Re: A giggle from the Adobe website

2014-10-28 Thread Robert Lauriston
I think FrameMaker's docs are the least bad of all the authoring tools
I've used or evaluated.

Their biggest weakness is often complete lack of coverage of
higher-level tasks. E.g. there are no templates in the usual sense, so
how do you work around that? The sample files they've provided not
only don't embody best practices, they were apparently created by
people who didn't understand many of the (properly documented)
fundamentals.

I think Microsoft has a leg up on Adobe docs, albeit a skinny leg. Even before
Adobe bought the company, FM docs were, shall we say, less than robust. They
remind me of open-source philosophy where developers wait for a user to
document that an icon means means "crash and burn," not "save this file."

If not for Sarah O'Keefe and Scriptorium, FrameMaker would have been abandoned
a decade ago. Just saying.

Ummm … it works for me.

Also, I just looked at the source code for SetPrint (thanks to Ian Hawkins for
releasing it to the world!) and see no reason for it to fail in recent
FrameMaker versions.

As an FYI, you have to have a SetPrint.ini file in the same folder where you
have the DLL. This folder is C:\Program Files
(x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker12\fminit\Plugins …

I just tried it and it worked fine …

RE: FM9 Crashes when Creating PDFs with files that Contain PDFs

2014-10-28 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Alison,

If you’re really sure that the FM files have not been changed, nor have the
(PDF) images referenced, then it must be something in your system.

Did you (or someone else) change a local printer or a network printer? Or did
you remove, or update VISIO installation or MSoffice? Or change other software?
It’s possible that the pdf files you created from visio use a font that is no
longer available on your system. You won’t notice until it’s gone ...

Another thing is remove all your temp files, and font cache files (search your
PC). Your distiller folder has a cache, plus saved error messages. may be these
can give a clue?

I admit I am not going by direct experience regarding the use of PDF as a
graphic format. One of my coworkers has been forced to embed single-page PDFs
into Frame files for a particular document set she works on. She was the one
who said that the file size bloated from that. The files were output from a
database, and she was adding 50 or so to a book. I think she had to break the
chapter she was adding them to into multiple files in order to get it to
distill properly.
I don't think I've ever heard that the preferred workflow was to create a
graphic, save it as PDF, and then import it into a Frame file that was going to
be PDFed. That seems ... odd to me for some reason, but that may just be me. :-)

alternative before.

The interesting things is, I have been using this method for years with the
same book files and have never had a problem before. In fact, when I built PDF
files for review in mid-September, there wasn’t a single hesitation. The PDFs
the Print to Book… option first encounter were not edited between mid-September
and when I encountered the problem last week.

I spent a lot of time thinking over the weekend and remember an issue I had

this go away – or if I actually did anything at all – so I’m going to run a few
tests.

Cross your fingers for me.

Out of curiousity, Allison, why are you printing the Visio graphics to PDF and
then importing them into a Frame file that is printed to PDF? Embedding a PDF
file into a file that is going to be printed to PDF tends to drastically
increase the size of the file being distilled.
Given that your testing has pretty much narrowed down the issue to pages with
embedded PDF images/graphics, I'd strongly suggest seeing if a different image
format would do what you need. Is it necessary that they be PDF, or could
another searchable format such as SVG (now that Adobe has fixed the SVG to PDF
but) be used instead?

RE: FM9 Crashes when Creating PDFs with files that Contain

2014-10-28 Thread Davis, David
A PDF file of a Visio diagram is more or less just a bunch of PostScript
instructions telling the computer to draw some lines and shapes.
That's a good efficient easily-portable non-lossy way to represent a vector
diagram.
Nothing odd about it!

My personal feeling is that documentation from Adobe has declined, and is
threatening to approach the Microsoft level.

2014-10-28 Thread Ed Nodland
I get it now. All this time they thought I was not using Framemaker. From
wiki: "An end user of a computer system
 or software is
someone who uses it."

I will let them know I am an end-user. That could explain why we get
answers that are high-level, vague, or sound like short sound bites. I was
checking IT manager.

I'll add that the program, documentation, and support is much better than
it was in 2007 - 2010 and the support community is amazing.

Given the amount of noise on this list about how the interface to FM is
inadequate, I would think there would be a raft of end-users out there
willing to sign on for this.

Craig
BTW: I am quite happy to be working in FM12. It's not perfect, but better
than any of the previous versions I've used (and I signed on with FrameMaker
3.0)

RE: what to back up before reinstalling

2014-10-28 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
Always a good idea to deactivate & reactivate. Yes, custom workspaces can be
restored via your backup.

Subject: what to back up before reinstalling

Sigh. I have to reinstall Framemaker 12 on my Win7 system. Before I
do so, I am creating a list of all of the files that I need to back
up so that I can restore all of my customization after I reinstall.
Here is my list so far (not including all of the add-ins and scripts
that are unique to my installation).

Back up the following from
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Framemaker\12
Folder WorkSpaces (specifically the .cfsw and .fws files)
Folder Linguistics
File consfile.txt
File maker.ini
File pdfsize.ini

Back up the following from C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker12
Folder Templates
Folder fminit
Folder plugins
maker.ini

Any others? I will post the final list somewhere that will serve as a
resource to the rest of us; I've had no luck searching for such a
list on Adobe or by Googling.

Two additional questions: Does anyone know if backing up the
WorkSpaces folder REALLY allows you to retrieve your custom
workspaces after reinstall? I vaguely remember having a problem with
this when I upgraded to FM12. And do I need to deactivate my current
installation before reinstalling it on the same computer?

Carol
