OT: capturing graphical user interfaces on LCD panels

2010-05-06 Thread Christopher Seal

When writing user guides for PC or Mac software applications I can capture
screen shots with no problem.

I have to write user guides for stand-alone terminals that use a pair of
Samsung 4.8-in LCD 1024x600 panels p/n LMS480JC01 for their MMI.

Any suggestions on how to capture the user interface?

Some thoughts:

Photography? cannot because cameras are forbidden where I work.

Redraw in Visio? Lots of screens, would take a long time.

Add-on device, like a box with an input connector that can be clipped on to the
LCD connector, a USB output to a computer, and a software application. I've
done lots of searching and haven't found such as beast.

Hi Doug...

Got your files, but unfortunately I've been unable to open them in FM4.
When I try I'm told that they are damaged. I tried using a heroic open,

I suppose that it *is* possible that these files are in fact corrupt.
When I open them in a text editor, they have the basic chunks of stuff

MIF File Import

2010-05-06 Thread KChebe Grace
I am currently using a MIF file to make changes to a book. I want the file to
change some of my paragraph styles to small font and the color to white. At a
later point I want to have the mif file change some of my variable settings.
This would allow me to make one set of files work for multiple locations by
importing a different mif file.

The problem that I have is that when I import the mif file, which now only
contains the code to change paragraph styles is overwriting the existing
variables in the book.

It is my understanding that I should be able to keep the mif file as small as
possible and use it to only have code to change the things that I want to
change without having to account for parameters that are not being changed.

Can someone provide some assistance as to why this mif file is behaving this
way?

I came late to the conversation, but sorry to say your files are
probably corrupt.

I recall opening FM3 files with FM5.5, and I'm pretty sure those opens
even worked with FM7. (Only had a second to look on our main system
here just now; found some 16 year old FM4 files that open fine in 7.2;
I know we have FM2.1 and FM3 files out on optical media somewhere but
did not enough time to go look at the moment).

Frame has historically been fairly good about cleanly opening
old version files with newer version FM, even skipping several
generations, so that probably wasn't an issue in your case.

The side-topic question I have (given that we're in the middle of
trying find the best passive solution for long-term *reliable*
storage of data) is how were these files stored? Optical media? (If
so, what flavor?) Harddrives? Tape? (What flavor?)

Did you have any initial difficulty copying those files from that
original media?

Thanks for any data points; that's mainly what we're collecting at the
moment.

Sorry to hear about the data loss. We all dread that!

One possibility I recall. Frame binary files
must end at a 1K boundary. When they were sent
via email, they often got a CR/LF added to the
end, and then Frame would no longer touch them.

We wrote a little utility that trimmed off anything
after the last 1K boundary that fixed this. So if
the file was 2050 bytes, it truncated it to 2048.

If the exact byte sizes are not a multiple of 1024,
let me know and I'll see if I can find that utility
someplace. Or you could do it with a binary editor.

Re: MIF File Import

2010-05-06 Thread Steve Johnson
You're going to have to script it. A MIF file is a text representation
of a Frame file.

Instead of importing the MIF file you'll probably need to write a
script that will remove the formatting in the MIF file with your
content and replace the formatting as desired. Someone can probably
point you to a utility that will do this.

I've started to do something similar in FrameScript, not too easy.

Re: MIF File Import

2010-05-06 Thread Mike
I have had the same problem in the past. From my experience, saving a MIF
file from within Frame can be the culprit. In my case, I created the MIF
files in an ASCII editor and included only those items that I wanted to
import. I opened the MIF text file in Frame and imported. Everything worked
well. However, if I saved the MIF file from within Frame, Frame
automatically added a lot of default system variables to the saved MIF
file. My specific problem involved overwriting running headers and footers
with the internal values in Frame.

My solution: I create the MIF file in an ASCII editor and open it with
Frame. I then perform the import. Here is the key (at least for me): close
the MIF file WITHOUT saving it. As long as I open the file, use it, then
close it without saving, everything works as I want.

Hopefully, it will help you.

Mike

Migrating from RoboHelp to WebWorks

I would recommend posting this on the WebWorks user forum:

Can someone provide some assistance as to why this mif file is behaving this
way?

FrameMaker 3 files

I came late to the conversation, but sorry to say your files are
probably corrupt.

I recall opening FM3 files with FM5.5, and I'm pretty sure those opens
even worked with FM7. (Only had a second to look on our main system
here just now; found some 16 year old FM4 files that open fine in 7.2;
I know we have FM2.1 and FM3 files out on optical media somewhere but
did not enough time to go look at the moment).

Frame has historically been fairly good about cleanly opening
old version files with newer version FM, even skipping several
generations, so that probably wasn't an issue in your case.

The side-topic question I have (given that we're in the middle of
trying find the best "passive" solution for long-term *reliable*
storage of data) is how were these files stored? Optical media? (If
so, what flavor?) Harddrives? Tape? (What flavor?)

Did you have any initial difficulty copying those files from that
original media?

Thanks for any data points; that's mainly what we're collecting at the
moment.

Sorry to hear about the data loss. We all dread that!

FrameMaker 3 files

One possibility I recall. Frame binary files
must end at a 1K boundary. When they were sent
via email, they often got a CR/LF added to the
end, and then Frame would no longer touch them.

We wrote a little utility that trimmed off anything
after the last 1K boundary that fixed this. So if
the file was 2050 bytes, it truncated it to 2048.

If the exact byte sizes are not a multiple of 1024,
let me know and I'll see if I can find that utility
someplace. Or you could do it with a binary editor.

MIF File Import

2010-05-06 Thread Steve Johnson
You're going to have to script it. A MIF file is a text representation
of a Frame file.

Instead of importing the MIF file you'll probably need to write a
script that will remove the formatting in the MIF file with your
content and replace the formatting as desired. Someone can probably
point you to a utility that will do this.

I've started to do something similar in FrameScript, not too easy.

MIF File Import

2010-05-06 Thread Mike
I have had the same problem in the past. From my experience, saving a MIF
file from within Frame can be the culprit. In my case, I created the MIF
files in an ASCII editor and included only those items that I wanted to
import. I opened the MIF text file in Frame and imported. Everything worked
well. However, if I saved the MIF file from within Frame, Frame
automatically added a lot of default "system" variables to the saved MIF

Mike
