RE: how to create an embedded mini-TOC or similar?

2012-10-19 Thread Harpreet Singh Seehra
You can convert the context-sensitive Help markers that you insert in your
FrameMaker documents and reuse them as map IDs. You specify the
context-sensitive Help marker in the Project Settings dialog box before linking
FrameMaker documents. You can also specify this setting when you import
FrameMaker documents. You can work with context-sensitive Help markers in
FrameMaker documents in two ways:

Automatic conversion of map IDs from FrameMaker documents
You apply context-sensitive Help markers in your FrameMaker documents, and
specify the marker type in the conversion settings. RoboHelp imports the
markers from FrameMaker documents and adds the map IDs from the strings
contained in the context-sensitive Help markers.

Manually adding a map ID file
If you received map IDs from your development team, you use these map IDs
as the context-sensitive Help marker text strings for the marker to be used as
context-sensitive Help marker in your FrameMaker documents. Later, you create a
map ID file by associating the map IDs from the development team and the
context-sensitive Help marker text you inserted in the FrameMaker documents.
You then add this file to the project. When you link or import the FrameMaker
documents, you specify the context-sensitive Help marker in the conversion
settings.

Select File Project Settings.

In the Import tab of the Project Settings dialog box, click Edit under
FrameMaker Document.

In the Other Settings group of the Conversion Settings dialog box, enter
the Context-Sensitive Help Marker.

FM10. I have this 150-page chapter that's similar to an API reference.
Each of 4-500 settings has its own topic starting with a heading 1
of its name. The headings are in alphabetical order.

There are obstacles to creating context-sensitive help so as a workaround I'd
like to create a compact, multi-column list of links at the beginning of the
chapter. Any suggestions on how to do that?

The headings rarely if ever change so I could live without it updating
dynamically.

I thought maybe I'd start by creating a table of contents for the chapter, but
it doesn't have hyperlinks the way the book TOC does.

Because of the way RH converts TOC and IX into other structures I don't expect

If your KB can import data, show the the data format and I can get Maker to

PDF SharePoint Question

2012-10-19 Thread Anderson, Ben
Framers,

I've got a PDF question that I hope someone can help me with.

I have a Frame 10 book that contains about 50 or so chapters/files including a
TOC and an Index. I distill the book, to individual PDFs, using Acrobat
Distiller X (part of TCS 3).

When I open either the TOC or Index PDF on my shared drive, where all of the
source Frame files and PDFs reside (same folder), all of the links to headings,
subheadings, etc. work...meaning, if I click on TOC entry Blah Blah--3.34
I'm taken to that very heading on page 34 of chapter 3.

Now, when I load all of the PDFs to a folder on my SharePoint site, open the
TOC PDF, and click the Blah Blah-3.34 entry, it opens the correct PDF, but
does NOT take me to the correct page...just to page one of Chapter 3.

The same thing happens with my Index entries. They work fine on the shared
drive. But, as soon as I load the PDFs to SharePoint (2010 by the way), links
within a chapter will only take me to the first page of that particular
chapter, not to the exact page where the index tag is.

Anyone have an ideas?

Thanks!!

Collaborate with PDF-based roundtrip reviews?

2012-10-19 Thread Megha Chaitanya
Hi Deanna,

One need not change the FrameMaker files manually, but one can import the
comments to FrameMaker file using File->Import->PDF Comments. PDF comments will
come as track text edits in the FrameMaker document. One can use Track Text
Edit toolbar to go through each comment and take action of accept/reject on
them. Pls. refer to this blog
http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2011/05/handling-pdf-review-comments-in-framemaker.html
which talks in detail about the FrameMaker review workflow.

Acrobat Reader XI supports full set of commeting tools. So, if the reviewers
have Acrobat Reader XI, you don't need Acrobat professional to enable commeting
in PDF. However, you need Acrobat professional to enable commenting ,if
reviewers are using Acrobat Reader X or below.

