I want to put a hypertext link in my FrameMaker file, so that a reader can
click the path name in the PDF and it opens that folder on the
network...similar to inserting a Hypertext link in a Word document. Can this be
done? I've tried the 'message URL' command and it didn't work, nor did the

Re: Books and List of...

2010-09-22 Thread Bill Swallow
My thought is to create two Books as I can't see a way to add a condition to
an entire file. All Chapters and Appendices would be exactly the same files
(as would the Title Page and TOC), but the Drawings could then be included on
a product basis. This way I could also have Cover files relevant to specific
products (so I don't have to handle this manually any more).

That's what I used to do. :-)

I would also like to create a Drawing TOC or List of Drawings to fall after
the regular TOC. My first guess is to create the Marker Type Drawing, then
create a List of Drawings based on that Marker Type (I would use the Drawing
title as the text for the Marker). Does this make sense, or is there a better
 way?

Well, there's a canned LOF (list of figures) you can create, but a LOM
(list of markers) for drawings, specifically, would work splendidly as
well.

At the risk of belaboring the obvious: After removing the quotes from the
definition (in the Edit Cross-Reference dialog and clicking Done, the Update
Cross-References dialog appears. If you click Cancel instead of Update, and
then click Done in the Cross-Reference dialog, the xrefs in your doc remain

happened? If so, importing Cross-Reference formats from the current file should
fix it.

When you imported from another manual, did you confirm that the specific file
in that manual from which you imported had the correct definition? Did you
import to all the files in the current book?

If those are both dead ends, I'd try creating a new xref format defined as you
want it to look and doing some testing with it.

I'm using FM 7.2 right now (so some of the details above may not be exact), but
I've used FM 9 enough to be fairly confident that xref formats work properly.
It's hard to believe that some recent update would have broken this
functionality so badly ...

Sorry, but you need to explain better what the issue is (it seems to have
nothing to do with the digest post you quoted). Also, please provide some
context: FM version, OS version, task you're trying to accomplish, etc.

My FM 7.2 help has no instance of the phrase "rule color," so I'm not sure
what you're asking about.

Is it graphic lines? You can change the color and width of graphic lines in
the Tools palette (select Graphics > Tools. The color choices are determined
by the colors defined in the document (View > Color > Definitions).

Or are you asking about change bars? Set their color and thickness by
selecting Format > Document > Change Bars.

Or are you asking about table ruling lines? You can modify the ruling styles
listed in the Table Designer's Ruling tab and in the Custom Ruling and
Shading dialog. With the cursor in a table, select Table > Custom Ruling and
Shading. In the Custom Ruling and Shading dialog box, select the Ruling
Style you want to modify and click Edit Ruling Style. In the Edit Ruling
Style dialog box, make the desired changes and click Set. You can also add a
new Ruling Style by enter a new name.

I hope some of that helps with your problem, or at least helps you describe
the specific issue more clearly.

Frame Rule Color Change

Venkan wrote:

For security reasons, you can't send attachments (or HTML mail) to the list --
only plain text messages. So no one else saw the screen shot you provided in
the PDF.

I decided to live dangerously and take a look. :-) You had said:

> So, please help to change the Override Rule Color from black to any
> color in the text frames. And also I need to change the width of the
> rule. Please guide how to do this.

Now I see what you meant -- not override rule, but _overflow_ rule. The picture
you sent shows a small text frame filled to overflowing with text, indicated by
the solid border along the bottom. I assume this is just an illustrative
example. The main text frame on a page should have Autoconnect turned on so
that new pages are created as needed. Autoconnect is generally only turned off
for small disconnected text frames used for callouts, pull quotes, etc. The
person creating these and their contents is responsible for ensuring that they
are sized right and the contents don't overflow.

Do you just want to change the appearance of the solid border so that the
overflow problem is more visually apparent? There is no way within FrameMaker
to do that. Maybe someone who has experience with Resource Hacker
(http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/) knows whether that ruling line is a
"resource" that could be modified -- I doubt it.

I think the solution -- if, indeed, this happens often enough to be a
time-consuming problem -- lies in changing the document design, the workflow,
or maybe the attentiveness of those creating the problem. :-)

FM 9.0p

2010-09-22 Thread David Spreadbury
Rebecca,
Check the Cross-Reference for that you are applying.

I am not using FM9, still on F7.2, but I wouldn't expect Adobe to change the
xref format rules:

Look at the following and see if it doesn't answer your problem:

Cross Reference format:
see \<$paratext>\ on page\ <$pagenum>

results in:
see Document Conventions and Symbols on page 16

Cross Reference format:
see \`<$paratext>\' on page\ <$pagenum>

results in:
see "Document Conventions and Symbols" on page 16

Note the \' in the second example. This inserts the double-quotes around the
contents of <$paratext>. The last backslash-space inserts a hard space
(Ctrl+Space).
