RE: Round-tripping Chinese XML

2010-09-08 Thread Hayward, Morgan (Bolton)
Hi Wei Jiang,

We are investigating whether or not it is possible to exchange XML files
with our translators and take on the formatting in FrameMaker ourselves.
Our translators currently convert our FrameMaker files to MIF and run it
through their translation software. They then take the result and enter
it back into FrameMaker where they finalise the formatting.

We have not localized our OS for Simplified Chinese and are hoping for a
solution that will help us avoid this.

Morgan

Hello Morgan,

Have you properly set up the support for Simplified Chinese on your OS,
assuming it is not already localized in Simplified Chinese? I'm also
curious about the workflow that your translator has used to create the
Chinese FM files? (I use the MIF - S-Tagger - Font Mapper route, it work
wells.) Particularly, if they are already translated, why would you need
to import them into FrameMaker?

 Hello Framers,

My co-workers and I are trying to round-trip a FrameMaker
 document given
to us by our translator that was translated into Simplified
 Chinese.
The XML output appears to be correct, but when we import
 the document
back into FrameMaker, the characters appear as question
 marks.

The encoding is set to UTF-8.

How do we properly round-trip a FrameMaker document that
 contains
Chinese characters? Does it have anything to do with
 the encoding of
the characters when they are added to the document?
 Is it related to
the encoding set in the XML file? Is there a specific
 setting in the
application definitions we need to set?

Any advice you can share would be appreciated.

Image Scaling in FM9

2010-08-13 Thread Hayward, Morgan (Bolton)
Hello Framers,

Quick question about a difference my co-workers and I found between
FrameMaker 8.0 and FrameMaker 9.0.

We have a PNG image that is 4.5 wide and has a resolution of 300 dpi.
When we import this image into FrameMaker 8.0, it automatically detects
the resolution and sets the scaling to 100%. FrameMaker 9.0, however,
does not detect the resolution and automatically sets the scaling to 24%
when we tell it the resolution is 300 dpi.

We want the image to display at 100% of its original size. Why does
FrameMaker 9.0 say the size is 24%?

RE: FM8 crashes

2008-09-17 Thread Hayward, Morgan (Bolton)
Hi Charlie,

We had a similar problem directly related to Microsoft Office software.
The longer we worked with FM8 in a single session, the higher the
likelihood that opening an e-mail through Outlook, opening/creating a
Word document, or opening/creating an Excel document would cause FM8 to
crash. According to Adobe technical support, FM8 creates a series of
temporary files in your Temp folder and then deletes them once you close
your session. If you don't have a lot of RAM or have a slow processor,
doing anything with Microsoft Office like what I've described will cause
it to crash because there isn't enough space in the Temp folder.

You can either make sure your Temp folder is completely empty before
every time you start FrameMaker (won't stop the crashes completely),
only use FM8 when all Microsoft Office applications are closed, or
upgrade your PC.

I recently upgraded to a dual core 3.0 GHz processor with 2.0 GB of RAM
and haven't experienced a crash since. My co-workers however are still
suffering and see maybe 14 crashes a day.

Hope this helps.

Morgan

Has anyone else had problems running FM8 concurrently with MS Office or

RE: Question for the experts - a problem in Acrobat 3D that is not aproblem in Acrobat 8 Pro

2008-07-18 Thread Hayward, Morgan (Bolton)
Hi Diane,

If you're unable to find a solution in Acrobat 3D and your documents are
structured, you can create a special master page for your front cover
and then apply it automatically based on a context label applied by your
EDD. We use this to apply a DRAFT watermark to our documents before
they are saved as PDF, thus avoid any hassles with Acrobat.

All you need to do is the following:

1. In your EDD, create an attribute at the root of your title page with
values that represent the different stages. We use Draft and
Released, for instance.
2. Under the definition for your title/heading element, create a rule
that applies a special context label to the element when that new
attribute has a specific value.
3. Now go into your template, create a new master page (typically a copy
of the page used for the title page), and drop your watermark image or
text on the background layer.
4. Switch to the reference pages and tell FrameMaker to use the new
master page whenever the title element has that new context label. This
is done in the StructMasterPageMaps table.

Once you've done this, all you need to do is set the attribute value in
your document, apply the master pages (this can be scripted), and print
your document to PDF.

In the end, this solution will add an extra step to the FrameMaker side
of your process, but it will free you from the extra steps you're taking
(or trying to take) with Acrobat.

Morgan

Subject: Question for the experts - a problem in Acrobat 3D that is not

Hi there Framers, Acrobateers, and TCSers,

(Did I miss anybody?)

