Yes I did see Rick's post. Thanks Rick for your help!! I could feel the gray
hair popping out.

Luckily it is a simple fix. The chapter numbers have their own style and all
I had to do was to make Alignment = Left and kept Position = End of
Paragraph. The chapter number remains at the right margin.

Not sure what "The space is there" means. What matters is what's in Paragraph
Designer. Is the Autonumber Format (on the Numbering tab) still correct, i.e.,
unchanged by the conversion?

Assuming it is, what about the numbering settings for the file? How do they
compare with the same settings pre-conversion?

Here's a wild guess. If the file is one chapter in a book and normally gets its
numbering from the book, when you open it standalone, the <$chapnum> variable
usually retains the value it had the last time the book was updated. Maybe the
conversion for some reason interferes with the ability to recall that previous
value, and everything will be fine once the entire book is converted and
updated. :-)

graphics problem

2011-06-16 Thread strewth
I'm using Frame 10 on Windows 7. For the graphics, ThumbsPlus Pro 8.

I've created an appendix of 11 x 17 pages, landscaped, with the headers and
footers on the left and right sides of the page. The text goes up instead of
across. The purpose is so I can stick some large drawings in the appendix.

The problem that I'm having is that when I import the drawings by reference, I
don't get a graphics frame and the name of the file does not show up in the
Object Properties dialog box. Also, I cannot grab any of the handles to resize
any of the graphics. This happens regardless of whether the file is png, jpeg,
or bmp.

Anybody have any ideas as to what the problem is? Any solutions?

Thanks.

In FrameMaker 9 and 10, you can see a list of missing graphics ("unresolved

way (or, if necessary, a Framescript) to export or save this list?

FrameMaker 10 Autonumber Bug

2011-06-16 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Framers,

Joy Kocar discovered a bug in FrameMaker 10 and I have confirmed it. When
your autonumber is set to End of Paragraph and the paragraph is
right-aligned, the autonumber disappears. It works correctly in FrameMaker 9
and below. Here is how to duplicate the issue so you can see it:

1) Open a new, untitled document.

2) Click in the first paragraph and bring up the Paragraph Designer.

3) Go to the Autonumber panel, add the <$chapnum> building block to the
Autonumber Format field, set the Position to End of Paragraph, and click
Apply. You will see a number 1 at the end of the paragraph.

4) Go to the Basic panel of the Paragraph Designer, choose Alignment: Right
and click Apply. The number 1 will disappear.

If you try this in earlier versions of FrameMaker, the number stays.

Automatically highlighting PDFs from DITA sources?

2011-06-16 Thread Writer
Facts:

DITA source files authored in FM9
Draft PDFs are created using WebWorks ePublisher 2011.1 PDF XSL FO output
(fast, but lacking a certain amount of control)
Production PDFs are created by going DITA > FM > PDF (slow, but we have
complete control over the output)

Challenge:

Currently, we manually highlight document changes to our PDFs and create
bookmarks that list what Issue number the change is related to. By Issue
number, I mean the system number assigned to a software change. For example,
adding support for Windows 7 is Issue number 1450.

I've been given a task to find a way to automatically highlight the PDFs while
the PDFs are being created. I'm part way to a solution using ePublisher.
However, I was wondering if anyone else does this from DITA. If so, how do you
do it? I'm interested in hearing about any processes, even if the software you
use is different than hours.

Thanks for your help,

Nadine

Nadine

graphics problem

2011-06-16 Thread stre...@rcn.com

Thanks.

eps images dissappear after updating the eps

2011-06-16 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Yves,

Yes, I have seen this issue from time to time over the years. The bounding box
explanation makes sense, although I have never tested it directly. Your ?by
hand? solution could be done programmatically with FrameScript. As far as your
questions: since it is the imported graphic that gets messed up, this is
probably the only graphic in the frame that you want to move. You would not
want to move callouts, lines, etc. And you are right: it is impossible to know
if the imported graphic was originally centered in the anchored frame, so you
may have to make some manual adjustments after the script runs.

