Re: [Framers] Old FrameMaker books?

2017-10-05 Thread Robert Lauriston
I think there are already enough tools out there that there's not much
demand for something new.

You might look at LibreOffice Writer and LibreOffice Draw, or Scribus.

People who think software design peaked 20+ years ago often use Latex.

Re: [Framers] Linking to a LAN Shared Drive

2017-10-05 Thread Robert Lauriston
Theoretically, the marker looks something like:

message URL file:///

However, if the employees don't all use the same browser on the same
operating system, such links may not work for all of them.

It's a lot cleaner to have an internal web server and host docs on that.

[Framers] Linking to a LAN Shared Drive

2017-10-05 Thread john . x . posada
Hi guys...my company is transitioning everything from a SharePoint CMS to a
Network Shared LAN drive.

I'm looking for the "secret sauce" that will allow me to make clickable links
as follows:

https://xxx.xxx.xxx/xxx/xxx//file name.pdf

to

\\xxx.xxx.xxx\xx\\xxx\xxx\xxx\file name.pdf

Anyone do anything like this?

Re: [Framers] Old FrameMaker books?

2017-10-05 Thread Phillip Norman
I have a box of FrameMaker v5 from Frame technology. I loaded the program
in Windows 7 Professional, and of course learned nothing of program
workings, where I am peculiarly using the graphics palette. From the
beginning when v5.5.6 was new, I have been happy with merger of 2D graphics
of some complexity and great precision, with text documents such as
Purchase Orders. As this peculiar user, happy with v5.5.6, I am only
unhappy to be constrained to 32-bit computing.

I have talked to The List three times I think, in all those years of caring
about FrameMaker and skimming understandable things occasionally from
others. Where I talk to The List, it is always about this graphics suite,
and the fit to my brains in flexible document creation, despising automated
cookie-cutter Word and its predecessors that evolved from command language.
I know a few keystroke operations, but it is mostly type and place precise,
flexible simplicity.

I have tried to share samples of my work, hoping not all modern users are
publishing professionals. I show the often creation of house details in my
work as a construction contractor, on an accurately sized satellite photo.
I imagine large employment opportunities for people I call Diligence
Reporters, doing third-part quality control in construction, photos and
builder notes proving completion of check list requirements, then in many
ways surpassing "work" done by municipal jurisdictional authorities. I am
inspired by a customer-couple who worked as entertainers on cruise ships,
and would be happy in this Reporter relationship with respected builders,
working in The Cloud to escape boredom in the Indian Ocean. I want a
simplified and inexpensive software going back to the roots of FrameMaker,
perhaps written by those Old Guys, and not owned by Adobe. Millions have a
chance to do their correspondence in something not Word-like, much better.
The Reporters in-the-cloud, would find this flexible software more
intuitive than today's FrameMaker.

Can anyone help?

So, my v5 Frame Technology books are still shrink wrapped. Would I do well
to open and read them? Is the pristine box valuable?

Re: [Framers] [WTF ramemaker] Can RoboHelp generate a PDF of a complete help system?

2017-10-05 Thread Robert Lauriston
I don't know what you mean by "wasn't capable." As far back as RH7 the
default PDF output included the whole project.

If you have TCS, I think it makes more sense to have the source in
FrameMaker, generate PDF from there, and link to RoboHelp to generate
other outputs.

[Framers] Utility to handle FM dictionaries

2017-10-05 Thread Klaus Daube
   Dear all,

Since my first post on this (Sat, 29 Jul 2017) I got quite good input
from the German list and I decided to work further on this project:

   2017-08-011.2Not published

Save function reacts on changes of the source.

Order of words in the list is same as in FM-dictionaries (-xxx,
   Xxx, xxx).

   2017-08-051.3Not published

Allow to work on 'only new' words.

Search in word list as well as multiple selection.

   Dialogue and some elements enlarged.

   2017-09-151.4Not published

   Introduction of project dictionaries.

Automatic save allows to work with FM in parallel.

User interface for de, en and fr.

   2017-10-051.5 [1]see fmaker77.html

Information to the user at FM start about the source of the user
   dictionary.

Import word lists of many formats.

   Installation-program.

A special remark for Böðvar Björgvinsson: look into the pdf at page 8
(Import word lists). Of course this is not a complete support of new
languages (Latin, Islandic, …) but a crunch...

   Your feedback is welcome.

[Framers] FM unreliability Re: I may be upgrading at last...

2017-10-05 Thread Craig Ede
I think the 'unreliability' issues are overstated. Numerically, I think that we
are now on FM14 (FM2017), so 6 full versions (and a couple of operating
systems) have gone by. Things have been moved around a lot from FM9 on, but the
interface for books is definitely better in the most current releases. I've
bene working for a company for some time that uses multiple versions of Frame
(including 8 for many things) and working in those documents really makes me
feel like my hands are tied.

The decision to emphasize structure in these post FM8 releases means a lot of
the improvements are in those areas, but things like the ability to find
overrides easily (and correct them) are things that have been available since
FM9, and that is certainly useful in non-structured environments.

Excellent. Thanks much. I'm aware of the change to the UI. That would be a
major part of the reason I've clung to Frame 8 as long as I have. Well, that
and the wild unreliability of Frame for several versions after 8. I think I've
stuck to my guns as long as I can, though.

You should be able to open and save them to the new format with now problem.
Nothing should have changed.

You will notice substantial changes in the interface. I suggest you walk though
the interface related videos on the Adobe site to reduce confusion.

Subject: [Framers] I may be upgrading at last...

Hi all,

I've been running Frame 8 since the days when we rubbed two sticks together to
turn on the computer. I currently have it installed on Win10 64-bit, and it's
run flawlessly until today.

Today, it crashed spectacularly. Not only did it crash, but it destroyed the
entire file. There wasn't even anything to try to repair. It was just gone.
Fortunately, I was able to recover a shadow copy, but I'm pretty sure that this
is a shot across the bow.

My question to all of you is this: can I convert my Frame8 files to Frame 2017?
I have almost 130 manuals that would need upgrading, and if I can avoid a
copy-and-paste extravaganza, I surely would love to.

Help,
Lea
