Re: searching for article in front of a variable

Frame 7.2
I have a variable (government ministry of health shortform) that affects
the
article in front of it. Each province has a different shortform. When I
change the variable, the article may be affected.

For example, in the Ontario doc, it's an MOH bill, while in New
Brunswick,
it should be a DHW bill.

Is there any way to search for a var name or an var name, or do I
have to just search for all instances of that variable to check the article
in front of it?

Thanks,

Laurie Little
Words That Work

I have the same situation in one of my file sets. I use two variables named
article (used most of the time, when the article should be lowercase) and
Article (used when the article starts a sentence or heading). The Frame
file would read article var name instead of a var name or an
var name. My template documents define the articles correctly for the
definition of the variables and all are imported at the same time when I
change from one output to another.

Hope this helps,

Beverly Robinson

For the record, although I agree that FM is far and away the more
professional and versatile tool for extended publications, I have been
won over to MS Word's ribbon. I also used to think of it as unintuitive
- but after watching the video below and studying their UI design, I
think that the steep learning curve and alternate way of thinking are
the rough part, but after you learn to think of the tools visually
rather than textually, the ribbon becomes more powerful than the older
menus, and intuitive. Some will say that if you need a video or other
training to understand the ribbon, it is not intuitive; rather, I think
that we can use a video, training, or working with the ribbon long
enough to shift our thinking from primarily textual to primarily visual.
As a mac user first and always (when not at work), I still applaud MS
for thinking outside the box on this one.

just
adds to the time. Finding a command that was once one click, maybe two
clicks at most is now three to four, if it's even where you would
expect to
find it, is the norm with this blasted ribbon.

I'd suggest making a second variable that contains both the article and
the abbreviation (e.g. an MOH or a DHW). Even if you still to have
to hunt down existing instances one at a time, you can then replace them
with the new variable, and it'll be the last time you ever have to do
it.

Re: (Slightly OT) Any up to date comparisons of Word and Frame

2009-04-10 Thread quills
For the effort they put into redesigning their user interface, I would
have massively preferred that they hold off on the eye candy and
addressed more fundamental problems with the application. However, as a
user, what I prefer isn't what Microsoft normally listens to. All of
that work could have been applied to revamping the way numbering works,
or how they apply styles, or how their multi-file function doesn't work.
Or on stabalizing the program for large files.

They didn't. So I am not particularly inclined to congratulate them for
making all the eye candy, and in the process making it more difficult to
use.

Your opinion and mine are diametrically opposed. I think that you will
find the camps firmly established and have little cross-over.

I think it's also telling that corporations don't normally train you on
New GUI in an app. IT tosses it over the fence and the user has to
cope on their own without much support at all, and little documentation.

This video isn't useful to most users. It isn't available to most users.

I think that what he comments on in I can't figure out how to use it.
indicates that it is documented poorly.

Which falls on the common comment about Microsoft documentation.
Technically correct, but totally useless.

Import MS Word index markers into Framemaker?

2009-04-10 Thread Leonard Anderson
[also posted to comp.text.frame on Usenet, which seems to be very inactive]

Hi all,

I need to import a book, created using MS Word, into Framemaker.
Mostly this works fine, but there are problems importing the index
markers created by the author using Word. Importing simple markers
goes fine, but I have the problems listed below. (The first of these
is the most serious problem.)

1. Range index markers (e.g., "some item, pages 12-17") created using
Word's facility to create a range index based on a bookmark, don't
import correctly. The problem is that when I create the index in FM,
all that is created is a single page reference (looks like it
corresponds to the actual page where the index marker was placed in
Word), rather than a range reference. Is there a way to import MS Word
range index markers into FM?

2. In some of the MS Word index entries, fonts and italicization are
applied to the index entry text. (In MS Word, I mean that the text
"some_term" in an index entry of the form { "some_term" } may be,
e.g., italicized, or be set in a monospace font. When Word creates an
index from these markers, the font and italicization are preserved in
the index, but when the document is imported in FM, these text
attributes are lost when FM creates the index. ?Is there a way of
getting FM to preserve these text attributes of the index during an
import?

3. In some of the MS Word index entries, boldfacing and italicization
are applied to the page numbering format. (In MS Word, I mean that the
index entry has, e.g., the form { "some_term" \b } or { "some_term" \b
\i }. When Word creates an index from these markers, the page numbers
are italicized and/or boldfaced, but when the document is imported in
FM, these formatting attributes are lost when FM creates the index. Is
there a way of getting FM to preserve these formatting attributes of
the index page numbers during an import?

Software versions: MS Word 2000, Framemaker 7.2.

Can anyone help with these problems, especially the first?

Thanks.

Frame 7.2
I have a variable (government ministry of health shortform) that affects
the
article in front of it. Each province has a different shortform. When I
change the variable, the article may be affected.

For example, in the Ontario doc, it's "an MOH bill", while in New
Brunswick,
it should be "a DHW bill".

Is there any way to search for "a " or "an ", or do I
have to just search for all instances of that variable to check the article
in front of it?

Thanks,

Laurie Little

I have the same situation in one of my file sets. I use two variables named
"article" (used most of the time, when the article should be lowercase) and
"Article" (used when the article starts a sentence or heading). The Frame
file would read " " instead of "a " or "an
". My template documents define the articles correctly for the
definition of the variables and all are imported at the same time when I
change from one output to another.

Hope this helps,

Beverly Robinson

If the form name always appears with appropriate article, would it
suffice to define the variable with the article and the form name, as:

"a DHW " or "an MOH "?

And if you go with Peter's suggestion ...

The writer might have instances for saying "the DHW" and "the MOH," so this
could warrant two more variables to address the need for "the ..."

searching for article in front of a variable

2009-04-10 Thread Fred Ridder

The definite article doesn't change depending on the first letter of the
name/acronym so there's no need to include it in the variable definition. Just
define a "naked" variable to use wherever there is no article or a definite
article or some other adjective.

But it is true that you probably would need to define *two* variables that
include the indefinite article because you'll most lkely need both capped and
lower-case variants.

Excellent! IMHO, this is clearly the best solution. Thank you for

I'd suggest making a second variable that contains both the article and
the abbreviation (e.g. "an MOH" or "a DHW"). Even if you still to have
to hunt down existing instances one at a time, you can then replace them
with the new variable, and it'll be the last time you ever have to do
it.

(Slightly OT) Any up to date comparisons of Word and Frame

2009-04-10 Thread qui...@airmail.net
I think it's also telling that corporations don't normally train you on
"New" GUI in an app. IT tosses it over the fence and the user has to
cope on their own without much support at all, and little documentation.

This video isn't useful to most users. It isn't available to most users.

I think that what he comments on in "I can't figure out how to use it."
indicates that it is documented poorly.

Which falls on the common comment about Microsoft documentation.
"Technically correct, but totally useless."

OT: Older Version Corel Files

2009-04-10 Thread J. Paul Kent
I'm trying to open a couple of files I used to record the names of my roses
when I planted them back in 94.

I no longer have a copy of Corel, so I downloaded the trial, but when I try
to open them, I get an error message:

Attempting to open Version 1.x or 2.x file. This file format is not
supported. Please access the Readme file for additional information.

Does anyone have an older copy of Corel that could be used to open these and
save up to a version that I can open with CorelDRAW X4 Demo version I just
installed?

If so, or if you have any other ideas, please contact me off list (I'm on
digest) and I'll send them to you.

Thanks in advance,
