A decent PDF Reader for under 2.5MB
Hi Framers, Having gained much from this list in such a short time, I would like to recommend Foxit, a decent PDF Reader for under 2.5MB http://downloads.foxitsoftware.com/foxitreader/FoxitReader21.zip While I have the greatest respect for PDF as a page description language (thank you Mr. Warnock!), I've also become increasingly frustrated with the number of plugins that have crept into the reader over the years. As a simple reader, Foxit is 90% smaller, although I would not recommend it for copying and pasting text. batch processing of large numbers of text files?
Hi Framers, Well, it looks like I will need to batch process a large number of ASCII (plain text) system configuration files in the same manner, in order to filter out information that I do not need, before I import them into Frame. I don't know if this a proper topic for the list, but it takes me back to my UNIX days of using sed with great success (even for a non-programmer like me), to create a standard set of batch text processing instructions that could be applied consistently and repetitively to large numbers of pattern-based plain text files. The question is two fold: a) any sed FM users out there? b) are there other similar (economical) options for batch processing of text files? Comments and opinions are most welcome. Thanks! Re: Pop-ups in Generated PDF
Lin, What about creating a pseudo popup by jumping to a new window that has a Back button on the master page? This was the workaround we devised for tutorial answer pages. Ben I have to publish a HUGE flowchart for a customer that has several levels of data within each square. In order to fit the entire chart on one page (and have the text larger than 6 pt), I want to only display one or two levels of data and then use hypertext commands (probably popup menus, even though the menu options won't lead the user anywhere; they'll just display the next level of data) to allow the user to click an item and show the rest of the data that falls below that item. I have the hypertext command working in FrameMaker (I can Ctrl-Alt-right-click the text flow and see the next level of data in a popup menu), but nothing's happening in the PDF. (Yes, I'm generating Acrobat data when I create the PS file.) So, what am I missing? And why do I have to right-click instead of left-click like usual to test the hyperlink? AND does anyone have a better way to go about this than hypertext commands? I'm all ears. I'm using FrameMaker 7.2 on Windows, unstructured for now but can go structured if necessary. -- Ben Hechter objectives.ca Technical Performance Support Solutions Vancouver BC e: [EMAIL PROTECTED] w: www.semitake.com ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

For Unstructured Framemaker users: FM8 migration plans
Think I'll wait and see before upgrading. Tabs are cool, but Unicode seems more of a localization benefit. While I appreciate XML/DITA enhancements for structured users, I would not be so generous as to pay for an "enhancement" like feature stability (personally, I have no stability complaints). IMHO, if a feature doesn't work, it should be fixed for free. Ben Hechter objectives.ca Technical Performance Support Solutions Vancouver BC e: bhechter at objectives.ca w: www.semitake.com
Re: deleting backup files
Thanks to everyone for suggestions on post-production deletion of unnecessary backup files. I overlooked the obvious Windows command line interface, so thanks for the reality check. My 2c on backups: - Flash USB is temporary storage only, don't depend on it for backup - Invest in a large capacity external drive and dump EVERYTHING to it on a regularly scheduled basis. I have not yet found any selective backup synchronization software that meets my needs, but, hey, maybe it's out there. deleting backup files
Hi Framers, Before attempting this, thought I would inquire if any VB wizard out there has a script snippet to share for deleting FM .backup files from archival directories. Thanks!
