Dan,

One thing that I feel you might be doing wrong is-
I've gone in and edited the $volnum variable in each of the individual
.fm files and made them A, B, and C.

Instead of editing the individual fm files in the book, you should try
modifying the numbering scheme for the child book (.book) components in the
master book itself. (For the book components in the master book, right-click
your child book and set volume numbering for each child book-A, B and C
sequentially or set the first one to A and set the others to 'Continue
numbering from previous file in book'). This should get you the desired master
index.
By design, numbering variables in hierarchical books are meant to be pushed
from top to bottom(master book to child books). So the variables from the
master book override and percolate down to the child books in the hierarchical
book workflows.

Nakshatra

Thanks. I had read that thread, but that doesn't tell me what I'm doing wrong
with my variables, why I'm not getting the prefix on a per-volume basis in the
master index.

I don't know if the method I'm attempting is wrong, the variable
placement/reference is incorrect, or something else.

Anyone?

I've set the page numbering for all files to Read from file.

I've gone in and edited the $volnum variable in each of the individual .fm

Apparently this isn't the way to go about it, as it's not working. I just get

Thanks in advance.

Any way to disable hover bubbles?

Is there any way to disable those annoying hover bubbles that appear any time

I'm not really referring to moving from somewhere else in the document to the

The issue I have with both of the above solutions is that they require an

Friends, the pont is: can I instantly spot the cursor location on a large
screen to assure that my paste operation hits the right target? visual feedback
is the basic requirement in a user interface (and not the design satisying only
black-clothed people).

Nowadays so much more mousing is required than in the good old FM < 9 days,
because many Windows features (e.g. title area of app window) are just ignored
by the new interface.
Focus is lost every now and then (e.g. after zooming), need to click into the
doc window... Some very basic things hamper the otherwise not so bad new
interface.

Let's stop the rant now - it does not solve a single issue.

FrameMaker 10 Interface/Accessibility questions

2011-07-08 Thread Harding, Daniel B
I suspect I'm out of luck on these, but it doesn't hurt to ask:

FrameMaker 10.0.1.1402
Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit

1. When I am reconciling index entries, I keep all the individual book
files open in separate undocked windows, which keeps them from opening in the
primary workspace as I edit a zillion index markers. With 10-20 windows open,
it becomes difficult to know which window is the currently active chapter
(sometimes I need to open that window a bit larger to check context of a
marker) because there is ZERO color difference between active and inactive
windows. I have not found any way to make the active file window stand out from
all the others. This appears to be a Framemaker issue rather than Windows, as
all Aero effects are disabled on windows generated within FrameMaker

2. I need the i-frame text position indicator (cursor) within the
document (not the hovering cursor that moves as you move your mouse) to be more
prominent on the screen. I frequently lose track of where I am, and have to
either hit up and down arrows to see where the text indicator is moving.
Ideally there would be a way to set the color, thickness, and blink frequency
for it, for no other reason than aiding accessibility.

Thanks in advance.
