC starts:

%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: pdfmark; ErrorInfo: Rect ]%%

(Then a whole lot of other undecipherable stuff in the log file that I can
include if anyone thinks it's relevant).

Any ideas?

structured Frame

2007-09-10 Thread Miriam Boral

Hello Everyone,

I'm the sole tech writer for a very small company, but we have a
large suite of documentation. I'm beginning to teach myself
structured Frame both because I feel it's the way of the future (and
therefore worth learning) and also to explore how it might (or might
not) be beneficial to the company I work for. I'm interested in
hearing from others about their experience working with it and how
they feel it benefits their work.

Thanks very much.

Re: Importing PPT slideshows

2007-09-10 Thread Madeleine Reardon Dimond
The best option seems to be to make a pdf from
PowerPoint and import by reference. (Because I haven't
had any trouble making landscape pdfs, I don't expect
to have to crop.)

If things change, I'll make a new pdf, which I assume
will update automatically. So it's not as easy as I'd
like, but what are you going to do with Microsoft?

My experience with converting Word docs is the
graphics (if they come in) come in as embedded, not by
reference.

They are also constantly updating the content in
 both the slides and the

Creating the PDFs and cropping them each time

I've also done some OLE with PPT and Frame, but it
 made the file load very

PP does not seem to behave well when it comes to
 printing. My solution
would be to print to file full width (Letter/A4 -
 sadly printing will
not (Office 2003) print landscape) and then crop top

pages. After that FM should be able to import by

Any other ideas would be interesting to hear.

RE: Keyboard shortcuts stop working

2007-09-10 Thread Sam Beard
Diane,

Thanks for responding on this issue. I've written in about the same
problem, along with a problem with the arrow keys not working when held
down continuously. The arrow keys work when pressed repeatedly, but not
if held down continuously. A couple of others have responded with
comments about certain programs installed or third-party extensions to
Frame installed, but none of those apply as I don't have the listed
applications installed, nor do I have any third-party Frame extensions
installed.
I'm looking in the Regional and Language Options control panel and
checking all of the things there I can deduce from your post, but none
of those seem to apply to my situation, either. I recently changed my
display settings that control the appearance of the windows (I don't
recall if I had it changed to my personal preferences when I've had this
issue before or not, so thought I'd try it. I have to switch to a
different one at times for screen captures.), so we'll see if this has
any effect on it.
Last week, I had an interesting development with it. I was working on
editing a document and it started happening again. Before I restarted
Frame, I wanted to finish the updates I was working on. I paged up and
found an anchored frame with an image in it, along with some lines and
text boxes for callouts. I remembered reading that you can press Control
and click on an element like a text box without switching tools, so I
did that and it worked! I moved the elements using the Alt key and arrow
keys and that worked, as well. When I clicked out of the anchored frame
and tried using the arrow keys, as well as things like Control-A,
Control-V, etc, they all worked, as well! I have NO IDEA why this
behavior happened, but, so far, it hasn't happened again.
I'd certainly like to resolve this issue, if possible, as it is
rather a PITA to have to restart Frame when it happens!

Hi Rick,

I have had the same thing happen, but also in other apps. The keyboard
gets remapped to another language, usually Spanish. I turned off the
language settings in the control panel and have not had it happen since.

The keyboard shortcut to switch languages was set to Left Alt Shift and
I apparently was hitting those keys without realizing it. Next time it
happens, try that key combination and see if it switches back. If not,
click Settings Control Panel Regional and Language Settings Details
and turn off all the languages except English.

all

 stop

Is this a known bug? Has anyone had the same problem before? In which

I have experienced the same thing. I use the Alt key a lot to activate
menu choices. In Framemaker, that can make for inadvertent language
changes when trying to activate the Shift menus -- to get File Save
All Open Files, or Graphics Pick Up Object Properties, for example.

Photoshop is prone to the same problem, as the Shift and Alt keys are
used in many shortcuts. I've just come to expect it from time to time,
and am no longer surprised when my dialog box entries suddenly appear in
Cyrillic :-)

Powerpoint will export to quite a number of formats, including .jpg,

and saves as Slide1.png, Slide2.png, etc.

