2-pane Page in WebWorks Standard?

2006-05-08 Thread Joanne Curme
The documentation (such as it is :)) for WebWorks Standard, which comes with
FrameMaker 7.0, says it can create a 2-frame page for a multi-doc set where
the titles of the docs remain listed in the left pane while the contents
display in the right pane.

I have not been able to get this to work in this version of WebWorks. Has
anyone else?

RE: Alignment of list numbers

2006-04-24 Thread Joanne Curme
Is it better that the numbers are right-aligned? This seems more of an
accounting requirement than a design one. With left alignment, the numerals
for either the single-digit steps or the double-digit steps do not line up
with the left margin grid. If, as in my template, the n step format aligns
with the body left paragraph margins, this means either the first step or
the last step (if it's double-digit) do not left-align with the introductory
or summarizing text.

I've tried this both ways in my docs. The only benefit to right-alignment is
that the gap between the step number and the step text stays consistent when
the steps go to two digits. With left-alignment, this means the single-digit
steps have a slightly wider gap than the double-digit steps.

Steps in the printed FM docs left-align with the body text. It appears they
use an em-space after the number, because there is a consistent amount of
white space after the number -- the first line of step 10 is more indented
than lines 1-9, but by the same amount. (FM 7.0 UG, p 509) This seems to be
the format for A steps also (p 8). Subsequent lines in steps wrap back to
the left margin so there is not an issue with aligning to a hanging indent.

Whenever there are procedures with more than 9 steps (which can't be avoided
sometimes :) ), the longer numerals simply have to move to either the left
or the right. IMHO, it's more pleasing to the eye to maintain the left
margin grid.

On seeing some FrameMaker output, an experienced proofreader has commented
on the fact that for numbered lists that run into two digits, the numbers
are left-aligned, rather than right-aligned - the implication is that, for
example, '9' should be aligned above the '0' of '10'.

I must admit that this thought had not crossed my mind before, but of course
it's true. I've just checked a book set in Quark, and list numbers do indeed
right-align. As FrameMaker can only apply justification at the paragraph tag
level, and not at the character tag level, I cannot see a simple method of
achieving the desired alignment.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: converting text to HTML--which tool is best?

2006-04-03 Thread Joanne Curme
We're facing the same decision (how to best convert FM to HTML) and would
also like to hear suggestions and comments. I've used the purchased WebWorks
before with good results, but at my new company have to justify the purchase
of it, or use the WebWorks that comes with Frame 7, or use something else.
There needs to be a good main start page for a multiple book set, which the
free WebWorks says it provides but I haven't been able to get working.

I used to create HTML pages from Frame very frequently (at least from 6
years ago) simply by saving to HTML as well (after importing a FM template
appropriate for the online files).

I'm not sure if that's what you mean by 'control/access the code.

Do you need to change the output filenames to concure with the developers?
Because our developers wrote a simple program to convert the filenames
(after they found it in the generated HTML text)

If you want to change info in the HTML code, i.e. change heading sizes and
page breaks, control the Cross Ref formats, etc, that is done on the FM ref
pages in the HTML mappings page.

One thing you can't do, is create a searchable INDEX and TOC to collate all
your HTML pages.
For that you would have to use either WebWorks or MIF2GO.

Curently, our team must decide to use either of the tools.
I've been evaluating WebWorks ePublisher Pro and am very pleased by its ease
of use. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have a complete set of Manuals
yet, and are continually fixing bugs.

I would like to hear from you'all about the advantages of either MIF2GO or
Webworks over the other (please disregard pricing for now) if anyone has
experience with both.

Thanks a bunch,

RE: Cassette to MP3

2006-03-20 Thread Joanne Curme
There are many methods and products, but this setup works well for me for
converting records to wav and MP3. You need:

- Cassette (record) player with standard L/R speaker output jacks. Can be a
component (no speakers) or portable (with speakers).
- Griffin iMic USB Microphone Audio Adapter, $35ish online (works for Mac
and PC). Good printed doc.
- Y Audio Cable: one end is 2 standard L/R audio jacks, the other end is a
single audio jack. Must be long enough to reach from the cassette player to
the computer. Radio Shack, Fry's, etc.
- Goldwave audio software (free trial, $50 http://www.goldwave.com/ ), PC
only. Buy it, it's worth it.

Plug the L and R jacks of the Y audio cable into the L and R speaker jacks
on the cassette player. Plug the single jack on the other end of the Y cable
into the iMic. Plug the USB connector of the iMic into a USB port on your
computer. Make sure the switch on the iMic is set to 'speaker'.