There is one way you could do this if you can pre-process the FrameMaker
documents before updating the images:

1) You would run a script before changing the images that would ?mark? the
contents of each anchored frame with its current X and Y offsets. Each object?s
UserString property could be used to store the information. See
http://frameexpert.com/tutorials/graphicstyles.htm for information on the
UserString property.

2) You would update the images.

3) You would run another script that would go through the updated images
in the FrameMaker documents and make sure each image?s X and Y location matches
the value stored in the UserString property; if not, the script would correct
it.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very much.

Hi Rick and the other FrameUsers

I have just tested this in Fm 7.2 and Fm 10 and, indeed, as soon as I save an
Illustrator EPS file in a later version, for example version 8 saved as version
9 (or CS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), the Top and Left offsets of the anchored frame change.
I have no idea why this happens, maybe someone from Adobe (Dov) can tell us?

I did find a more recent post about this problem in the Adobe forums:

http://forums.adobe.com/message/1238889

Indeed, the problem must be related to the way in which Illustrator saves the
bounding box of the graphic. The only way to fix this problem is a Framescript,
I guess, but I think the only thing which the framescript can do is:

1. Select the anchored frame.
2. Edit > Select all in frame.
3. Graphics > Align > T/B Centers, L/R Centers, because there is no way to know
the original position of the graphic in the AFrame.

But:

* What if the AFrame contains multiple "objects", i.e. multiple graphics and/or
callouts (text frames or text lines)?
* What if the AFrame contains a graphic which is not supposed to be aligned T/B
Centers, L/R Centers within the AFrame?

Kind regards

This may not be a completely appropriate post for this list ...

2011-06-16 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
... so please forgive me in advance. I figured I would give people here a shot
at this first - before putting it on eBay.

I have three licenses of FrameMaker 7.2 now - one is mine that I have upgraded
over time, but two belong to machines that were for ex-employees who left some
years ago. These machines have been re-purposed for other uses (not clear if
the FM licenses were properly de-activated first) and the disks were wiped
clean.

Thus, I have two FM 7.2 licenses that I would like to sell (to justify an FM9
to FM10 upgrade cost). These *should* be activatable, since they were probably
only installed once before. I can also provide a license transfer letter (on
company letterhead) for use with Adobe if needed.

So, would anyone here be interested in purchasing one or both of these licenses
at all (UNITED STATES ONLY PLEASE)? I am asking $175 each (or make me a
reasonable offer), plus $15 shipping in the US. You would get the *original*
Adobe installation disk with the license key on the back, and an unopened
(still shrink-wrapped), *printed* FM 7 manual that came with those purchases
that we made.

Please be aware that FM 7.2 is now old, and is not upgradeable to FM10 at one
shot - you would probably have to purchase some intermediate upgrades first, if
they are available at all!

But, if anyone needs additional 7.2 licenses, this is a simple way to get them!
:)

FrameMaker 10 disappearing text?

2011-06-16 Thread Joy Kocar
That was hard to explain. I believe the number is there, I can select
something but I cannot see it. This is happening for chapters in the two
books I've checked.

The FM10 version numbering and font settings are identical to the FM9
version, as far as I can tell.

I did try saving the FM10 version to MIF 10 format but the number is still
invisible.

Thanks for the ideas!

AW: Deleting Empty Paragraphs

Do you know "Delete unused paragraph format"? That is part of the

Betreff: Deleting Empty Paragraphs

Scratch That,

Even though it finds the tables, it actually leaves them intact when
searching and replacing this way.

Go figure J

===

HI All,

I'm trying to delete empty paragraphs from a file I imported from Word.
A simple

\P\p

or

^\p

in the find box using wildcards does fine, except if my empty para is an
anchor para with a table anchor in it. It seems FM doesn't see the table
anchor.

I have a script that deletes empty paras as well, but that left me with
empty paras that were a level 3 or 4 Heading.

And yes, I already did a MIF wash. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Orly.

