How to search archive

2011-10-06 Thread Anton David
Dears framers,

I would like to know how you do to search the archive.
As far as I see, you have to open each single month thread to do a search.
Is there a way you can do a search on all archive contents?

I have the feeling we are not leveraging the information the best way and
many times same questions might be repeated.

Wish you a pleasant day

You could do a site search using google:
searchterm site:lists.frameusers.com
Replace searchterm with your search term.

Table templates (FrameMaker 10)

2011-10-06 Thread Steve Rickaby
Posted for a colleague...

To maintain consistency with documents created using RoboHelp 7, we need to
create a table template (in FrameMaker 10, as part of TCS3.5) which contains
images of step numbers (copied into anchored frames) in each row. The Table
Designer isn't any help for this requirement and when I insert anchored frames
and images into the table and save, they're not being 'picked up' by the table
template.

Am I trying to do the impossible? If not, I'd much appreciate any relevant
suggestions.

I suspect that the answer to this is 'yes', but I'd like to be sure.

RE: Table templates (FrameMaker 10)

2011-10-06 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Steve,

When you create or update a table format, each cell's paragraph format from
the first row in each column is stored as part of the table format. This
applies to heading, body, and footing rows. However, it only stores
paragraph formats, not content like text and anchored frames. There are two
ways you could handle this:

1) Use a font for the step numbers and apply that paragraph format to the
first column in the table. In the Table Designer, click Update All, so that
when you insert a new table, the paragraph format will be used in that
column.

2) Make an example table with anchored frames, etc. and store it on a
Reference Page, where you can use as a boilerplate table. There is a plugin
that can be used to insert boilerplate content from a Reference Page; I
think it is called AutoText.

Of course, you could use FrameScript to automate the insertion of the table
and the appropriate number of step graphics. Please let me know if you have
any questions or comments. Thank you very much.

FrameMaker menu bar issue

2011-10-06 Thread George, Brenda (CAI)
On my FrameMaker menu bar, I have noticed that a selection is missing from the
choice list of a Marketing menu bar category in FrameMaker 8. This
Marketing menu category and its choice list were added internally to the
standard FrameMaker menu bar. The person who added it no longer works here. I
need to locate the code that creates this additional menu bar selection.

I'm not sure where to look for this code? Can anyone help me with this?

Re: FrameMaker menu bar issue

2011-10-06 Thread Scott Prentice
A custom menu item may also be defined by an FDK client. This client
could be loaded through an entry in the APIClients section of the
maker.ini file or by adding the DLL to the fminit/Plugins folder. If
you're saying that this menu item is missing and needs to be added ..
you may be looking for a DLL file, or if the DLL is there, perhaps the
maker.ini entry is missing.

The real danger, and I'm writing from experience, is that once the engineers
get the skills and tools to create documents the writers could be let go.

In that type of firm, the engineer's customer-facing documents would then be
reviewed for format and style by the in-house editor, whose main job is the
CEO's assistant.

RE: Scary responsibility in job ad

2011-10-06 Thread Daniel Doornbos - PTU
Just my opinion but I think engineers gravitate to that field because they
relate better to things than to people.

They’re great with formulas but lousy when communicating with us mere mortals.

Where I work, most of the engineers speak English as a second language.

Occasionally ESL engineers try to “correct” my work by introducing spelling and
grammatical errors, incomprehensible sentences, or information placed where the
user would never find it.

Typically a citation from the Chicago Manual of Style cools their enthusiasm.

I don’t think this should ever be the responsibility of a tech writer,
but it does indicate why they *need* a tech writer.I say let the engineers
be engineers and let the tech writers be tech writers.

Re: OT: Scary responsibility in job ad

2011-10-06 Thread Laura Lemay

Yeah, I've seen that job ad.

I've had a couple of jobs in the past where coaching engineers on writing was
one of the key responsibilities. In each of those jobs there was substantial
confusion over whether the technical writing task was owned by the writers or
by the engineers (and the writers were just there to pretty up what the
engineers wrote.) In those jobs there were always many pointless battles over
ownership that got in the way of actual writing.

I consider this kind of a thing a warning sign now. At the very least it is a
top 5 question for the interview if the job looks otherwise interesting.

How often do you complain that engineers don't like to give you the information
you need.  If you said often, I would not be surprised.

I'm seeing some interest in this kind of thing from our local Agile
Scrum Master. There aren't enough writers to go to all the scrums , so
(the thinking goes) maybe the engineers could create some content, which
the writers could edit.

More depressing even that that are the contract posts where they say 'You write

Writer wrote:

It makes me laugh and cringe in equal measures.

I'm really surprised at the overwhelmingly negative reaction to this ad.
Coaching engineers is cited as just one of the responsibilities; without seeing
what the others are, I have no opinion of the ad as a whole, but this specific
responsibility certainly doesn't make me laugh, cringe, fear for my future, or
get defensive about my profession.

I'm asked (yes, often by engineers) language/grammar/writing questions fairly
frequently, and in the past when things weren't so busy, I did the occasional
short presentation on some language/writing issue at the end of a team meeting.
These were well received, and I often got follow-up questions.

The engineers I know are intelligent people who understand the value of
communicating clearly. They want to improve their writing skills in order to
communicate more effectively with each other, managers, and other departments
(sales, support, etc.), as well as with me.

IMHO, sharing what I know with people who see the value of learning it makes me
more valuable. And it's rewarding for me, not cringe-inducing.
