generate a list of paragraph tag properties?

2011-11-22 Thread Studio Smalbro
I need to generate a list of paragraph tag properties used in a
document. I know how to generate a list of paragraph tags, but is there
also a way to make FrameMaker generate a description of the properties
used in each paragraph tag? I recall such a feature in PageMaker and
Quark but can't seem to find it in FrameMaker ...

Bjørn

Hi Clint,

Yes you are right. Matt in the TCS-Group was the first person to suggest
this to me. I guess I never saw this behavior before because my focus is
usually in the document itself. I am just glad there's a straight forward
way to keep on calling both pods with hot keys.

Thanks,

  Ah, then I don't know.

If you're creating chapters separately and then combining them into
a book, that might be part of the problem.

You could try creating the chapters as submaps and then place them
in an uber map. That's what we do (we're still using FM 9, btw).
 When
 you
save the uber ditamap as an FM book with FM components, it creates a
books file, and the submaps are converted to chapters within the book.

RE: hotkey bug in FrameMaker 10

2011-11-22 Thread Harmeet Singh.
Hi,

This seems to be an as designed behavior of FrameMaker hotkeys. When you open a
dialog by using a CTRL shortcut, the focus shifts from the document to the
dialog. In this state, no other dialog can be invoked by a shortcut as the
focus needs to be on the document for a shortcut to work.
What you can try is after bringing up the paragraph designer [CTRL + m], use
[SHIFT + F7] and then use [CTRL+ d]. This should open both the pods.

Hope this helps.

Bjørn,

Do you have Framescript? In the version we have (5.2), there is a sample script
that does this. It's called DisplayFormats.fsl.

Years ago, there was something called MIFMuncher that parsed MIF files and
output paratag info. By years ago, I mean like the Win98 era. pause...
Amazingly, you can still download this utility from
http://www.stc-carolina.org/MIF+Muncher. If you don't have Framescript, it's
worth a try.

Re: generate a list of paragraph tag properties?

2011-11-22 Thread Mike Wickham
The FormatList plugin from Squidds is great for this, but not cheap (49
Euro). It creates a table, with one row for each paragraph format and
cells in the row for nearly all of the properties of each paragraph
format. It's very handy, since it makes it easy to scan down a column to
see, for example, the one paragraph format that has a typeface different
than all the rest. It also creates tables for character formats,
variables, and cross-references:

http://www.squidds.de/fileadmin/daten/finalyser/PDF/Pricelist_Orderform_FINALYSER_US_only_Nov2011_Squid_RZ_verteilt.pdf

I like FormatList a lot, but the Squidds site is hard to navigate,
payment is difficult (no shopping cart), the price is a bit high, it's
only one license (so no second copy on your laptop for travel) and there
are no free upgrades when the FM version changes. And there's a bit of a
language barrier, since the site is hosted by people who speak German
natively. But FormatList is easier to use than the similar feature in
Silicon Prairie's Paragraph Tools and Character Tools (which I would buy
anyway for all the other great things they do). Those tools create a
separate table for each paragraph style, so the result doesn't make it
easy to compare all the styles in a document to see if, for example, the
same serif typefaces are used throughout.

I do wish the FormatList plugin also made a table of table formats!

Training for FrameMaker 10 and S1000D

2011-11-22 Thread Owen, Clint
To anyone offering FrameMaker training:

S1000D is a documentation standard that was developed in Europe for
military use, but is now being widely adopted by Aerospace companies
around the world. Theoretically, it's a framework to create any kind of
documentation, from paper parts lists to maintenance procedures with 3D
graphics on your iPhone, all from information modules stored in a
central database. It's a nice vision of the future, but getting from
here to there is the big (expensive) problem.

FrameMaker 10 seems to have quite a lot of S1000D support built in, such
as the means to interact with a common source database and the ability
to validate data modules against business rules, etc., but we are having
trouble making any practical use of it.

Is anyone offering a course yet on using FrameMaker to support an S1000D
implementation? We have been to some free seminars and watched plenty of
Webinars, but they were mostly sales pitches on the benefits of the
standard without any practical value. We need to move ahead with a real
solution, because we have customers that are starting to request
documentation that meets the new standard.

I would love to hear from any of you trainers about what resources you
have available. We would really like to keep using FrameMaker as the
basis for our documentation, rather than start with something completely
new. It would be a big plus if the training was available in the Seattle
area.

Thanks,

Clint

You might want to contact Front Runner in Toronto
(http://www.front-runner.com/). I don't see course for that on their Web site,
but they might be able to help you in some way.

Re: Training for FrameMaker 10 and S1000D

2011-11-22 Thread Alan Houser

We've looked at providing S1000D training and support, but haven't
been clear on the business case for entering this market. The
blocking factors for small training companies appear to be (from my
perspective):

- Organizations that deploy S1000D are usually very large. They have
their own particular purchasing infrastructure, with their own (also
typically large) preferred vendors.
- The Defense community (where S1000D prevails) is close-nit. Again,
the players prefer their own set of vendors, and its relatively
difficult to enter this community of players from the outside
(without having prior experience and connections in Defense).
- Working with the Defense community presents formidable and costly
roadblocks (like required security clearances).

If my experience does not ring true with others (practitioners or
vendors) I'd love to hear from you.

Mekon in the UK has extensive experience with S1000D and FrameMaker.
I'm not aware of this combination of experience in North America.
You might look for S1000D training from one of the North
America-based companies in this space (Inmedius, O'Neill and
Associates, Hebco come to mind in the U.S.), and hire a
trainer/consultant to customize the FrameMaker 10 S1000D support to
meet your particular workflow and business requirements.

RE: generate a list of paragraph tag properties?

2011-11-22 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi Bjørn,

I recommend the Report module from the [i]-frame Extended Pack.

http://www.i-frame.itl.info/en/feature-description/i-frame-modules/extended-pack/report-paragraph-and-char-formats.html

As far as I know the single modules can also be bought separtely.

Best regards

Winfried

I need to generate a list of paragraph tag properties used in a
document. I know how to generate a list of paragraph tags, but is there
also a way to make FrameMaker generate a description of the properties
used in each paragraph tag? I recall such a feature in PageMaker and
Quark but can't seem to find it in FrameMaker ...

 best regards
 Bjørn