I recently upgraded from FM 8.04 and Acrobat 8 Pro to the TCS, which
includes an enhanced version of FM8, as well as Captivate and Acrobat 8
3D.
Some of the menus in AB8 3D are different than those in AB8 Pro and I've
run into a problem with one of the Acrobat features that worked in AB 8
Pro but does not work in AB 8 3D. (Not likely related, but for the
record, the OS is Win XP SP2.)

In the Document - Watermark dialog box in Acrobat 8 Pro, you can select
the
page or pages on which you want the watermark to appear. But in
Acrobat
3D, the dialog box is different. There is a field to set the pages, but
it is grayed out and I cannot find any way to enable it.

Does anyone know how I can enable this field? There is NOTHING in the
online help about it at all (surprise! :-) In fact, the field isn't even
mentioned in the help. I have not called support because I doubt that
they would be able to answer the question and there are more experts on
this list, including Dov and other Adobe employees, who are more likely
to know the answer. Assuming there is one, that is.

Yeah, I know it sounds like a dumb problem, but we have a need to put a
watermark only on the cover of the manuals during a certain part of our
doc development cycle, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

To save some emails, here are some options and workarounds that we've
thought of but they all have drawbacks.

o Switching back to AB 8 Pro - this is not an option o Installing both
AB8 PR0 and AB8 3D. Nope, only one version of AB can be installed on a
system at a time.
o Generate the PDF of the cover separately, put the watermark on it,
and then replace the cover page in the main PDF with the cover PDF.
Possible, but not productive with 32 manuals.
o Putting a conditionalized title in the FM file is another option, but
also not productive because we'e have to generate two PDFs for each
manual.
Time consuming and harder to manage.

Thanks lots.

run into a problem with one of the Acrobat features that worked in AB 8
Pro but does not work in AB 8 3D. (Not likely related, but for the
record, the OS is Win XP SP2.)

In the Document -> Watermark dialog box in Acrobat 8 Pro, you can select
the
page or pages on which you want the watermark to appear. But in

MS Office crashes FM8?

2008-05-21 Thread Hayward, Morgan (Bolton)
I'm working with FrameMaker 8.0p273 (unable to download the latest patch
until Adobe puts it on their website) on Windows XP SP2 and noticing
that FM8 frequently crashes when I'm working with a Microsoft Office
application at the same time. It crashes when Outlook looks for new
e-mail, when I open an Excel file, or when I'm in the middle of working
with a Word document. It's not an instant thing though. I can
sometimes be working with FrameMaker and a MSO app for a good 1/2 hour
before FM8 finally crashes, but it inevitably happens.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem or have any suggestions?

Morgan

Hi Framers,

I've a question about saving a FM document as an XML file.

The FM document contains several tables with different formats (Format A,
Format B, etc.). However, the table format names are not exported to the XML
file. The elements for the tables are all identical (TABLE.../TABLE).

Is there a way to include the table format name in the XML? Something
like:

TABLE ID=Format A.../TABLE
...
TABLE ID=Format B.../TABLE
...

Rules disappearing from EDD

2008-02-13 Thread Hayward, Morgan (Bolton)
Hi everyone,

I have the most fantastic and bizarre bug for you all. We're working
with structured FrameMaker 7.1 on WinXP systems and finding that select
ParagraphFormatting rules are being replaced with the
NoAdditionalFormatting element when we import our EDD into a document.
This is happening when we define a combined font for Asian translations.
However, it doesn't stop there.

When we archive the document using the Archive plug-in OR copy the file
on the network to another folder (independent of FrameMaker), the
ParagraphFormatting rules for Cyrillic, Baltic and Central European
translations are replaced by the NoAdditionalFormatting element too.

What it should be
Else, if context is: * Chapter [Language = ChineseSimplified]
Default font properties
Combined font: ChineseSim_MyriadProCond_FZDHTK

Else, if context is: * Chapter [Language = Russian]
Default font properties
Family: Myriad Pro Cond Cyr

What we end up with
Else, if context is: * Chapter [Language = ChineseSimplified]
No additional formatting.

Else, if context is: * Chapter [Language = Russian]
No additional formatting.

This has been repeated on all computers in the department and we've even
replicated it using FrameMaker 8, which we have moved over to yet.

Does anyone know what might be causing this problem? I would be happy
with a wild guess at this point.

Thanks,
Morgan

Hi Framers,

One of our translators wants to manually convert autonumber characters
in an alphanumeric list (a, b, c, etc.) from English to Greek for every

characters to Greek through the EDD?

We're currently using FrameMaker 7.1 on Windows XP.