Hi,

We are migrating from FrameMaker 7.2 to FrameMaker 11. In our current workflow,
we create a PDF file and use Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional to enable
commenting in it so that reviewers who don't have FrameMaker can electronically
review and comment on our FrameMaker documents. We then merge the electronic
comments into the PDF file and manually change the FrameMaker files accordingly.

For FrameMaker 11, Adobe advertises, "Collaborate with PDF-based roundtrip
reviews." I've searched, but I can't find how these types of reviews are
implemented. Can you briefly explain how this feature works? Mainly I want to
know if we need to purchase Adobe Acrobat Professional X to retain our ability
to solicit electronic reviews from reviewers who don't have FrameMaker or if
the need for Acrobat Professional is eliminated by this feature in FrameMaker
11.

Thanks,

Deanna.

HI,

Writing in for another person. She's using Frame 10 on xp.

She is a novice in Frame and I am trying to help her out. I think that the

If we save the file as mif, I don't know what to look for to resolve the

how to create an embedded mini-TOC or similar?

When you link or import the FrameMaker
documents, you specify the context-sensitive Help marker in the conversion
settings.

Select File > Project Settings.

In the Import tab of the Project Settings dialog box, click Edit under
FrameMaker Document.

In the Other Settings group of the Conversion Settings dialog box, enter
the Context-Sensitive Help Marker.

Each of 4-500 settings has its own topic starting with a "heading 1"
of its name.

Importing Formats - Doesn't Apply?

2012-10-19 Thread rebecca officer
I'm guessing the headings that didn't change had character overrides. If you're
happy to remove all overrides from the whole document, you can do the import
again and select the Remove all overrides checkbox. If not, you can search the
document for overrides and remove them when you find them in headings.

Another thought: in the document you imported from, could some of the heading
styles there be overridden? You might think you're importing from a clean file
but not actually be.

Cheers
Rebecca

Hi Framers,

I imported paragraph, character, and page layout formats to one
document from another. Then I realized the source document's formats
were incorrect, so I imported formats to the recipient document from
a different document that was correct. But the font family for
several headings did not change in the recipient document as it
should have.

What went wrong and how can I get the correct font to apply
document-wide (other than manually changing + "update all")? I'd
rather not have to find every affected style and change each first
instance manually.

Thanks,
Karen

Collaborate with PDF-based roundtrip reviews?

Subject: RE: Collaborate with PDF-based roundtrip reviews?

Interesting ... thanks for the response, Richard!

And I don't know about all of you all, but I strongly, *strongly* want any such
"special plumbing" to be functional in the standalone purchased versions of
FrameMaker and Acrobat Pro. (I simply don't want to get onto the much more
costly TCS purchase/upgrade path - I do *not* need the other tools in that
product and do not want to pay for them - I have enough trouble justifying my
FrameMaker purchases now that the upgrade prices have gone up so much in the
past few years.)

I *do* want the integration between FrameMaker and Acrobat Pro to be as
good/perfect as possible. That is why I continue to justify, buy and upgrade
the [expensive] Adobe Acrobat Pro product rather than just live with one of the
many inexpensive "PDF printer" solutions that are available - heck, as I
recall, one such PDF printer is included in my "PDF Convertor Pro" software
(which I currently only use to convert from PDF to Word and Excel files).

Since I always have to perform some common manual actions every time I generate
a PDF (since not everything "comes across" from FrameMaker), if the integration
could be better, then that is important to me!

Harpreet, can you please provide me with Adobe's response and position here?
What are the exact differences and why are they not in the stand-alone
versions? Can Adobe release an update (perhaps a "connector" program similar to
what is in TCS) for people who own FrameMaker *and* Acrobat Pro, but don't own
TCS? Shouldn't this standard in the Acrobat Pro package for it to install this
integration if a copy of FrameMaker is also installed on the system?