Maybe the
conversion for some reason interferes with the ability to recall that previous
value, and everything will be fine once the entire book is converted and
updated. :-)

In FrameMaker 9 and 10, you can see a list of missing graphics ("unresolved
graphic inset" or "unresolved image") in the "Insets Pod". Is there also a way
(or, if necessary, a Framescript) to export or save this list?

RE: eps images dissappear after updating the eps

2011-06-16 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Yves,

Yes, I have seen this issue from time to time over the years. The bounding box
explanation makes sense, although I have never tested it directly. Your “by
hand” solution could be done programmatically with FrameScript.

1) You would run a script before changing the images that would “mark” the
contents of each anchored frame with its current X and Y offsets. Each object’s
UserString property could be used to store the information. See
http://frameexpert.com/tutorials/graphicstyles.htm for information on the
UserString property.

2) You would update the images.

3) You would run another script that would go through the updated images
in the FrameMaker documents and make sure each image’s X and Y location matches
the value stored in the UserString property; if not, the script would correct
it.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very much.

Subject: Re: eps images dissappear after updating the eps

It's a _really_ good idea to save legacy files as 10 MIF after
converting them to make sure that all is in order after conversion.
That's the first thing I'd try.

Fm 9 + 10: export list of "unresolved graphic insets" (aka "missing graphics")?

2011-06-16 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

In FrameMaker 9 and 10, you can see a list of missing graphics ("unresolved
graphic inset" or "unresolved image") in the "Insets Pod". Is there also a
way (or, if necessary, a Framescript) to export or save this list?

Thanks

Scratch That,

searching and replacing this way.

Go figure J

===

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Orly.

FrameMaker 10 disappearing text?

2011-06-16 Thread Joy Kocar
Hi Framers,

I just upgraded to FrameMaker 10. I open a file in FM10 and my chapter
number does not appear. The space is there for it but I simply do not see
it. I close the file without saving, then open it in FM9 on the same machine
and voila, it is there again. Coincidentally my computer was rebuilt to
Windows 7 (hard drive was failing) but I wouldn't expect it to matter since
I opened both FM versions on the same machine.

What could be causing this? I tried searching the Adobe forums and
discussion lists but have not found a post regarding this.

Thanks for your help!

Darn. That script looks like it should work. I wonder what's overriding

Oh well. I guess I'll just have to live with it for now.

Bruce Foster, creator of many fine FrameMaker plugins, passed away suddenly on
Saturday, June 11, 2011. Although Mr Foster had been diagnosed with multiple
myeloma in September 2010, his death still came earlier than was expected.

Mr Foster's wife Barbara Foster today responded to a recent e-mail I had sent
to
Bruce requesting assistance with his Archive plugin, by letting me know this
news. Mrs Foster gave me permission to post here on FrameUsers, and mentioned
her intention of updating her late husband's web page
(http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster) with the news of his death.

Mr Foster's plugins for FrameMaker were Archive, BookInfo, ImpGraph, MifSave,
MifToFM, and RtfSave.

Re: eps images dissappear after updating the eps

2011-06-16 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Rick and the other FrameUsers

I have just tested this in Fm 7.2 and Fm 10 and, indeed, as soon as I save
an Illustrator EPS file in a later version, for example version 8 saved as
version 9 (or CS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), the Top and Left offsets of the anchored
frame change. I have no idea why this happens, maybe someone from Adobe
(Dov) can tell us?

I did find a more recent post about this problem in the Adobe forums:

http://forums.adobe.com/message/1238889

Indeed, the problem must be related to the way in which Illustrator saves
the bounding box of the graphic. The only way to fix this problem is a
Framescript, I guess, but I think the only thing which the framescript can
do is:

1. Select the anchored frame.
2. Edit > Select all in frame.
3. Graphics > Align > T/B Centers, L/R Centers, because there is no way to
know the original position of the graphic in the AFrame.

But:

* What if the AFrame contains multiple "objects", i.e. multiple graphics
and/or callouts (text frames or text lines)?
* What if the AFrame contains a graphic which is not supposed to be aligned
T/B Centers, L/R Centers within the AFrame?

Kind regards