You could import these files by reference into FM (without the need for
cropping), and updates would be transparent as long as the number/order
of slides isn't changed. If they do muck about with inserting/deleting
slides, you'd have a problem -- but that would be true in any
application that imports by reference.

I have on several occasions in the last year or so complained about

FM 8 Integration with Webworks

2007-09-10 Thread Stephen C. Gillespie Sr
Greetings!

We are all excited about the new FM 8, and I am the first on my team to get
the upgrade.

My problem is, when I try to open and run my old (FM 7.2) WWP 8 Standard
project, I get a communication error: The application is unable to
communicate with FrameMaker. FrameMaker was unable to generate the specified
MIF file.

Before installing FM 8, I Uninstalled FM 7.2.

Then when I got the error, I Uninstalled Webworks 8, and re-installed it -
made no diff.

Does anybody know the solution? - I looked at the FM 8 maker.ini, and there
is no API for Webworks.

Thank you.

Fwd: FW: Dictionary doesn't find smart quotes

2007-09-10 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Sheila:

I'm not sure I understand your description. In the Spelling Checker
Options, you can enable or disable straight quotes as an error when checking
spelling. However, there's no way to detect curly quotes in the Options
dialog box.

You can find and change them with Edit Find/Change. In the Find Text box,
type the code \` (backslash prime - on the tilde key) to find left curly
quotes, and \' (backslash apostrophe) to find right curly quotes. In FM,
there's no way to replace both in one operation, so you'll need to make one
pass for each replacement. You can replace across a book.

ASIDE:

Would you mind describing how you converted Quicksilver (which release) to
FM? Thanks!

RE: structured Frame

2007-09-10 Thread Fred Ridder

Since nobody else has chimed in on this one, let me offer a few
comments.

It seems to me that the big advantages of structured authoring
fall into a few general areas:
-enhanced ability to publish content in different forms
  (definition A of single sourcing)
-enhanced ability to reuse content in different contexts
  (definition B of single sourcing)
-reduced translation costs from direct reuse of existing
  translated content modules
-more consistent organization of information across different
  documents
-more consistent organization of content written by different
  writers
-more consistent presentation of similar information types
-content is (theoretically) portable across a range of different
  structured authoring/editing/publishing tools (i.e. you're
not locked into a proprietary file format)

For a lone writer, unless you have a significant requirement for
single sourcing (under either or both definitions of the term),
or have your documents translated into a lot of languages,
the return on investment for migrating to a structured
documentation environment is likely to be rather small.

The big payoffs from a financial standpoint (the key ingredient
of the business case for converting) stem from the reuse of
content. This is a direct, demonstrable, quanitifiable benefit.

From an internal organizational standpoint, the big benefits are

the ability to avoid editing the same information multiple times
in multiple source files for multiple deliverables, and the enahnced
ability to use content from multiple writers. Both of these can
yield improvements in productivity, but the improvements are
much larger in departments with multiple writers. This is a
direct benefit that can be hard to quantify, and which will not
be apparent immeidately because productivity often falls off
for months while writers become comfortable with the new
tools and new way they have to approach their work.

The big payoff from the customer's standpoint is the improved
consistency and predictability that comes from adherence to
a defined document structure. There may also be a long-term
benefit in faster development/update cycles for documentation.
In the long run, the customer benefits may be the biggest
payoff, but because they are an indirect benefit they are very
hard to quantify.

Because it can take so long before the advantages of
implementing structured authoring are obvious, it's
important to get a commitment from management that has
a long enough term to get you over the hump. There have
been many cases where the setup/conversion costs and
initial reduction in productivity has caused management to
pull the plug before the tipping point is reached. One
useful strategy to avoid this is to do a small, *non-critical*
project as a pilot so that you can demonstrate feasability
before asking for a longer-term commitment to a full rollout.

I'm the sole tech writer for a very small company, but we have a large

because I feel it's the way of the future (and therefore worth learning)

RE: problem install framemaker 8 trial version

2007-09-10 Thread menchin_elaine
After three calls to tech support, the issue is resolved. The trial
version of Adobe FrameMaker 8 is not supported on Windows 2000. This is
noted in small print in the system requirements - my bad! Although I
was misled by the first two tech support representatives I spoke with -
you certainly can run Frame 8 trial on the same system with Frame 7.

