Clearly we have a great range of international English expertise on this group: 
the thought of a collaborative dictionary of phraseology comes to mind. It 
would be very useful for those like me who often have to work in another 
English dialect: what to say, what not to say. 

Many years ago I was slightly involved in a European collaborative project to 
research how software could be designed for easy localisation, and there are a 
great many more pitfalls than one might imagine.

I cannot resist a little levity for a Friday. My favourite story was about the 
Jamaican gentleman living in London who addressed his electricity bill only to 
'Degenerate Bawd'. Allegedly it was correctly delivered.

 Boolean expressions can allow us to merge Canadian and domestic versions.  
 Unfortunately I am getting an invalid expression when I try to set up the 
 situation I would need.  This is not even attempting proper syntax -- is it 
 possible to do this in unstructured FM9?
 
 (Canada and Brand1) but not (Brand2, Brand3...BrandX, or Domestic)
 
 Likewise, I would also do the same in reverse -- Domestic, not Canadian.

I've seen this error and do not use Franklin Gothic Demi, so I don't 
think it's specific to that font. I've also encountered it in paragraphs 
that have no overrides or character styles applied at all.


It seems like the spell checker makes the assumption that your most 
likely error is omitted spaces, if it can find any smaller words in your 
misspelled word. If the assumption were instead that your most likely 
mistake was to have misspelled a single word, the first suggestion would 
more often be correct.

Quarterly. Han has worked as an editor for State Farm Insurance, as a
technical writer for the Laboratory for Integrated Learning and

received numerous grants and awards for her research and teaching.

Gerald Savage, Professor, English Department, Illinois State University.
Jerry's research focuses on the ethics and politics of technical
communication, workplace practices, and issues of social justice in
international technical communication. His work has appeared in
Technical Communication Quarterly, Journal of Technical Writing and
Communication, Journal of Business and Technical Writing, and as
chapters in a number of essay collections. He is co-editor with Dale

I've opened a couple old Frame docs V7.2, V8, and V9 and just gone looking
for a specific phrase that I knew a word was misspelled. Found it in V7.2,
and V8, Flew right past it and found no misspelled words in V9. Same thing
with searching for a number sequence in Find/Change. I know it's there, I
can see it, but Frame can't seem to find it. If Spell Checker can't see it,
and Find/Change can't find it, I'm finding myself doing a lot of proofing.
To the positive side of all this, I've found a lot of sentences that clearly
needed more clarification and/or could be better written. Now a quick
proof-read turns into a lengthy re-write.

files in the book are not using the modified numbering formats,
so you get what they *are* using, the old one.  In that case,
you will need to change your workflow a little:

1. Copy the Frame book and chapter files to another dir as
a backup.

2. Manually import the conversion template to the whole book,
and manually update xrefs from the book.  Remove the reference
to the conversion template from your mif2htm.ini.

3. Run the conversion.

4. Copy the backup files back over the working set to restore
your numbering for other uses.

So if I only have one file in my book file, doesn't matter which,
the x-refs are updated correctly, but if I have more than one file,
the x-refs are not updated correctly. Any suggestions?

See if that works.  We haven't run into this before because
you are the first we know of to change the content the xref
is getting in the other files as part of conversion.  Most
people just change the xref format, and that works fine.  I
suspect this issue is because you're changing the numbering
properties too.

Very good!  We may add a more automated way of doing it
in our next release, which we've been working on for the
last year and which is almost ready.

It would require more memory, so it would be optional.
We would have to open all files in the book at once
(and some of our customers have over a thousand), then

make all the .mif, close all the .fm files, and continue

No idea.  We haven't changed our basic processing rules
for some years now, and doing one chapter at a time,
with the rest still using the *previous* numbering
formats, it's hard to see how it ever worked as you
wanted.  At update, when Frame gets the xref content
from the referenced files, it would always see the old
numbering.  Even if it cached the previously-processed
files after their template import and used those images,
it would still get the old formats for the following
files.  So at least some of the inter-file xrefs would
have used the old numbering.

If you are talking about xrefs *within* the same file,
a possible explanation could be a difference in Frame's
caching rules from 7 to 9.  It could be that in FM9,
the xref content as it was *before* the template import
is cached; then if the cache were not flushed when the
template is imported (as it should be), your update would 
get the old values.  Perhaps importing the template to 
the book forced a cache flush.  But this is speculation;
the bottom line is, now you have a way to proceed that
works.

Editing variables in FM9

applying.  In FM9 it seems I have to edit one at a time.  
What am I missing?

I was very pleased that the Adobe engineers were interested in my problem with 
the spelling checker not finding obviously misspelled words. Amit Agarwal and I 
traded several emails and files, and he found the reason and a fix. 
Co-incidentally, William's suggestion landed in my email box today as well.