Thanks,

Z

I can't say regarding Acrobat, but for FM that hasn't been the case for any
version of TCS. The TCS versions of FM and RoboHelp have "special plumbing" to
make FM-RH integration work. I suspect that similar "special plumbing" has now
been added to Acrobat to make the FM-Acro integration work.

All source in FM10, using RH9 to generate WebHelp.

Hyperlinks (openObjectId Hypertext markers) in a generated list of
paragraphs (.lop file) do not get converted to links in RoboHelp,
though they're fine in PDF and within FM. Anybody encountered this

FM openObjectId markers > RoboHelp

Because of the way RH converts TOC and IX into other structures I don't expect
you'll have luck with the generated lists and ix's turning into files with live
links?I expect it has to do with the fundamental difference in generating the
documents themselves.

You have a great idea for additional functionality, though, and I suggest you
submit that as a request to www.adobe.com/go/wish. I'll be doing this, and
asking others to do so via social media.

Of course, if anyone can get this to work, please let us all know!!

If your KB can import data, show the the data format and I can get Maker to
produce it.? So can any other plugin developer, or anybody who knows how to use
scripts to munge the MIF.? Further, since you're on Maker 10, this can be
implemented in ExtendScript, so you could do it, or somebody else could do it
and then you could modify it as necessary.

Mif2Go handles those links correctly. Like the ones
in the generated IX, they link to specific paragraph
ObjectIDs, all of which Mif2Go preserves when:

[HTMLOptions]
ObjectIDs=All

Same for Word output, when:

AutoHotKey with FM10

2012-10-19 Thread Robert Lauriston
Anyone using this with FM10? I find references to FM on their user
forum but mostly not recent.

FM10 unstructured to knowledgebase

2012-10-19 Thread Robert Lauriston
That's an open-ended development project and can be quite expensive.

FM openObjectId markers > RoboHelp

2012-10-19 Thread Robert Lauriston
That's no help to me, since I can't make MIF2Go emulate RoboHelp's
stupid WebHelp directory structure so the hard-coded CSH URLs (which
I'm stuck with indefinitely) would work.

When I open either the TOC or Index PDF on my shared drive, where all of the
source Frame files and PDFs reside (same folder), all of the links to headings,
subheadings, etc. work...meaning, if I click on TOC entry "Blah Blah--3.34"
I'm taken to that very heading on page 34 of chapter 3.

Now, when I load all of the PDFs to a folder on my SharePoint site, open the
TOC PDF, and click the "Blah Blah-3.34" entry, it opens the correct PDF, but
does NOT take me to the correct page...just to page one of Chapter 3.

Thanks!!

FW: FM10 - font error

2012-10-19 Thread William W. Saylor, PE

From: William W. Saylor, PE [mailto:wsay...@earthlink.net]
Sent: Friday, October 19, 2012 6:05 PM

Subject: FM10 - font error

I am using FM10 on a book project and have inherited some older (FM7?) files
that were exchanged using the .mif format. Somewhere there must be a "Times"
font called out, which is no longer available. When I open a single chapter
there is no problem - just an error message saying Times New Roman is used
instead. However, when I put the chapters in a book and use the
document>formatting>number command to set each chapter I get an error that
FM10 can do nothing because of the previous error.

I have searched the document, all tags etc. and can find no reference to or
use of Times. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bill

how to create an embedded mini-TOC or similar?

2012-10-19 Thread Robert Lauriston
I still haven't found a workable solution for this other than perhaps
spending $150 on FrameScript and $40 on Rick Quattro's ChapterTOC,
which would be hard to justify since I could do it manually in a very
unpleasant hour or so.

cross-reference dialog history question

2012-10-19 Thread Robert Lauriston
FM10s cross-reference dialog reverts to the current document and the
paragraph tag in the list after inserting an x-ref to a heading in
another document.

Did FM always do that? I don't inserting a bunch of x-refs being that painful.
