Unavailable fonts: more or less resolved!

2010-07-06 Thread Kristen Abbott
Thanks to both Richard Combs and Art Campbell for their suggestions. I
did also spend a bit of time trolling through the archives the hard way,
before they sent me some easier search tips (thanks, guys!), and had
already found the 'turn off "remember missing fonts"' tidbit.

That helps, and I did also look on the Master Pages and Ref Pages and
didn't find anything obvious. But I bet you're right, it could be
lurking there.

As for mucking in the .ini file, I just might try that! I'm peeved
enough (and determined enough) to root around in there.

Thanks for the help! This is a great list.

Unavailable fonts

2010-07-06 Thread Kristen Abbott
Hi Framers,

I'm sure someone has posted a response to this question, but
unfortunately the archive isn't searchable. (Hint...)

Anyway, I'd like to know of a way to remove and replace all the
unavailable fonts in a FM file *before* I open it and see the "There are
unavailable fonts" message. My only options at that point are to click
OK, in which case it does the replacements, or Cancel, in which case it
doesn't open the file. Even if I let it do the replacements, the FM
Console window shows that it replaced FontX with FontY. How can I get
rid of FontX ahead of time?

Even though I have changed all the Para tags to use only available
fonts, the message appears every time I open the file, regardless.
Annoying.

Any help is welcome.

Thanks-

Kristen

Even/Odd Page Layout Issue

OK, fair enough. Implementation detail. But I have seen Frame not reduce
the page count, even after saving the file with the tags turned off.

Even/Odd Page Layout Issue

2010-01-20 Thread Kristen Abbott
Hi Alison,

Is it possible the consultant used conditional text that is hidden? I've
seen FM leave "empty" pages in a file when you turn off conditional tag
display, because the text is still there but the pagination is not
updated when it's not visible.

I'd turn on all conditional tags in your files and check that.

HTH!

Batch file for deleting paragraph and character styles

2009-04-15 Thread Kristen Abbott
Couple things I forgot to mention:

If you want to clean one file then import those formats, you still need
to delete all the tags from your other files first. Otherwise I think it
will just add to the list, not scrub it.

Then either do the import or use the 'Create and apply formats' menu
item in those files.

And you might see a whole bunch of "Mapping Table " tags. Those are
used on the Reference Pages, and you can safely delete them all.

Batch file for deleting paragraph and character styles

2009-04-15 Thread Kristen Abbott
Hi,

It's not a batch file, but what I do is open the Paragraph Catalog
and/or Character Catalog and delete everything. Yup! Nuke it all.

Then I do this:

File > Utilities > Create and apply formats

It goes through and re-creates only the styles used in that FM file. If
you have any tags with overrides, they show up in the list with the name
of the tag they are based on, and an incremental number, such as Body,
Body1, Body2, etc. You can then re-apply the base tag, or keep the
override (or create a new tag for it).

To clean up the other book files, you can then either do the same thing
in all the other files in the book, or keep this file open, open the
other files, and do File > Import > Formats, selecting the cleaned-up
file to import from.

I use FM8. YMMV.

Re: Technical Writing Certificate

2009-04-09 Thread Kristen Abbott
Seawin22,

I don't know where you live, but I got a TW certificate from Middlesex
Community College in Bedford, MA, in 1999. It's an excellent, very
highly-rated program. I landed a job at (then) Compaq right away, stayed
there for 5 years (through the HP merger/acquisition), moved on to a
couple of contracting gigs, then another full-time, direct position at
my current company. It has served me extremely well. Absolutely the best
career move I ever made.

OT :: Frame & Voice to Text software

2009-02-24 Thread Kristen Abbott
Hi Baruch,

One thing to consider. Unless you work from home or have a walled-off
office with a door you can close, using any kind of voice-to-text
program is very likely to drive your coworkers nuts. I worked with
someone who used it in a large open cubicle setting, and it drove me
crazy hearing him intone his documents, with clearly distinct pauses
between words, all day long.

RE: sort order in an index

2009-02-07 Thread Kristen Abbott
Worked like a charm! Thanks, Richard. I converted all my Index markers
to Comment markers, abandoned my IOM, and instead created an LOM, as you
suggested. Looks great. It seems that I can also create an alphabetical
version of this same list, so I can see it sorted either way (by page
and by bug number). Excellent. Thanks again.

RE: sort order in an index

2009-02-05 Thread Kristen Abbott
Hi all,

I have a document with bug numbers entered as index entries. (I could
use a custom marker type, but the same question applies...)

Can I change the sort order of an index to list the page number of the
index (or custom marker) entry FIRST, instead of the actual entry text?

I have tried various things on the Reference page for the IOM file to no
avail. Namely, I've tried inserting the <$pagenum> system variable in
different places in the *ActiveIOM field, the *SortOrderIOM field, and
the Level1IOM field. Nothing has made the tiniest difference.

TIA,
Kristen Abbott