Apparently character tags can be set to None for language, which makes the 
spelling checker skip the rest of the paragraph, even if it doesn't use that 
tag. Here's is Amit's workaround, which worked for me.  I'm glad to know the 
spelling checker isn't just batty. (Except for the corrections suggestions.)

THE STEPS I DID TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM:
• Click in the document
• Find panel → Select find Character Format
• Press Shift + F8 key to make it As Is
• Select Language=None
• In Change → Select Character Format
• Press Shift + F8 key to make it As Is
• Select Language=US English
• Click Change All
• Spell Check again, Spell Checker should find the misspelled word.

In my file, I had a character tag used for run-in heads that was not set to US 
English. I had never really noticed that you can apply language to a character 
tag. I know now!

Anyway, thanks to all of you, and thanks to Amit who stuck with it until he 
figured it out. It does seem to be a bug that the spelling checker skips the 
rest of the paragraph. The misspelled word definitely carried a character 
format that was set to US English.

As a FrameMaker Geezer, this should have tripped a little bell in 
the back of my head. D'oh!


Language NONE behavior with the spell checker is actually a handy 
feature. You can set code examples this way so as to avoid a lot of 
busy work when the spell checker walks through snippets of example 
programming code that might be in your docs.

I'm not sure I would call it fixed. It's still a bug that the tag makes the 
spelling checker miss errors in the rest of the paragraph. In my case, the rest 
of the paragraph contained text formatted as Default Font.

I'm just happy I have a workaround and pleased that Adobe cared enough to 
respond.

THE STEPS I DID TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM:
• Click in the document
• Find panel → Select find Character Format
• Press Shift + F8 key to make it As Is
• Select Language=None
• In Change → Select Character Format
• Press Shift + F8 key to make it As Is
• Select Language=US English
• Click Change All
• Spell Check again, Spell Checker should find the misspelled word.



Well, darn. I thought I'd try that procedure, just to see if I had any 
character formats set to language of None that I might want to change. 
Unfortunately, FM9 finds _everything in the document_ when I set the 
language to None. It skips around the document finding blocks as short as 
one line or as long as several pages, until it has found everything in the 
document.


It seems that something else is very wrong.

You had better luck than I did.

I thought I'd try it on a book. I did Change All, waited about forever, then 
had to CTRL-ALT-DEL to get out. 

Then I tried it on just a chapter. Same result. Am rebooting everything.

This procedure worked great in a very, very small file--maybe 4 paragraphs. 
That was the file Amit was working with. 

Darn! I thought I had it.

Solved: Empty pages not deleting and The new column layout in docname seems to overlap other objects

Aha!  I just figured something out.  In case anyone else encounters this ...

I was having problems with empty pages not being removed at the end of my
document when I changed which conditional tags were visible. I ran through
the usual suspects (e.g. checking what page number the next document in the
book was set to) but nothing worked.

Then I read an Adobe knowledge base article (
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/314/314928.html) that recommended reapplying the
left/right master pages.  But when I chose Format  Page Layout  Master
Page Layout to do that, I got the puzzling warning The new column layout in
doucment.fm seems to overlap other objects on some body pages. Are you sure
you want to do this?

I wasn't sure what that was trying to tell me, since I only have one column
and a simple page layout.  What was overlapping what? But eventually I got
the idea of putting the insertion point outside the text frame (by clicking
in the margin) and doing CTRL+A to select all.  And lo and behold, there
were some empty graphic objects scattered around on various pages.  When I
deleted them, everything worked again. My empty pages are now deleted as
specified in Format  Page Layout  Pagination  Before Saving and Printing.

One more small step to world domination through FrameMaker.

Clearly we have a great range of international English expertise on this group: 
the thought of a collaborative dictionary of phraseology comes to mind. It 
would be very useful for those like me who often have to work in another 
English dialect: what to say, what not to say. 

Many years ago I was slightly involved in a European collaborative project to 
research how software could be designed for easy localisation, and there are a 
great many more pitfalls than one might imagine.

I cannot resist a little levity for a Friday. My favourite story was about the 
Jamaican gentleman living in London who addressed his electricity bill only to 
'Degenerate Bawd'. Allegedly it was correctly delivered.

Can the spelling checker be trusted?

I've opened a couple old Frame docs V7.2, V8, and V9 and just gone looking
for a specific phrase that I knew a word was misspelled. Found it in V7.2,
and V8, Flew right past it and found no misspelled words in V9. Same thing
with searching for a number sequence in Find/Change. I know it's there, I
can see it, but Frame can't seem to find it. If Spell Checker can't see it,
and Find/Change can't find it, I'm finding myself doing a lot of proofing.
To the positive side of all this, I've found a lot of sentences that clearly
needed more clarification and/or could be better written. Now a quick
proof-read turns into a lengthy re-write.

