ANN: Last Call! TC Camp is tomorrow at Mission College in Santa Clara, CA!

2015-01-23 Thread Scott Prentice
*Camp is better when you bring a friend! Tell your network that you're
coming!*

TC Camp, the unconference for content creators, consumers, and the
people who support them, is happening at Mission College in Santa Clara
on Saturday, January 24, 2015.

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, this is happening right in
your own backyard, *why wouldn't you attend?*

And, *raffle prizes?* Yes! Read to the bottom to learn about all the
great stuff that you could win!

I don't know if you've been to an unconference before, but they are very
different from regular conferences. They are not juried. Sessions aren't
presenter-decided topics. It's much more fluid and much more audience
decided. All session topics are decided by the attendees on the day of
the event. Everyone nominates topics; we vote on them together; and
then, those sessions with enough votes get scheduled into the agenda.
You can guarantee there is always a session happening that you're
interested in.

Unconferences are all hallway - like the hallway conversations you
have between session at regular conferences. At an Unconference, you get
the chance to work with other people to really wrap your arms around a
topic and figure it out as it applies directly to you.

The main unconference (afternoon) is *FREE*, and we will kick things off
with a Campers' Feud game show (you'll have to come to learn what that
is!).

If you're interested, there are morning workshops that cost a modest $35
(20% off with the *GOTOCAMP* code). There are four morning workshops to
choose from that will help get the creative juices flowing:

*Creating a Documentation Portal* - Learn how Salesforce created portals
for delivering documentation to end users. Along the way, discuss design
practices, customer interactions, and learn how to use the open source
version of our portal to deliver your content on the web.

*Jump Start Your Mobile Project* - Get your mobile project off to a good
start by developing quick, low-fidelity mockups of mobile content. This
helps you demonstrate how you’ll meet mobile user requirements and lets
you incorporate feedback early in the project.

*API documentation in changing environments with expanding/new
technologies* - Learn the basics of REST API documentation, see sample
REST API doc sites, and learn how to create interactive documentation.
Additionally, learn how to document Java APIs using Javadoc and Doxygen.

*Adobe - Beyond Paper: Publishing enriched content to online formats via
Adobe Tech Comm Suite 5**.* Discover how FrameMaker empowers you to
maintain one set of source files and publish content with interactive 3D
diagrams to intelligent PDF. Find out how you can master Adobe
Captivate in just a few hours to create compelling video. Adobe's
workshop is FREE!

It's an amazing experience - energetic, dynamic, and all about the
attendees learning from each other.

I mentioned raffle prizes? Adobe is giving away a *TCS5 license*,
JustSystems has *2 iPad Airs*, and Single Sourcing Solutions has a
*Drone* for some lucky attendee! Other sponsors have provided *great
books and gift certificates*, plus the popular *S'Mores Maker*! All of
these will be raffled off to attendees who have opted to share their
info with the sponsors (remember, TC Camp is all about sharing!). If you
declined the sharing option when you registered, you'll have the option
to change your mind when you check in.

For more information about this year's event, the detail page is here:

http://www.tccamp.org/2014/10/tc-camp-saturday-24-january-2015/

Parking is FREE and the doors open at 8am!

*I hope that we'll see you there!*

Another note about file types: If you are using EPS files that DO NOT have embedded TIFF 'previews', then there's nothing for FrameMaker to show (IIRC; and if that hasn't been changed post-FM8).

...

Could this be related to the graphic format? I know that a vector graphic would require more resources than a bit-mapped graphic. If you are loading vector graphics, i.e., .eps, you might just be seeing a lag during the import.

2015-01-23 Thread Art Campbell
What type of graphics?
Have you checked your ownership / permissions of the graphics files?

___
Try saving the file to .mif to clean it up in case stray characters have
corrupted it. Then open the .MIF and see what happens.

I cannot import graphics - by either reference or by copying - either into
a table or not into a table - from either C:\ or from a network drive. The
anchor for the imported file appears, but the graphic does not. I
discovered this in a production file. The file is locked up so hard that I
have to use Task Manager to force out. I have replicated this numerous
times in both the production file and in new files freshly made from
 templates.

I _can_ import files as text insets without problem, but _once_, I deleted
the text inset, and the file locked up as it has with graphics.