-- Original message --
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm attempting to download and install the free trial version
of
Framemaker 8 from the Adobe website. It downloads fine but
during the
install process I am asked for a serial number. I don't have
one since
this is a trial version. The Adobe support person I contacted
first
suggested re-downloading the sw (didn't help, the same thing
happened),
then said that I cannot run the trial of Frame 8 without first
removing
Frame 7 from my system. This isn't an option; we do our
documentation
work in Frame 7 here. I just wanted to evaluate Frame 8's
conditional
text features to see if we want to upgrade. Does this ring
true - do I
really need to remove Frame 7 to evaluate Frame 8?

Thanks for that. It seems like the best option, as PPT saves out every slide

Powerpoint will export to quite a number of formats, including .jpg,
gif, and .png. It creates a folder named the same as the .ppt file,
and saves as Slide1.png, Slide2.png, etc.

You could import these files by reference into FM (without the need for
cropping), and updates would be transparent as long as the number/order
of slides isn't changed. If they do muck about with inserting/deleting
slides, you'd have a problem -- but that would be true in any
application that imports by reference.

One workaround for this FM8.0-specific bug is to turn Tagged PDF on; see

Keyboard shortcuts stop working

If not,
click Settings >Control Panel > Regional and Language Settings > Details
and turn off all the languages except English.

I have experienced the same thing. I use the Alt key a lot to activate
menu choices. In Framemaker, that can make for inadvertent language
changes when trying to activate the Shift menus -- to get File > Save
All Open Files, or Graphics > Pick Up Object Properties, for example.

Photoshop is prone to the same problem, as the Shift and Alt keys are
used in many shortcuts. I've just come to expect it from time to time,
and am no longer surprised when my dialog box entries suddenly appear in
Cyrillic :-)

and setting tags for only some three elements (structured), and now

Fwd: FW: Dictionary doesn't find smart quotes

2007-09-10 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Sheila:

I'm not sure I understand your description. In the Spelling Checker >
Options, you can enable or disable straight quotes as an error when checking
spelling. However, there's no way to detect curly quotes in the Options
dialog box.

You can find and change them with Edit > Find/Change.

ASIDE:

Would you mind describing how you converted Quicksilver (which release) to
FM? Thanks!

Greetings!

We are all excited about the new FM 8, and I am the first on my team to get

My problem is, when I try to open and run my old (FM 7.2) WWP 8 Standard

Before installing FM 8, I Uninstalled FM 7.2.

Then when I got the error, I Uninstalled Webworks 8, and re-installed it -
made no diff.

Does anybody know the solution? - I looked at the FM 8 maker.ini, and there

structured Frame

2007-09-10 Thread Fred Ridder
Since nobody else has chimed in on this one, let me offer a few
comments.

It seems to me that the big advantages of structured authoring
fall into a few general areas:
-enhanced ability to publish content in different forms
   (definition A of "single sourcing")
-enhanced ability to reuse content in different contexts
   (definition B of "single sourcing")

OmniHelp. My intern is having a blast with Mif2Go; he finds it much
easier to work with than ePublisher was with FM7.2.

Subject: FM 8 Integration with Webworks

Greetings!

We are all excited about the new FM 8, and I am the first on my team to
get the upgrade.

My problem is, when I try to open and run my old (FM 7.2) WWP 8 Standard
project, I get a communication error: "The application is unable to
communicate with FrameMaker. FrameMaker was unable to generate the
specified MIF file."

Before installing FM 8, I Uninstalled FM 7.2.

Then when I got the error, I Uninstalled Webworks 8, and re-installed it
- made no diff.

Does anybody know the solution? - I looked at the FM 8 maker.ini, and
there is no API for Webworks.

Thank you.

problem install framemaker 8 trial version

2007-09-10 Thread menchin_ela...@emc.com
After three calls to tech support, the issue is resolved. The trial
version of Adobe FrameMaker 8 is not supported on Windows 2000. This is
noted in small print in the system requirements - my bad! Although I
was misled by the first two tech support representatives I spoke with -
you certainly can run Frame 8 trial on the same system with Frame 7.

Importing PPT slideshows

2007-09-10 Thread Linda G. Gallagher
Stuart,

Thanks for that. It seems like the best option, as PPT saves out every slide
fairly quickly and automatically overwrites the existing files.