That's why we need to ask you to prepare the test case... the
process often reveals an issue you can fix on the spot.

Does the same thing happen with two files if you do it by hand?
Try making a book with two copies of your short test case; does
that work?  We import the conversion template to each file
individually, because you may want to use different templates
for different files.

Are the xrefs that are not working as desired to targets in
the same file, or in different files?  Maybe the problem is
that when you convert one file and update xrefs, the *other*
files in the book are not using the modified numbering formats,
so you get what they *are* using, the old one.  In that case,
you will need to change your workflow a little:

1. Copy the Frame book and chapter files to another dir as
a backup.

2. Manually import the conversion template to the whole book,
and manually update xrefs from the book.  Remove the reference
to the conversion template from your mif2htm.ini.

3. Run the conversion.

4. Copy the backup files back over the working set to restore
your numbering for other uses.

See if that works.  We haven't run into this before because
you are the first we know of to change the content the xref
is getting in the other files as part of conversion.  Most
people just change the xref format, and that works fine.  I
suspect this issue is because you're changing the numbering
properties too.

Very good!  We may add a more automated way of doing it
in our next release, which we've been working on for the
last year and which is almost ready.

It would require more memory, so it would be optional.
We would have to open all files in the book at once
(and some of our customers have over a thousand), then
import the conversion template to the book in one step,
then update all the files.  All without saving.  Then
make all the .mif, close all the .fm files, and continue
with the conversion process.  Not hard at all to program,
but might be a lot slower and would definitely be much
more demanding of memory.

No idea.  We haven't changed our basic processing rules
for some years now, and doing one chapter at a time,
with the rest still using the *previous* numbering
formats, it's hard to see how it ever worked as you
wanted.  At update, when Frame gets the xref content
from the referenced files, it would always see the old
numbering.  Even if it cached the previously-processed
files after their template import and used those images,
it would still get the old formats for the following
files.  So at least some of the inter-file xrefs would
have used the old numbering.

If you are talking about xrefs *within* the same file,
a possible explanation could be a difference in Frame's
caching rules from 7 to 9.  It could be that in FM9,
the xref content as it was *before* the template import
is cached; then if the cache were not flushed when the
template is imported (as it should be), your update would 
get the old values.  Perhaps importing the template to 
the book forced a cache flush.  But this is speculation;
the bottom line is, now you have a way to proceed that
works.

Editing variables in FM9

applying.  In FM9 it seems I have to edit one at a time.

I was very pleased that the Adobe engineers were interested in my problem with 
the spelling checker not finding obviously misspelled words. Amit Agarwal and I 
traded several emails and files, and he found the reason and a fix. 
Co-incidentally, William's suggestion landed in my email box today as well.

Apparently character tags can be set to None for language, which makes the 
spelling checker skip the rest of the paragraph, even if it doesn't use that 
tag. Here's is Amit's workaround, which worked for me.  I'm glad to know the 
spelling checker isn't just batty. (Except for the corrections suggestions.)

Can the spelling checker be trusted? Yes!

Well, darn. I thought I'd try that procedure, just to see if I had any 
character formats set to language of None that I might want to change. 
Unfortunately, FM9 finds _everything in the document_ when I set the 
language to None. It skips around the document finding blocks as short as 
one line or as long as several pages, until it has found everything in the 
document.

It seems that something else is very wrong.

Solved: Empty pages not deleting and "The new column layout in seems to overlap other objects"

Aha!  I just figured something out.  In case anyone else encounters this ...

I was having problems with empty pages not being removed at the end of my
document when I changed which conditional tags were visible. I ran through
the usual suspects (e.g. checking what page number the next document in the
book was set to) but nothing worked.

Then I read an Adobe knowledge base article (
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/314/314928.html) that recommended reapplying the
left/right master pages.  But when I chose Format > Page Layout > Master
Page Layout to do that, I got the puzzling warning "The new column layout in
doucment.fm seems to overlap other objects on some body pages. Are you sure
you want to do this?"

I wasn't sure what that was trying to tell me, since I only have one column
and a simple page layout.  What was overlapping what? But eventually I got
the idea of putting the insertion point outside the text frame (by clicking
in the margin) and doing CTRL+A to select all.  And lo and behold, there
were some empty graphic objects scattered around on various pages.  When I
deleted them, everything worked again. My empty pages are now deleted as
specified in Format > Page Layout > Pagination > Before Saving and Printing.

One more small step to world domination through FrameMaker.
