Steve, IMHO this is a display problem. Try a larger zoom level (in FM and in

Framemaker 10/Ditamap odd behavior

2011-11-09 Thread Steve Nelson

Hello,
I have a ditamap that, when I do a simple save, Framemaker wants to save it
as a .fm file. My other ditamaps don't do this. Something I've noticed is
that this particular ditamap has a file size of about 1.2 mb, where the
others are all around 25k.

Any idea what could be happening here?

Framemaker 10 crashes when changing conditional text display setting

2011-11-09 Thread rebecca officer
Hi everyone

We're getting Framemaker 10 crashes when changing conditional text display
settings on some files (3 so far out of several hundred). It crashes, for
example, when we toggle between build expressions and/or Show As Per Condition
settings. Depending on file and display settings, it crashes after anything
between 1 and 40ish display actions. 40 we could live with; 1 or 2 makes the
files unusable.

The error message is Internal error 10014, 5988022, 5988444, 4795055.

Sometimes we have to forcefully close FM after this. Other times, FM closes
itself and we get another dialog box:
The instruction at 0x033e76e0 referenced memory at 0x0d9af94b. The memory
could not be read.
Or sometimes, 'the memory could not be written'. And once, it was the
exception Privileged instruction. (0xc096) occurred in the application at
location 0x0c76e57a.

The hex values vary from PC to PC but the actions to cause each crash don't.

The files have multi-page tables with conditional text in the tables. They were
created in Frame 7.0 and upgraded straight to 10.0.0. We're using conditional
text with 11 conditions and 8 boolean expressions.

I've trawled the forum and frameusers list, and tried:

* 5 different machines - they all see the issue.

* washing through MIF - the MIF files crash FM too.

* working locally instead of across the network - no difference.

* showing all conditions and then looking in the Mif files for any text in a
flow called Hidden. There wasn't any.

* saving after every change of conditional text display setting. This sometimes
works but it's a pain!

* removing all the paragraph overrides in the file. This worked for 1 out of 3
files.

* removing the tables and/or removing conditional text from them. This worked
for 2 out of 3 files, and improved the 3rd, but I don't think it's a feasible
fix.

We're all running FM 10.0.1.402 on Win XP Pro SP3, 32 bit machines. The amount
of RAM varies, but some PCs have 4 Gig. We've all installed the MS hotfix for
the text dropout issue. Files are unstructured.

Has anyone else seen anything like this? Any ideas of anything else we can try?
Any ideas of a cause??

Many thanks,
Rebecca

Translating English to Portuguese

2011-11-09 Thread Dave.Stamm
2011-11-09-03T18:15Z

FrameMaker 9.0p255

Mif2Go 33U43 (with FrameMaker 8.n)

I've addressed this to three e-mail lists, so my apologies to all who receive
it more than once.

Will you please help identify the considerations of translating a manual and
then producing on-station help from the translated files?

In on-station help for FrameMaker 9.0p255, I found verbiage to the effect that
FrameMaker 8.0 has Dictionary and hyphenation support . . . for Portuguese.

Given:
  1. Source files are to be in English in FrameMaker 9.0p255.
  2. Source files are to be translated from English to Portuguese.
  3. From translated source files, we will need to produce either
a. HTML help (.htm) without context sensitivity or
b. Compiled HTML help (.chm) with context sensitivity

The source files are in FrameMaker 7.n, and we are confident that we can open
and save the source files through 8.n and into 9.n.

¡Thanks!

question on DITA - FMx

Does anyone have any experience with the DITA - FMx tools from Leximation?
I went to the website but didn't get a clear picture of what it is offering

advantages does it offer?

Thanks,

Re: question on DITA - FMx

Hi Linda

We have a lot of experience with DITA-FMx and we like it a lot. Yes, it
works with structured Framemaker because you use it to author and publish
DITA-structured content in XML. This is a list of the advantages which
DITA-FMx offers compared to the DITA support in various versions of
FrameMaker:

http://leximation.com/dita-fmx/featurecomparison.php

You can also find some movies of DITA-FMx on YouTube:

OT: Phone number links in PDFs on smart phone

I have a client that wants phone numbers in their PDFs to be dialable when

be able to figure out what syntax to use in my PDF files. Any pointers and
suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you very much.

Hyperlink from Frame to Folder in Network

2011-11-09 Thread Gary Bankston
I thought this would be a simple thing to do but...

I currently have a Frame created pdf document that I need to link over the
network to another Frame created pdf. I am using the following to create
the link, openlink X:\filename.pdf and it works every time from wherever
my first frame/pdf document is located to the second frame/pdf document. My
problem comes when I try and write to a folder beyond the root of any
directory. When I write openlink X:\foldername\filename.pdf the second
backslash changes to some other character when I select edit
hypertext and when the pdf file is generated, the link is not functional.

What am I missing? What am I doing wrong? Any help down this path would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

RE: Framemaker 10 crashes when changing conditional text display setting

2011-11-09 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Winfried

I'm embarrassed to admit I hadn't thought of that! But it didn't work.

I opened a blank file, imported all settings from our template, and pasted in
the contents of a sick file. It still crashed. I even went back to an old
template from before we started using build expressions, and manually recreated
the build expressions in the blank. no luck.

Cheers
Rebecca

Subject: Framemaker 10 crashes when changing conditional text display setting

Many thanks,
Rebecca

2011-11-09 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Roman

That's interesting. I did manually save the file as MIF.

Did you try/find anything else? Anything that your sick files had in common?

We're speculating it's FM's pagination engine getting upset with CT causing
repeated major changes to pagination. But that's pure speculation!

FrameMaker10 Graphics Problems and Strange Object Grouping Behavior

2011-11-09 Thread todd . bersley

Hello,

Our technical publications team recently upgraded from Frame 7 to Frame 10
(Version 10.0.1.408) included with the Technical Communication Suite on
Windows 7. Unfortunately, we are seeing a lot of crashes when we work on
graphics using Frame's drawing tools or when importing snapshots. We've
tried MIF washing all of our files, but we are still seeing frequent
crashes when working with graphics.

One specific problem that we are seeing is that Frame is having a hard time
grouping all objects in our often complex block diagrams. I have tried
selecting all of the boxes, lines, and text lines in a figure in order to
group them all, only to have one or more elements, which I thought I had
selected, remain ungrouped.

Does anyone have any guidelines on grouping to prevent this type of
problem? Or is this just a Frame bug that we have to live with until Adobe
comes out with a patch?

Also, does anyone know if Adobe is working on improving how Frame handles
graphics so that it doesn't crash so frequently?

I assume that Frame 10 is sending error reports to Adobe when these crashes
occur, but I can't seem to locate any information on this problem on
Adobe's support site. We're seriously considering going to an outside
drawing tool like Visio because Frame no longer seems like it can handle
complex block diagrams. And in the past we really like the Frame drawing
tools because they were easy to use, helped keep our file sizes smaller
since we weren't importing a lot of graphics, and looked sharper in our
online production than imported gifs or jpgs.

Any suggestions on managing graphics or using the drawing tools in Frame10
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with the DITA - FMx tools from Leximation? I
went to the website but didn't get a clear picture of what it is offering

Re: Hyperlink from Frame to Folder in Network

Gary,

Just use forward slashes in pathnames. FrameMaker reserves certain letters in
combination with a backslash for special characters. I seem to remember that \f
is used for the florin character (a cursive f).

Framemaker 10/Ditamap odd behavior

If you expect that it actually contains data not in the real file,
open it then force save to XML, otherwise say No and delete it.
