Re: [Framers] Taking and inserting screen captures in FrameMaker 2015

2016-03-31 Thread John Sgammato
So maybe I am thinking about it wrong...
I work with Kurt.
If I capture an screenshot with SnagIt and call it image.png, I can link it
into a FrameMaker 2015 doc at 150 dpi and it is a good size for the page.
Later, Kurt is editing the same doc, and the screen has changed so he
recaptures it on his computer and saves it in the same folder with the same
name. FM uses the new image at the same DPI, but it's twice as big. So he
resets it to 250 dpi and now it fits again.
Still later those pesky developers have changed the screen again, and this
time I have the doc. I recapture the image on my own computer and give it
the same name. FM uses the new image at 250 dpi, so my new image comes in
half as big as it should be and I have to reset the dpi setting again.
I just want some way to ensure that all of our images can come in at a
standard size so we can use a standard dpi setting.

FrameMaker ignores any DPI setting in a bitmap file in favor of its
own, doesn't it?

When I first used Flare, that was one of the differences that confused
me. And I had trouble finding the DPI setting in SnagIt.

Re: [Framers] Taking and inserting screen captures in FrameMaker 2015

2016-03-31 Thread David Creamer
Regarding the missing resolution setting in SnagIt...

PPI (aka dpi) resolution in screen captures is more of an illusion. Monitors
and software programs strictly work by x-pixels by y-pixels.
So a captured 600x600 pixel dialog box is always 600x600 pixels regardless
of the resolution applied to it.
At 100 ppi, it will display 6 inches across; at 300 ppi, it is 2 inches
across--the amount of actual data doesn't change.
PPI resolution is applied for getting better quality during printing (and
sometimes zooming in on screen).

If one needs a larger image with a higher ppi, one usually needs to resize
in Photoshop or similar program.
However, just increasing the resolution can yield a soft file since the
default settings are usually set for photos, not screen captures.
Typically, I use Nearest Neighbor to maintain the "crispness" of the
original capture, and save as PNG or LZW-compressed TIFF (never JPEG).

As far as websites go, they also work by x/y pixels, not ppi resolution.

Re: [Framers] Taking and inserting screen captures in FrameMaker2015

2016-03-31 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi John,

I just checked and the registry fix from Parrain works, but only on a
newly defined profile (which then appears in "my profiles").
The standard profiles seem to be "immune", i.e. changes will be
discarded.

(Note that user profiles will get a cryptic key name in the registry,
consisting of 32 alphanumeric characters, and not the name you have
given the profile.)

I saw another key "DPI", which I also set from 96 (dec) to 300 (dec). As
a result of all this, my profile now produces images with 300 dpi
preset.

This does not increase the amount of pixels, of course, it will only
change (reduce) the resulting layout size in a DTP program.
Normally, I would use a Photoshop actions batch for this. No need to
change it in Snagit for me.

Best regards -- Tino H. Haida, Berlin

Parrain wrote: =
Using regedit in administrator mode, you can modify your profiles :
- point regedit to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TechSmith\SnagIt\11\Profiles\the desired
profile
- switch the key "ImageUseResDPI" to 0 (zero - that means "don't use the
default 96DPI resolution").
- switch the "ImageXResolution" and "ImageYResolution" keys to the
decimal value you need (in my case "300", so "12c" in hexadecimal).

Re: [Framers] Taking and inserting screen captures in FrameMaker2015

2016-03-31 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Hmmm, for my captures, this is not an issue - for me, fixing the resolution
later is trivial. Assuming I need to do so.

Screen capture (any tool) always takes the pixels you want (regardless of that
setting in later versions of SnagIt), so this "setting" is just an
interpretation of how the pixels should be converted to inches when displayed,
I suppose.

I guess the main issue in that thread appears to be the slowdown in the
work-flow, since the file needs to be touched in an image editor to change that
setting.

Actually, the setting *is* in SnagIt 10, but apparently not in SnagIt 11. (I

If you have FrameScript, the ArchiveFM.fso script does the trick. It collects
all files used in the doc and puts them in a ZIP file that maintains the folder
structure with only the archived contents.
You can get it free at https://framescript.com/framescript-6-script-library/
An added bonus: if you have an images folder with a bunch of unused or obsolete
images, you can easily purge them by running the archiveFM script, then
replacing the fat images folder with the archived one, confident that it
includes everything that you need and nothing else.

Hi Penelope,

In FM packager functionality currently works within a given root folder and
it's sub-folders.

But if you want to share project over Dropbox you can use Dropbox integration
provided by FM. Under Edit --> Preferences--> Global --> Dropbox check the
second option.

Or refer
this
link for more details on Dropbox integration.

Thanks

Caroline,

In FM12 (and probably FM2015 as well), the package function will pick up files
only in the same folder and its subfolders. Graphics in folders outside that
path are skipped and show up in the log file as "missing" -- a limitation, to
be sure.

Regards,

Penelope

Hi,

In the past I had the Archive Add-on.

In Frame 2015, if I want to collect graphics that may be in different folders,
how can this be done?

I tried to use, "package", but it did not collect graphics that were in
different folders.

Are there some specific options that must be set?