Read Goldwave's built-in help about getting set up and started -- the
interface is daunting at first but easy to understand with a bit of reading.
Start a cassette so there is sound coming in. You should hear it through
your computer speaker (don't worry about poor sound quality from the
computer speakers). In Goldwave, you should see the L and R channel readouts
indicating that Goldwave is getting audio input. If not, adjust the input
settings until it does.

Adjust the Goldwave recording options to the ones your project requires. You
can set these as the default, but I prefer to save and post-process files at
a higher quality, then do a batch conversion to the lower quality.

To record, create a new Goldwave file and make sure the recording options
are correct and the empty file is long enough (30 min, 60 min, etc.). Click
Start, then start playing the cassette. You'll see the L and R channels
indicating input and hear the sound. It records in real time. Stop recording
by clicking Stop, then Save the file. Do some short test recordings and
playbacks before recording an entire tape.

Goldwave can automatically split files or stop recording when the sound
falls below a certain level. I suggest you not use these options for your
cassettes, but record each one in completion and do all splitting, deleting,
concatenating, etc. in post-processing. You can cut out the beginning and
ending silences, combine several files into one, take out pops, hisses,
crackles, etc., and probably do a bunch of other fancy editing I've never
needed to get into.

Goldwave does not burn CDs. For that, I just use the built-in drag-and-drop
app included with XP, but there are numerous other apps for this too.

RE: Help with PDF problem and 11x17 page size

2006-03-18 Thread Joanne Curme
D'oh! The solution I gave before only works in the Bookmarks pane. To make
the actual text entry on the LOF page work, display the LOF page and select
the Link tool (yellow chain icon in the toolbar or ToolsAdvanced
EditingLink Tool). The cursor will turn into a crosshair and all of the
existing links on the page will be outlined. Draw a rectangle around the
text line that is the xref to the graphic. In the Create Link dialog, select
Open a page in this document and enter the destination page number and the
appropriate zoom level, then click OK. Click back on the hand tool to exit
the Link tool.

Now, when you click anywhere on the entry, it will jump to the correct page.
You can even make the link open a separate file.

This is for Acrobat Standard 6.0. The location of the Link tool may be
different in other version.

You can manually link the bookmark to the page with the graphic.

In Acrobat Standard 6.0, display both the Bookmarks list and the pages.
Click on the LOF bookmark that isn't working, then scroll through the pages
until the appropriate page is showing (leaving the bookmark selected). Then
from the Options menu, select Set Bookmark Destination. This will link the
selected bookmark to the displayed page.

You can also create, delete, rename, and change the level of bookmarks in
the list.

Subject: Help with PDF problem and 11x17 page size

I'm new so please be kind. I work in Frame 7.1b023 with no plug-ins.

I have a book file that incorporates multiple 8-1/2 x 11 page size files,
multiple 11 x 17 page size files with cross references within files and from
file to file, stand alone TOCs, LOFs, and LOTs that are generated and then
copied and pasted into the front of the files. The book is then PDF'd with
create hyperlinks turned on.

The PDF works great and all the cross references for the TOC, LOF, LOT, from
Frame work in the PDF.

The problem is that the 11 x 17 pages (which are figures) end up on 8-1/2 x
11 pages in the book PDF. What I have been doing is going into each of the
11 x 17 files (9 total), and saving each as a stand-alone 11 x 17 PDF. Then
I exchange each new 11 x 17 PDF for the old 8-1/2 x 11 page in the book PDF
file. This works for getting the correct page size, but the link from the
LOF (which is not on the 11 x 17 page) does not work.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to make the links work to the 11 x 17
pages?

Thanks

Help with PDF problem and 11x17 page size

2006-03-18 Thread Joanne Curme
D'oh! The solution I gave before only works in the Bookmarks pane. To make
the actual text entry on the LOF page work, display the LOF page and select
the Link tool (yellow chain icon in the toolbar or Tools>Advanced
Editing>Link Tool). The cursor will turn into a crosshair and all of the
existing links on the page will be outlined. Draw a rectangle around the
text line that is the xref to the graphic. In the Create Link dialog, select
"Open a page in this document" and enter the destination page number and the
appropriate zoom level, then click OK. Click back on the hand tool to exit
the Link tool.

Now, when you click anywhere on the entry, it will jump to the correct page.
You can even make the link open a separate file.