Conversely, if I use Windows Explorer to copy the graphic file or the text
inset file and then paste it into the FrameMaker file, both the anchor and
the graphic or the icon for the .fm file appear.

A fellow employee running version 12.0.2.389 had no problem importing a
graphic from a network drive via VPN.

I've already reported this to the corporate service desk, but I've noticed
no mentions on this list of such problems.

 ¿Any thoughts?

Restart page number with 1 multiple times in a file

2015-01-23 Thread Margaret Bustion
Is it possible to restart with number 1 multiple times in a single file. Each
page number uses the chapter number as a prefix, but there are 500 chapters
contained within 20 FM files. We would rather not use individual chapters and
using a marker for the page numbers is annoying. Thanks for any input you can
provide.
MSWord and WordPerfect have had this feature for decades.

Speaking of pages....

2015-01-23 Thread Paul Kent
I've got an HTML page that I need to render onto a large PDF page.

I just installed Acrobat Pro 11 because I got an OS refresh yesterday. In
10, I recall that I had some trouble trying to print from Chrome or IE, but
if I used Firefox, I had good results.

I would use the Acrobat print settings to change the page orientation to
landscape, tabloid and then tweak the scaling until I got all of the content
onto a single page.

Tonight, no matter what scaling number I choose, I get a fit to page width
scaling. I've tried running the % down to 10 and I still get a two page
output just like when I specify 75 or 100%.

I know I'm missing something, but I'm not asking for fit to page, I'm asking
for scaling.

Any ideas?

TIA

Denis,
I suffer this too (and have many times over the years). The graphics in my case
are on a network drive,
But I suspect that the corporate anti-virus scanner that is installed on my

It can be a real productivity killer.
Unfortunately the IT departments seldom want to let you disable the anti-virus

Good morning,

I wonder if anyone else is experience a similar issue?

I am running Framemaker 12 on a Windows 7 laptop: Intel Core i3-3110m CPU @
2.4GHz with 8GB RAM.

Whenever I scroll using the vertical scroll-bar, I am constantly frustrated at
having to wait 4/5 seconds for the next page to load. We tried increasing RAM
from 4GB to 8GB but this has not made any improvement.

Can anyone suggest a way to improve the situation, please?

Thanks

I also experience this problem but mine is caused by a slight network lag

FrameMaker locks up

2015-01-23 Thread Stamm, David
2015-01-23-05T15:30Z

Windows 7 Enterprise operating system
Serviced pack 1
8.0 GB RAM
64-bit
FrameMaker 12.0.3.424 unstructured
Local administrator privileges
Shortcut to FrameMaker encoded to run as administrator

Yesterday, I posted about this problem under the subject, Cannot import
graphics.  Today, I experienced the lockup while using the Paragraph Designer
pod (which I guess is the term) when the pod is part of a tab group (which
I again guess is the term).

In my layout of FrameMaker, I customarily have the tab group of the Character
Catalog, Find/Change, Hypertext, Marker, and Paragraph Designer pods displayed
in a tab group.

Today, I had copied examples of two paragraph tags from a template and had
pasted the examples into my production file.  I had applied one of the
newly-added paragraph tags where I wanted it.  Then, in the tab group, on the
Paragraph Designer pod, I chose the Apply button.  It was then that I heard
the ding that indicates that FrameMaker is locked up hard and that I'll have
to use Task Manger to force it out of the system.

My installation of FrameMaker was updated to the current version only a week or
so ago.  Because I have seen no other postings about this problem, I wonder
whether there's a conflict between the latest update and my employer's security
software that causes the problem.  Although I've already reported this to the
corporate service desk, I've had no response to that report.

The contributors to this are my best source of help in such situations.  ¿Any
thoughts?

Re: FrameMaker locks up

2015-01-23 Thread David Spreadbury
Dave,If you think it could be your security software, or even your anti-virus
software, have you tried disabling either, or both, and running Frame?Usually a
reboot with quickly re-enable either settings.Since I am running the same
version of FM12, with various pods hanging and numerous graphics, and don't see
any of these problems, it sounds like either a system issue or something went
wrong during the FM12 install.I would try disabling the security software
and/or virus scanner first. If that doesn't work, then a re-install of FM12.
