Thanks: Review Process for documents in HTML?

2009-04-09 Thread Beierle, Cecily
Thanks to Art Campbell and Richard Combs for your thoughtful replies and
suggestions.

We do have WebWorks make most of the HTML changes, such as font, color,
borders. We never did you page numbers in our cross-references, so we haven't
had a problem with that.

The no output setting is a good idea. I'll bring that up to our writing
team, to see if it could be useful, and we'll take a look at using condition
text for print-specific information.

As I mentioned in a follow-up, one idea we have tried is to set up the HTML
project for the updated topics (or the entire manual) and provide both the
comment-enabled PDF and the link to the HTML, so that the content reviewers
can see the big picture as well as the details in the PDF (or the both the
forest and the trees). It's a learning experience for everyone.

Review Process for documents in HTML?

2009-04-08 Thread Beierle, Cecily
Our company uses FrameMaker to create documentation. Originally, we generated
PDFs of the FM files, which we used for SME reviews and published on our
intranet. Now we generate HTML from the FM files, using WebWorks. As part of
the transition to HTML, we've changed our styles to be more web-friendly.
Unfortunately, the files are much more difficult for SMEs to review in PDF
format. Our question is what have others done to allow SMEs to efficiently
review HTML documentation?

RE: Review Process for documents in HTML?

2009-04-08 Thread Beierle, Cecily
Some of the differences between the PDF and the HTML are:
Under the chapter, there's empty space, because the first heading starts on a
new page; in HTML, the mini-TOC will fill in that space.

Some graphics imported into the FrameMaker are not completely visible (too
large to fit reasonable on the printed page; in HTML those graphics are shown
in full. The reviewer can't see the whole picture in the PDF.

As for generating output from the HTML: it's possible but time consuming,
unless there are tips/tricks available. Our documents are often several
pages.

One approach we've tried is to create the HTML project and include a link to
the HTML in the PDF review packet, so they can see the forest and the trees.

If all the content is in Frame, I'm not understanding how output from
Frame source to a PDF would differ from output to HTML. Which means, I
think, why can't your SMEs continue to review in Acrobat since it has
much stronger review and comment tools?

Or if there is a difference in output, why not generate PDFs from the
HTML pages?

Answered: Question about WebWorks 2008.1 and FrameMaker 7.2 Transit

2008-07-30 Thread Beierle, Cecily
Thanks to John Pitt for clarifying the changes to WebWorks ePublisher and the
FrameMaker menu.

~Cecily

>>1. ePPro is no longer on the FM menu.

The workflow that WebWorks now champion is to build and maintain your

style templates using Pro; make a master stationery file using Pro;

build your projects using ePX (Express) linked to that stationery file.

You can have 1 or 100s of projects linked to one stationery file, and

when the stationery is changed, all projects have the option of updating

with the updated stationery next time they are compiled. Instant change

across an entire organisation's document set is possible with no pain.

I use this workflow to great effect, and amongst other things, it allows

you to whip up a quick and dirty test project with a single file or book

at any time.

See for

more details.

2. Transit is a plug-in that adds marker and conditional text

functionality to Microsoft Word. FrameMaker does not use it because they

are native functions.

Question about WebWorks 2008.1 and FrameMaker 7.2 Transit Menu

2008-07-24 Thread Beierle, Cecily
We have been using FrameMaker 7.2 with Windows XP, and WebWorks Pro (9.2) and
WebWorks Express (1.0, build 10234), and IE 6 or IE7.
I am testing the recent release of WebWorks Enterprise, 2008.1 (Pro and
Express).
The WebWorks menu in FrameMaker 7.2 used to list Generate Output (which
created a temporary project out of the current FrameMaker file), and
Launch... ePublisher Express and Launch ePublisher Pro.
With the recent release, however, WebWorks menu in FrameMaker lists only
ePublisher Express.
When I looked at the release notes, I saw was that the transit menu was
simplified in release 9.3 - that was the only mention that seemed related to
my problem.
The version of WebWorks Transit is 1.0.0 in both the old and the new
releases.

Can anyone please tell me if:
1. Should I see ePublisher Pro in my WebWorks menu in FrameMaker?
2. Is there a workaround to generate a temporary project from a current file?

Thank you in advance!

FrameMaker 7.2 crashing

2007-10-01 Thread Beierle, Cecily
I am working on a file where I am converting the existing paragraph formats
to new formats from a template, and replacing screen capture figures that are
in tables with imported graphics. I am converting the tables to paragraphs so
I can delete the replaced information carefully and keep the original figure
title and any markers established on that paragraph.

Suddenly, FrameMaker is crashing, without any warning. Usually, when FM
crashes, I get some message that it encountered a serious problem and must
close. And, after the application closes, a recover file is created. Not in
this case. The application makes a gong sound and it's gone.

I noticed that when I change the paragraph that holds the figure table is on
the top of the page to another paragraph format, that seems to be when the
crash happens, or it happens when I try to convert that figure table to
paragraphs.

I have rebooted, and that doesn't seem to help.

I have saved the file as .mif and back as .fm, but that didn't change
anything.

I am working with FrameMaker 7.2, p.158, in Windows XP, service pack 2.

Thanks in advance!
